Cool Forgotten Weapons merchandise! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
The Inkunzi PAW (Personal Assault Weapon) is a 20mm shoulder fired semiautomatic grenade launcher designed by Tony Neophytou (and previously known as the Neopup). It is a creative and very interesting weapon system, both from a mechanical perspective and also from a question of practical application.
The PAW has a 6-round detachable rotary magazine, and an effective range of 1000m for area targets and 600m for point targets. Its purpose is to give the individual soldier an explosive area-effect weapon that fires like a rifle. To this end, the ammunition has been developed to give a muzzle velocity of 1000fps (310m/s), giving it a far flatter trajectory and shorter flight time than a 40mm grenade, either low pressure or high. It allows rapid repeat shots, rapid reloading, and easy target transition. The high muzzle velocity (for a grenade launcher) makes range estimation and engagement of moving targets much simpler than with the rainbow-like trajectory of 40mm systems. For specialized modern applications like guarding against one or more vehicle suicide bombs, fast-moving pirate skiffs, it seems extremely compelling. That utility extends to typical targets as well, like light armored vehicles, buildings, gun emplacements, and even something as simply as a patch of brush with an enemy hiding within somewhere. Typical small arms fire requires a substantial expenditure of ammunition for targets like those, while an explosive 20mm projectile can neutralize them in one or two rounds, without the need for a direct hit. The lethal radius of a 20mm HEI shell is between 6 and 18 feet (2m - 6m) depending on who you ask. That's a significant margin of error.
Mechanically, the PAW is a simple system to disassemble, and it uses a quite clever inertial locking system which is clean and reliable. The unique layout with the grip on the right side is done to accommodate the hydraulic recoil system, which allows the action to slide back into the stock assembly on each shot. This absorbs much of the recoil and spreads its effect out on the shooter, making it not unpleasant to shoot. An easy stowage feature allows the gun to be locked in its compressed configuration, shortening it for transit and also offering a way for the gun to be carried with a round chambered and ready to use, but with the trigger safely disconnected to prevent accidental firing for troops in armored vehicles or helicopters.
Compared to the American XM-25, the PAW strips away the overcomplications of laser designation and complex projectile fusing, which are arguably not really necessary anyway. It offers a simple and effective system, with tremendous firepower as well as suppression capability (nothing says go away quite like rapid fire explosives). It does this with a larger magazine and more compact and lighter weight design, no less.
It is rare to find a truly unique and innovative firearm these days, but that is exactly what Tony Neophytou has done here. The design is elegant in its simplicity, and well refined. It truly offers a unique set of capabilities - while it has been purchased in limited numbers by several smaller militaries, I hope to see it given serious consideration by some first-tier forces, as I think it has tremendous potential.

Dwayne Weaver Blanks can kill you, you fool Blank cartridges frequently contain a paper, wood or plastic plug called a wad which seals the powder in the case. This wad can cause severe penetrating wounds at close range and bruising at medium ranges. There is also "muzzle blast" - a cloud of hot, expanding gas expelled at extremely high velocity from the muzzle of the firearm. This high velocity gas can inflict severe injury (see powerhead for an example) at close ranges. In addition, if there is any small debris lodged inside the barrel it will be expelled at a velocity similar to that of a bullet, with the ability to inflict a severe or lethal wound. Furthermore, the extremely loud noise of blanks being fired can damage the hearing of people in the immediate area. gizmodo.com/why-a-gun-loaded-with-blanks-can-still-kill-you-5972313 Yeah, really kewl, you jerk

Thats not how you do a 40k reference, you actually have to consider the history behind those names before you throw them in. Skitarii are the warriors of the Mechanicum, they didnt exist before the cult itself was created. In the Age of Strife bolters were already wide-known and simple enough to manufacture even on worlds as primitive as Caliban, for example. Skitarii cant become Tech Priests - even more, they are so simple that at times they can be remotely controlled by an actual adept. And... a moustache joke, really?

