I already have a 3100rs. I was gifted a 5310. What are the big difference between the 2 before I open up the box.

The 3100RS and 5310 have the same features and coverage. The only differences are the colors and what brick and mortar stores carry them. For example, AutoZone sells the 3100RS while O'Reilly Auto Parts sells the 5310.

It will depend on the features you're looking for and the year, make, model, and engine size of vehicle if features are supported. The 5310 is a great tool to start with if you want to read & erase check engine, ABS, and SRS codes. The 5310 supports Live data, battery/alternator test, Oil Reset, and provides drive cycle procedures for Pending codes too. Also, you can use the free, but optional RS2 app that pairs with the 5310 to provide fix information with replacement parts. No, the 5310 cannot clear hard codes that are stored after a vehicle accident. Also, known as crash data. These codes are with the SRS module and other hardware issues. Yes, the 5310 can clear soft codes. These are codes that indicate a fault with an SRS system part/component such as - driver airbag codes - seat belt codes - impact sensor codes
