OMG. 🤯 This video should be the FIRST one newbies like me watch to learn how to do image transfer with a gel plate. I have been watching dozens of gel printing videos from dozens of artists before planning my very first printing session, and they make it so much more complicated than your technique. Plus, they all state that you have to use laser printed images or require special supplies to transfer inkjet images. Why did I watch so many videos? I think I was intimidated. Your method is so simple and accessible. Tonight I'm picking out a bunch of vacation photos and trying this, and I can't wait to see how they turn out! Thank you!!

Thank you for this. I keep hearing that photo transfers only work with a laser printer (which I don't have) so this looks great. I also like that it doesn't reverse the print. I am looking forward to trying it. Can you explain why it doesn't work with colour? You have repeatedly stated that you must use only black ink but I am not clear why there should be a difference. I will have to look at my printer settings but as far as I know there isn't a "black ink only" setting. Would it make a difference if you used gel medium to do the print rather than paint? Also, what would happen if you brayered a thin layer of gel medium onto the plate before pressing down the photo? Would this enable you to print in colour? I am pretty new to gel printing and have a lot of questions! So far I have pulled some great background prints and experimented a bit with stencils. This process is highly addictive and soooo much fun!!!

OK, so I've tried this using glossy paper, waxed paper, transparency and freezer paper - I got nothing at all from any of them. Please can you tell me if there's something I'm missing here? Do I need to set the printer to print more densely? Does it only work with cheaper gloss paper? I got a tiny trace of ink on the plate from the waxed paper prints, but it didn't come out at all on my print, and I burnished it a lot. I'd love to be able to do this!!

The only thing I can say is make SURE the ink jet print is made with black ink only... Not a black and white print (printers will mix colored inks in to make the black and white images) I have good luck with just copy paper- not as dark as that brochure paper that I used in the video, but a good print. I was so excited when I saw this because I have been wanting to transfer photos with my Gelli and have been unsuccessful -- and I still am. No idea what I am doing wrong. I printed a black and white image using my Canon inkjet printer onto copy paper (in one of the posts it said that any paper would work??). My settings were grey scale and best image. I used it immediately after I printed it and I got a very, very faint image on my Gelli plate. It was so light that it couldn't be used. Any suggestions? One thing that I didn't see anywhere is if this only works with B&W. Thanks so much!
@LaurenEverettFinn5 жыл бұрын
Hi Barbara- I'm sorry that it didn't work for you- did you pull a print with the faint image? (put a layer of paint on top of the faint image) There might be more there than you think there is... Yes, in my experience and with my printer (HP envy 4500) only black and white works. Make sure you're only using black ink. There should be a setting somewhere in your printer settings that only uses black. Grey scale settings sometimes mixes some of the colors to make grey and they won't transfer. It worked best with a staples brand brochure paper-it has a bit of a satin surface. You can't use shiny photo paper with the plate. Good luck!

Hi Lauren, I was excited to find your video as I have an inkjet printer that I would like to use to make gelli plate prints. Do you recommend spraying the finished print with a fixative to protect the ink from the inkjet transfer? Maybe not? The acrylic paint you use does not seem to smear the inkjet ink. Thanks, Eric
@LaurenEverettFinn2 жыл бұрын
It did not seem to move after printing- but you bring up a great point. To be completely sure a spray of some sort of fixative might be a good idea if you’re going to paint on top, and don’t want it to smear at all. I’d experiment and see if it moves. I just tried to scrub the ink with matte medium and it didn’t budge, so I think it’s probably set with the acrylic paint. (?) That’s my best guess.

mamaroo2 I know that the inkjet print needs to be printed using black ink only. Even if the image has been turned to b/w- make sure your printer isn’t using any colored ink. Sometimes the printer will mix all the colors to make black- and then I found it wouldn’t transfer at all no matter what paper I used. I know I had to print from the computer to make sure- printing from my phone wouldn’t let me choose black ink only. (It let me choose black and white- but the printer would mix the colored inks to make b/w- no transfer) The paper I used was old and out of the packaging so I’m not sure exactly what kind it is- sorry.