To get people up and fighting back needs a quick accurate schock" only once saw the very underwelming effect of a fairly accurately placed 40mm. In my co. As they say, necessity is the mother of invention, with a lot of crims finally wising up to be being shot through any part of their get away vehicles with the FAL they started installing sheet metal in the doors and walls. Once the crims reach a certain part of their territory, it's no longer safe to pursue on the ground, the light armoring they were giving their vehicles was enough to give them time to get away without being shot. Hand held 40mm or mounted 40 are just not practical enough for urban usage. However, with this weapon, 1 guy can hang out the window of the pursuit vehicle, pop a few rounds into the first vehicle then move straight onto the next and so on, with a high degree of confidence of not only hitting the target but completely eliminating any internal resistance. This is how SA deal with murderous scum.

William Sager because it isn't *_AMERICAN, f//ck yeah!_* It's the same story as with all NATO equipment. Someone comes up with great design, americans say they want a copy of their own equipement and won't accept anything else then they try to sell their own production to everyone since it's already ready... usually they still lose though. That's why we have .308 and 5.56 instead of just .280 British for example. They can still do a few things on their own if the topic is aircraft and navy. However even creating a good tank is beyond them. They needed to parcitipate in two separate joint projects with british and germans to run away with results and use them to build their own thing. So yeah, Abrams is a great germano-british tank:D

If I ever was a machinegunner or a DM in a firefight I'd be pretty quickly zeroing on an enemy carrying one of these for sure.. I agree that thing is a bit of a lump for sure.. I've had my time carrying all sorts of shit on me like SAW's and 24lb anti-tank mines and once you've hauled your ass for about 10 miles you feel pretty much getting rid of your underwear on top of all that gear :D But in an attack situation where it is necessary to put supressive fire against enemy positions there is not much that comes to my mind that would be more practically effective than a couple of guys pumpin' 20mm HE shells at the enemy's face while the rest of the platoon moves forward.

This weapon seems like it would be very well suited as a squad-level fire support weapon. The US military has been looking for something like this for a long time, be it the marines M32 or the Army's XM25, the PAW seems to overcome a lot of the issues either weapon has. While the M32 is a fine weapon system, the fact that it shoots the very low velocity 40mm means that the user has to carry a carbine with him, else he be defenseless/useless in many situations, which means he has two carry two full size weapons, which is very burdensome. Combine this with the fact that the M32's primitive revolver cylinder, making it very slow to reload, and the soldier is probably better off with their M320. Then there's the XM25. Field testing did yield very positive feedback, but its stuck with two issues. Firstly, it's damn expensive, not only does the weapon have some pretty fancy hardware itself, but the cartridges are very costly too. It also is noted that the user probably does need to carry a carbine with the XM25. The PAW seems to solve these problems. Its lack of heavy optical sight giving it presumably lower weight, and smaller size means that issuing the soldier the PAW and a carbine is a much more viable solution. Further, its higher muzzle velocity compared to both the M32 and XM25, as well as much faster reloading and larger magazine size compared to the two respectively, mean that issuing the soldier a PAW and a pistol is possibly a viable choice.

A standard 100 gram 20mm projectile, at over 300m/s... that's roughly the equivalent recoil of FOUR heavy loads of a 12-gauge shotgun being fired simultaneously. More than the .50BMG. And this weapon only weighs 6kg. On balance, I can see why it would be worth it, those suicide trucks loaded with explosives yet covered in welded-on armour plate, if they have a dead-man-switch then they are going to explode wherever you stop them, that means there's a huge value on destroying them at the maximum possible distance, hopefully outside of the lethal blast radius.
@Deraios
@Deraios 6 жыл бұрын
However if such a vehicle is only slightly armored a round that is rated for 6 mm of penetration is going to do absolutely nothing unless you directly hit a weak spot and the shrapnel and explosion will have even less of an effect or armor plating. You easily get 20+ mm penetration on an M2 so you might as well just use it instead. Even most full power .30 cal cartridges get 10+ mm.
@whyjay9959
@whyjay9959 6 жыл бұрын
If I'm calculating correctly(weight in grams multiplied by speed in km/s), 100g at 310 m/s has less recoil than several different .50 BMG projectiles. And that's without including the propellant- I got the impression that higher muzzle velocities require more of it for the same muzzle energy.

If you watch actual footage you sometimes (often?) see a lot of completely covered windshields with basically a driver's hatch that's impossible to hit at any safe range with something like this. And apart from normal cars, sometimes old Soviet APCs are also converted an you can't hope to combat them with a launcher like this. But yes, I would also assume something like this is much more useful to attack infantry in buildings by just shooting the appropriate walls etc.
