This wad can cause severe penetrating wounds at close range and bruising at medium ranges. There is also "muzzle blast" - a cloud of hot, expanding gas expelled at extremely high velocity from the muzzle of the firearm. This high velocity gas can inflict severe injury (see powerhead for an example) at close ranges. In addition, if there is any small debris lodged inside the barrel it will be expelled at a velocity similar to that of a bullet, with the ability to inflict a severe or lethal wound. As they say, necessity is the mother of invention, with a lot of crims finally wising up to be being shot through any part of their get away vehicles with the FAL they started installing sheet metal in the doors and walls. Once the crims reach a certain part of their territory, it's no longer safe to pursue on the ground, the light armoring they were giving their vehicles was enough to give them time to get away without being shot. Hand held 40mm or mounted 40 are just not practical enough for urban usage. However, with this weapon, 1 guy can hang out the window of the pursuit vehicle, pop a few rounds into the first vehicle then move straight onto the next and so on, with a high degree of confidence of not only hitting the target but completely eliminating any internal resistance. This is how SA deal with murderous scum.

Someone comes up with great design, americans say they want a copy of their own equipement and won't accept anything else then they try to sell their own production to everyone since it's already ready... usually they still lose though. That's why we have .308 and 5.56 instead of just .280 British for example. They can still do a few things on their own if the topic is aircraft and navy. However even creating a good tank is beyond them. They needed to parcitipate in two separate joint projects with british and germans to run away with results and use them to build their own thing. A standard 100 gram 20mm projectile, at over 300m/s... that's roughly the equivalent recoil of FOUR heavy loads of a 12-gauge shotgun being fired simultaneously. More than the .50BMG. And this weapon only weighs 6kg. On balance, I can see why it would be worth it, those suicide trucks loaded with explosives yet covered in welded-on armour plate, if they have a dead-man-switch then they are going to explode wherever you stop them, that means there's a huge value on destroying them at the maximum possible distance, hopefully outside of the lethal blast radius.
@Deraios6 жыл бұрын
However if such a vehicle is only slightly armored a round that is rated for 6 mm of penetration is going to do absolutely nothing unless you directly hit a weak spot and the shrapnel and explosion will have even less of an effect or armor plating. You easily get 20+ mm penetration on an M2 so you might as well just use it instead. Even most full power .30 cal cartridges get 10+ mm.

If I'm calculating correctly(weight in grams multiplied by speed in km/s), 100g at 310 m/s has less recoil than several different .50 BMG projectiles. And that's without including the propellant- I got the impression that higher muzzle velocities require more of it for the same muzzle energy.

If you watch actual footage you sometimes (often?) see a lot of completely covered windshields with basically a driver's hatch that's impossible to hit at any safe range with something like this. And apart from normal cars, sometimes old Soviet APCs are also converted an you can't hope to combat them with a launcher like this. But yes, I would also assume something like this is much more useful to attack infantry in buildings by just shooting the appropriate walls etc.

I really like the design with the boxy magazine and the whole slightly futuristic look. Six rounds don´t sound that much but everything that takes six small grenades already goes beyond just regular law enforcement. There are not that many grenade launchers like that it seems which is too bad, it´s a cool concept.

remember that bolters fire self propelled rounds, so more like rockets, not grenades
@ambrosiogiovanni69526 жыл бұрын
Actually the grenade part is fine, that's why a RPG is called RPG (rocket-propelled grenade), the rocket part is more to "deliver" the grenade faster and add more penetration. Basically what we need is to put gyrojets into these rounds and we have a Bolter.
@SampoPaalanen6 жыл бұрын
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who tought of that but yeah in military terms it's perfectly valid to called a bolter ammo grenades, tough I suspect "shell" would be more accurate. what makes a rocket a rocket is the delivery system (aka a rocket engine) technically even a missile is a rocket just a guided one.
@leftwardglobe16436 жыл бұрын
While that's true about a bolter having gyrojets, that comes with all sorts of issues in regards to accuracy. They still use gunpowder aswell for an initial boost, but that can warp the nozzles, cause even more issues with velocity than the actual gyrojets had, etc. This is a far more stable design that fills the same function. also, it's called RPG because of the Russian acronym: РПГ (literally their letters for R, P, and G) which stands for ручной противотанковый гранатомёт, which means "hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher."

This weapon seems like it would be very well suited as a squad-level fire support weapon. The US military has been looking for something like this for a long time, be it the marines M32 or the Army's XM25, the PAW seems to overcome a lot of the issues either weapon has. While the M32 is a fine weapon system, the fact that it shoots the very low velocity 40mm means that the user has to carry a carbine with him, else he be defenseless/useless in many situations, which means he has two carry two full size weapons, which is very burdensome. Combine this with the fact that the M32's primitive revolver cylinder, making it very slow to reload, and the soldier is probably better off with their M320. Then there's the XM25. Field testing did yield very positive feedback, but its stuck with two issues. Firstly, it's damn expensive, not only does the weapon have some pretty fancy hardware itself, but the cartridges are very costly too. It also is noted that the user probably does need to carry a carbine with the XM25. The PAW seems to solve these problems. Its lack of heavy optical sight giving it presumably lower weight, and smaller size means that issuing the soldier the PAW and a carbine is a much more viable solution. Further, its higher muzzle velocity compared to both the M32 and XM25, as well as much faster reloading and larger magazine size compared to the two respectively, mean that issuing the soldier a PAW and a pistol is possibly a viable choice.
@stevepirie81306 жыл бұрын