Hi Camilla- I have an HP envy printer- the only thing I can think of is try printing from your computer rather than your phone. ? For some reason- the black ink only worked from the computer. I think you have more options for BLACK INK ONLY... Not black and white. (the black and white prints use colored inks mixed in with the black and won't work.) I'm sorry you've had no luck- yet!

Another question for you: have you tried this technique with an image with mid-tones (as opposed to solid black and solid white)? If so, how does it handle to grey areas?
@LaurenEverettFinn4 жыл бұрын
I was playing around with it last night- I used regular copy paper and the print came out fine. The technique handles the greys just fine. I usually push the contrast on the image so the darks have more ink on the copy, but the few I did yesterday have some nice mid tones as well. I'm getting ready for a print show, and will probably include a couple of the image transfer prints..

@@LaurenEverettFinn Many thanks for all your help! I'm completely new to the world of gelli printing, but your video (and comments) have prompted me to invest in a gelli plate! All other videos I've seen on the subject involve making prints from a magazine onto a plate of black acrylic paint, which is fairly limited in terms of tonal range. Have you ever tried this method (and, if so, how would you say the results compare)? Good luck with the show!
@LaurenEverettFinn4 жыл бұрын
@@TPToE That's great! I'm not sure what sort of artwork you do, but you'll find the plate to be a lot of fun- addictive actually. GelliArts have a lot of videos on their website too. I use my prints mostly for collage work. I've done the magazine transfer- I don't think you get the detail that you do with the inkjet transfer. Magazines are a rougher print. It seems that any dark value in the magazine photo is what transfers- It acts as a resist. The ink jet transfers are actually transferring the ink onto the plate. It won't release without the paint (a light value paint or very transparent) The paint pulls the ink off of the plate. Caution- with a new plate- the ink might stain the plate. My plates are very well used and stained- it doesn't bother me as long as it doesn't mark my prints. A good scrub with babywipes or soap and water should clean it. You could keep one side of the plate for ink jets and the other for just basic printing. Also- remember to only inkjet print in black ink. Colored ink doesn't work. Good luck!
@LaurenEverettFinn4 жыл бұрын
@@TPToE One more thing- if you're using just plain copy paper for your inkjets, it doesn't look like much on the plate- when you add the acrylic and pull the print- it's amazing how much detail you can see. So don't be disappointed with the light grey tones on the plate when you pull the ink jet paper off

@@LaurenEverettFinn Thanks for all the useful information! I'm a photographer, so it's with this application in mind that I'm approaching the prints. If I've not already taken up too much of your time, I have a few more questions: have you ever tried making a resist print from an inkjet print (as with the magazine transfers)? Re: the inkjet inks staining the plate, would this cause problems with subsequent prints, or is it just a blemish on the plate? Lastly, what size plate would you recommend starting with? Would there still be a sufficient amount of detail in a 5x7" plate?

@@LaurenEverettFinn relatively new-ish and I am inexperienced at printing. everything Ive done has stuck pretty well but this was like it was superglued! thought maybe there might be a suggestion as to how not to have that happen,like maybe a different paper? @@jackiebarr1802 yes- don't use glossy paper until the plate is well worn... I understand that it sticks like you describe. The paper I used was semi shiny- brochure paper.... but my plate is old and well used. That's the only reason I can think of that I didn't have the sticking problem. The transfer will work with just regular printer paper too.

@LaurenEverettFinn4 жыл бұрын
Max Renn yes- any acrylic would work- a lighter value color would show the print best. I didn’t try pulling without the paint layer- my guess is that you need the acrylic paint to pull the ink off the plate.

@chuckhaarmann-73119 ай бұрын
Oh my black ink is seperated into my printer . Every ink can have no whit or other colors in it. I googled it. I know now that laser printer have powder in there ink can. The laser burn the powder on the paper this is the gine different why transfair only with laserprinter work. The other system soaks up the ink. Laser printer seal the paper with there system. I want to try your way to transfair when I bought some photo or glossy paper.
@LaurenEverettFinn9 ай бұрын
If you have a new plate, be careful with using glossy paper. With new plates the glossy paper can stick to the plate and be really hard to remove. I’d test a tiny corner before you lay the whole glossy sheet on your plate. Yes- a laser print works differently than this method- this method transfers the print ink onto the plate- then you layer paint on the plate then pull the print.
