My buddy had a house in North Las Vegas; it had Astroturf in the front yard, since it was too hot and dry for real grass. His HOA got on his case for not sweeping off his astroturf often enough, which became dusty, and trapped blown leaves and twigs in it. The solution? A leaf blower.

After watching Ian's Q&A 24 I decided to chime in here. I trained with a variant of this rifle (R4) as my service weapon in the Namib desert in the mid 80's (2nd South African Battalion Group, Walvis Bay). Sandstorms were a regular occurrence and our R4s performed well in these tough conditions. The Golani performed about as I expected. The integral bipod was mostly used in the 99.9 % of the time you were not shooting. You inevitably have to put your rifle down to do push ups or dig a hole or whatever. When you are in a world sized sand box the bipod saves you from repeating your dust test every time you have to put your rifle down.

Dust tests are probably more accurate of what combat arms encountered in most of the 20th century. There's so many interesting arms which saw service in the Middle East, some exclusively (Hakim, Rashid, SAFN49, Israeli FAL, this Galil/Golani, AKMs, SKSes, etc).
@filipskotnica9715 жыл бұрын
My Theory for the 2 different reliability results: What happened in the first test (the one with the "bad" magazine) is the sand you didn't yet blow out from the receiver, went into the mag, and then caused the problems. In the second test you actually did blow out the sand from the receiver, so it couldn't get into the mag while the rifle was being fired. Therefore the second test ran fine...

I used to have a golani but sold it for a surplus M16A1 parts kit after I noticed peening inside the receiver. What might be a better assesment of the gun is to sand it up with a magazine full of dummy rounds, then switch it out for a live magazine before the shooting test. This way you remove the possibility of a magazine failure and are focusing purely on the guns performance. It would also add consitancy to the chamber clearing you where doing by blowing out the dust as the majority of the loose sand/dust should fall free then.
@textB00Kcase5 жыл бұрын
Repeatable test.. Use a 50 gallon drum with the blower mounted through a hole in the bottom of the drum to "swirl" the dust around the weapon . Use the same material (dust) in the drum each time to the same level. Time how long the blower is one for and use that every time.

Great idea, sounds like a good way to have standardized test layout.
@dio36935 жыл бұрын
IMO the test wasn't hard enough. You shook and blew the dust out of it too much before trying to chamber a round and fire. I'd suggest wedging an earplug in the muzzle, then dusting the rifle and try firing without clearing any debris first.

@inrangtv a couple of things you said in passing gave me a few ideas. First. Is there a way to quantify remediation. I know you are not necessarily going for a strictly scientific test; however, I think it would be very useful to keep a metric of how many different thing you tried to remove debris. Categorize them by what was an obvious safety hazard and had to be done before safe firing could be reasonably assured, and actions that were called for after the malfunction of the firearm or to get the weapon to function in the first place (blowing into the action and dumping the dirt out before chambering the first round, for example). Recording what techniques worked, how many were needed, and how many times each technique would an interesting metric to factor into which weapon performed better or worse than its competitors. The second thing that occurred to me is this. Lubrication. I am in complete agreement with you that the initial tests be run dry. However, it is fairly common idea to use lubrications as mediation in lue of cleaning in a pinch. My idea here was to add lubrication after the last dose of sand. See how much you need (if it is indeed a need) and how each weapon reacts to the addition of lubricant. It would almost be more interesting to see which weapons performance actually deteriorated with this addition, than which weapons improved. Ultimately it’s your show, I am but a lowly fan. I will continue to enjoy all of your work, however you go about accomplishing it. Excellent video as always guys!

I guess this just means that if you can’t do an extremely tight gun like an AR, this is a good approach. Might malfunction, but reasonably easy to remediate. Probably a better gun for less resourced militaries.
