I mean, yeah, it's part of the episode framing. They have a theme every episode then the producers make all the contestants define it in the talking heads & pick one to put in the episode. They've cast some tattooers that really understand the reality TV nature of the show, that's why people like Ryan, DJ, Anthony, Christian, etc have made repeat appearances. They're good tattooers but more importantly, they're good at picking up on production cues. They can explain things clearly but not overly technically and they know how to bring the right level of drama so producers have sound bites to pick from when they're trying to create a narrative for each episode. Plus, Christian knew the greatest way to ensure reality TV longevity - find yourself an equally interesting rival to constantly butt heads with.

Not only did he not follow the challenge, but it did not have nearly enough contrast and the dark halo around it makes it look like a hematoma. I'm not an expert on tattoos, but it seemed ridiculous to me that he argued about the clarity and longevity when his was so lacking in clarity before even healing, it seems like it would just turn into a green blob circled in greyed out purple with age

That’s what hard to understand/respect about any show with subjective judgment. Sometimes it will favor a competitor you like, sometimes it will favor a competitor you dislike. Rules and guidelines should be enforced. Clean was the best tattoo artist this season, but they always say one bad tattoo will send you home. Mixing up the flag of Puerto Rico and the USA when you could look at online references is pretty unforgivable. Especially on a U.S.A pride piece. I remember this episode as one of the reasons I stopped watching the show on cable.

100% I remember one season were Tatto Baby made a Leopard Tattoo and could't finish it because of the human canvas and she STILL got best Tattoo of the day because its Was still Stunning. Then another season a girl made a Rose, which was also beautyful btw but she also could't finish it because of the canvas and she got voted off because it wasn't finished but was told "if that would have being done you could have won best Tattoo of the day" like what??? That first set of tattoos of the bikes or cars were some of the best I've seen in this show. The only obvious problems (as a total rookie) are the wheels on the caddie ? Were really small/distorted. And Ashley's motorcycle just did not look right.

Well, these judges know nothing about sailing… They criticized her for doing the tattoo wrong by assuming the ship is sailing directly with the wind direction, which is a terrible way to sail. The boat is moving forward, the wind is at an angle to the sail. It’s absolutely possible and more correct in the representation she had with the flag. This is literally the difference in True vs Apparent Wind. Seriously, just go watch a sail boat. Judges are idiots. 2:14:38

To be fair, the canvas wanted something very, very specific. She wanted HER bike tattooed on her arm, yet she didn’t have a reference picture. She also didn’t seem to know what kind of bike it was, seeing as how it was shown that they had trouble finding a reference she was happy with. The two face elimination was criminal, 1) it was the best out of any of them 2) if the person with the tattoo looks in the mirror it’s facing the correct way 3) 0.0001% of people will see it and realize it’s on the wrong side

I see where youre coming from but it was definitely a mistake. Tattoos are supposed to look right in person not through a mirror. Im betting the canvas would’ve preferred it to be accurate and align with the comic book representation.

I think it actually was the tattoo artist's job to become an expert of motorcycle structure overnight. That's part of the challenge.

My skin doesn’t hold ink well my dermatologist atolagist told me it’s because I am so pale and I have had so my sunburns my skin is just damaged from the sun and it’s peeled so much in many places I can’t get tattoos
