My first big campaign had a DMPC. He was actually decent, and filled in a role that the party lacked (battle cleric healer). He was great support and didn't hog the spotlight and was a lot of fun to romance. I wish more DMs would run them like that.
@kyuven3 жыл бұрын
Your DM sounds like they ran them as an "accessory" rather than a main character, which is what DMPCs should be. Players are often recommended to create a character that supports the party in such a way, but for a DMPC it's a straight up requirement. The DMPC should never be the face. Healer, tank, damage dealer, or support? Cool. But face? NO! The DM would literally be talking to themselves for hours. It's why my personal policy now is that DMPCs should have CHA as their dump stat unless they're a paladin or bard. Sorcerer too but if I need a DMPC to be an arcane caster, I go with Wizard since i can double them as a knowledge monkey to keep the plot moving as needed.
@felipelopezlima21963 жыл бұрын
Some of the groups I GM for are pretty small, so I have more than one DMPC. I usually just use them to fill a gap in the party or for a specific section of the plot (almost like temporary guest characters). I take care to never overdo it too much and always try not to outshine the players (to the point of fudging rolls so I wouldn't get the kill of important enemies). That being said, I do try to have fun with this and play some character concepts I'm curious about, but not really interested in playing them as a PC for a long campaign. My players are aware of this and don't mind it (in one of my games, they're "demanding" I keep the character around cus they like interacting with her.... lol)

I like how morbid curiosity is the OP's reason for staying in that sh!t show of a furry campaign. That is the only valid reason for staying in a dumpster fire of a campaign, any other reason can be summed up as "I was too stupid to leave". (I'm a furry myself, but I despise people who idiotically discriminate like they did. There was once a time when the furry fandom was about inclusivity and tolerance, but that has been betrayed in not-even-all-that-recent-anymore years. People like them, who harass others for being human in a game, are the kind of people that brought undue ruin and turmoil to the fandom.)
@shadenox81642 жыл бұрын
Speaking as a furry you need to be cautious of any furry who says "There was once a time when the furry fandom was about inclusivity and tolerance." or "ruin to the fandom" because nine times out of ten what they mean is that they're an asshole and other furries are less inclined to put up with them being assholes these days. I was around for those mythical times of "inclusivity" it just had a lot more rampant sexism, homophobia and racism because people felt like they had to put up with it due to not having a lot of people to share the interest with. I'll take present day thanks. Inclusivity and tolerance doesn't mean someone can do whatever they want and expect people to want to hang out with them if they find what you did awful or are just genuinely unpleasant. That being said, this group does sound like dicks but they sound a lot like the furries who would be rueing that you can't be an asshole anymore.
@theuncalledfor2 жыл бұрын
@@shadenox8164 How long ago was that? I don't remember encountering any racism or sexism in the furry fandom. Or at the very least none that is accepted. That would go against the very values I was talking about. I'm talking about shaming and ostracisation of "unhealthy" fetishes. Mind-boggling hypocrisy, considering the fandom is specifically about something that is seen as weird, and judged by intolerant jerks that would throw you into a mental ward, or worse, for any deviation from what's considered "normal". Though I think a bunch of the non-sexual furries have always been judgemental pricks that have condemned the sexual side of the furry fandom in order to be considered less "weird" by others, or worse, genuinely bought into that kind of putrid, prudish ideology.

As a furry, with a fairly furry D&D group, we have a human, a half elf, an eladrin, a dwarf and the two non furries in the group are the ones playing a dragonborn and a kenku. The dragonborn player thinks dragons are rad and the breath attack is spiffy. While the kenku went with it because it lends to the whole assassin thing he has going. Being able to mimic voices of other people, super handy. So while yeah, it is D&D and you can play whatever race you want, sometimes you just want to go with a race for the bonuses or the backstory idea you have.

Yep, I usually play tieflings. The most furry trash I've been was reskinning tengus in pathfinder as a jackal people from Orsrion because I had this idea for a bunch of jackal people adherent to Anubis that guarded tombs, but less in the "stopping grave robbers" sense and more in the "making sure the dead remain dead". I went with tengu because I could swap in for a really neat carrion sense ability which allowed my guy to be able to smell bloodied people or dead bodies. I...huh. Well. That was something. I'm not able to voice-act anymore due to past illness, but I do still try and make the characters distinct and interesting for my group. ...And that's definitely not a way to do a DMPC. The only one I have is a background fella they can talk to that lets them stand tall, and I treat him as I would any other character, really-they see any rolls I make with him, and if he fails, he fails. Kind of funny, really, and the only time he goes anywhere is if the team asks him to offer some backup. (So far the most impressive thing he's done was manage to grapple a wolf just long enough for someone to kill it.) Even with good stats (the party is better) everyone appears to have the perception of a lead brick when it comes to even social cues. It's made for entertaining moments, at least, including our rogue attempting to perform the temple of doom stunt with a giant stinkbug where you try and rip its heart out, and failing badly enough he got his hand stuck in the creature's back and ended up knocking out the fighter as he waved it around in a panic and, I kid you not, the fighter failed so hard that the creature not only still managed to parry him, but retaliated hard enough to stun him twice before the rogue decided that smacking the creature into a wall would do the trick. As everyone else laughed. Before starting to gag as its dying act was to fumigate the area with its ungodly stench.

