Why didn't I find this channel sooner?? Damn! Thank you so much, Trent. Just started using sketchbook pro on my pc and I never knew you could add a colour layer. Colouring in sketchbook app has been the hardest for me and this just made my life so much easier. All thanks to you. You just got a new subscriber here.

And besides the fact that your painting look incredible, you actually teach us something, keep it up, I'm waiting for more videos from you because they're helpful and I really need them!

I love your videos man, just found you a month or so ago. You've got a good positivity and it's nice having your artwork playing in the background. I usually listen while working, and taking glances at the screen to see your process for a minute. - By the way I don't even use sketchbook pro. Pretty sure you've heard of procreate, but man it's so good for this kind of work.

I am still overly fond of directly painting in color over a sketch but it's so true that having values figured out first makes the construction of an image faster and easier. I feel like I went through phases and I am circling back to fundamentals again for a refresher. I started out with grey scale images years back and utilized color/multiply/overlay. The technique has a lot of color theory potential granted if overlays incorporate color (cuzz blending). But it's odd, I just found myself painting directly over the years, not needing or wanting to bother in black and white. Now, as I try to tackle larger images I have to stop myself and consider where my head is at (I'm going around and around my pallet when I should be focused on value and shape). Ah, the joy of painting :P

Ummmmm, Trent? This video was the most precise & informatively straightforward & easy to understand tutorial video, I think you've ever done. Excellent video! I hope you will do more videos about explaining layers & using layers, in sketchbook pro. Perhaps a series of tutorial videos on how to use layers for drawing & colorizing would be something you could do. Thankx for this one; it really helped. ~SKETCHCAT

Happy Birthday Trent!! BTW I got a question I really want to see how u put down colors on your art work. What I mean by that is I want to know how u put down layers from start to finish on a painting it's really confusing to me cause I'm new to digital art . I would love to see the whole work process of a piece from start to finish...not necessarily to be a 10hr painting but a simple art and how separate the layers. BTW thank you soo much u inspired me a lot

I use whatever tools get me to the final product faster. This is actually just a quicker way to lay down color. I would then go over the top of it, flatten it and add details. So its really a shortcut, similar to my photoshop gradient map techniques.

Hey Trent, I'm a huge fan of your work, big inspiration for me. I'm in artist in highschool, and i live in a small town in Indiana, so there's not a ton of artistic opportunities/ artists at my school/ area. Heck, my school has one art class and there were like 4 people in it and the teacher hated teaching. My question is, how did you stay sane/ excited about art in highschool? Motivation isn't my problem, I just feel like i'm the only one doing this thing that i love! Again, love your work, and your videos often make my day!

evan avery hey, i m not trent , but just want to told you to never give up art ( musician, painter, etc) and if you are really into it, never stop cause you don't have the possibility to continue. Internet is full of oportunities to learn, to discover, to share, and even to teach. Considering that, you have no excuse to give up. I have finally reached an art school in my country, and this is the most enjoying thing that happen to my whole life.

I think its very valuable to get involved in a community. You can start by posting regularly on deviantart, or artstation. Get to know other artists, and challenge each other. Make a webcomic or indie game and get involved with people who engage your work. Do fan drawings for other people on twitter or youtube and find joy in the challenge. It'll never get easier, but if you love the challenge, you'll get better and stick with it.

Thanks so much for the replies everyone. Iv'e been experimenting with instagram, but i think i'll try out deviant art and a few other platforms, and try to get my work out there a little more. I really have a passion for this stuff and have so much fun doing it and want to work hard to improve. So much to learn! Thanks again Trent for being such an awesome creator, maybe some day i''ll make an art youtube channel of my own and we could collab or something! Your a huge inspiration
