We stumbled upon Shane doing ding repair in Bylesy's used surfboard shop outside Byron Bay. After defeating Kelly Slater at the Coke Classic at Narrabeen in 1992, Shane Herring was proclaimed the greatest Australian surfer since Michael Peterson. But cover shots, a six-figure salary and endless parties eventually undid the focus and determination of this rising star. In a post Andy Irons world, Shane's story serves as a cautionary tale for up-and-coming surfers regarding the dangerous effects fame and money can have on fragile young egos. Over a cigarette and bottle of wine, Shane shares some of his struggles and life lessons in this episode of Korduroy's InnerViews.

Shano…. from Dee Why ? Just a bloke that loves what he is doing. At one point in time it happened to be surfing. He became the Charles Bukowski of surfing….. he didn't even have to try. Pure passion. If there is a problem its the world and how they register characters like this. Nice work Derek, your a true cat.

Bukowski kept writing. Never gave up. The hedonism was perfect for his writing style.

sad to say i was on the same surfboard team with this guy and spent a week with him in margaret river when he was at the peak of his powers. as a young aspiring pro-am surfer i looked up to herro so much. i hope he will be okay. much love to him.

I completely understand what they're talking about.the first thing you do when you take off on a wave I don't care if it's 1 foot or 8 feet, that first long drawn-out proper bottom turn sets everything else in motion.

Shredder Shane👍. Mid week late 90’ south Avalon slightly onshore but the right hand bank was “on.” Just me and Shane out rights past the clubhouse and he was so on fire!

Kelly is a pompous clown who cares about nothing but money and himself. He sucks. Great surfer.. one of the best, if not THE best.. still a wanka tho. An absolute arse of a human. As are ALL successful people in 2021. Disgusting grubs who will end up in hell no doubt. Haha.. So.. Good on ya hero mate.. Ya groupie.. Success fan boy. Haha.. It'll all come to zilch in the end. Dereck Hind the king of the cheap shot. Shane needs help , mentoring and support, rather than being a vehicle for you to maintain media presence.You should be ashamed of yourself, if that is at all possible for you. You represent all that is unhealthy in surfing. Your time would be better spent fixing up your very ordinary surfing style.