Your character doesn't sound like a DMPC. He sounds like a proper NPC companion. A true DMPC is basically the real protagonist of a solo campaign, run by the DM for the DM, and the actual PCs are pretty much his NPC companions. That's not a fun situation to be in as a player, because the DMPC gets all the best gear and gets to have all the cool moments in and out of combat. The story here is all about him, not the players. A proper NPC companion, like what you described, is there to fill a role that the GM thinks needs filling because no player chose to do that. Such a character will take a backseat for the players and let them have their cool moments whenever possible. The story here is all about the players, not that NPC who is just there to support them in their coolness.

It's...sadly amusing, but he's just as lacking in the ability to spot things as everyone else. I mean...heck. That first story reminded my of my first Deathwatch campaign. The game plan was that eventually our characters would eventually fall to Chaos after our GM got the new Dark Crusade book, something that i was okay with, but i wanted it to play out like it was a gradual fall from grace. Some other players in the party just wanted to play Dark Crusade noooowwww so they always went out of their way to try to join the other side. It wound up with me and another player more or less babysitting the other players and DMNPCs coing in to stop us from trying to execute them. Unfortunately at the last battle against some Dark Legion, all but two of the players died so THEY got to play their characters as fallen Chaos marines while the rest of us had to play squishy Chaos worshipers. It was ok, the campaign was still pretty fun, but i really wanted to play an evil version of my Deathwatch character who had very good reason to lose their faith in all they believed in, still a little salty about that.

The polar bear dmpc story reminded me of a recent rpg horror story. So, the DM, we’re call him Nick, and I were on rocky ground because I’m the artist of both the dnd groups and he kept asking me for more and more pictures, and taking the physical forms, without paying for them. Please note that I wasn’t charging anything because I didn’t think a friend would do that to me, but after having to draw two barbarians who had ‘Roar!’ as their only personality trait, I started considering charging for my drawings and was asking other people for input on the prices because I have a bad habit of undercharging myself (do to past trauma that makes me think less of myself). It was after I suggested doing this that I noticed Nick got more and more jerky, even saying hurtful things to me in the dnd session calls he was running. He had a female aasimar paladin character named Sister Ariana who was the group leader and had the last say normally. (Though everyone thought that he was playing a cleric after he left.) Anyway, he was running a world that he was improvising on the fly, so we couldn’t derail the plot. But the thing was that Nick was running his campaign and not the other dnd game we were a part of. The dm who ran the other game was a kind man, who we’ll call Drake. Drake had a co-dm, his son, who we will call Jake. Drake let the group know that he had a one shot campaign set up, if we ever didn’t have enough players to play the main campaign, and to make character for it. I wanted to make a leonin, and asked Drake if leonin were allowed in the campaign. Nick proceeded to start ‘helping’ while never stopping his help even after I told him that I would make the character later twice. (Because in real life I felt like crying from how his helping seemed more worded like talking down to someone.) I then vented in a safe place and got comforted by Nick’s friends and family, who had experience him doing this before. The safe spot was in a server that had to be made in a hurry because Nick thought that dming was too much work and that online dnd was boring. I took the reins of the campaign, even though my dming is not the greatest. I’m forgetful of monster traits or abilities, can’t prepare too much or I lose interest in prepping, and I’m a bundle of nerves. I just didn’t want the campaign to die and wanted everyone to have fun. I constantly worry about making the campaign not fun and worry about doing a terrible job, but I’m willing to try, even if it looks like a pixie trying to carry a batch of bananas. But Nick left all of the servers I’m in. Unfortunately, he came back to Drake’s server and I’m half wondering if he’s trying to get back in the campaign he left that I’m now running, because he’s being nice to me again. Unfortunately for him, I don’t have the ability to give invites to the server, because Marnie (the player who made the server to help me) couldn’t figure out how to change what the people can do in the discord server. I don’t know what to do about Nick, and I half wonder if I’m the asshole in this situation.

I love the blatant stupidity of the argument behind "why is he a human? You can be literally anything you want." While ignoring the fact that anything you want includes human ans anything you want also applies their feelings and opinions are pointless. So clearly he meant the exact opposite of what he said

Another DM that should just write a book and not drive other people crazy. Have heard some stories of DMPC played right, which is have them fill a role the party is missing like a healer or tank for example and have them interact and mingle with the party and not try to do anything against them until maybe near the end of the campaign or to act as a plot twist after recruiting a player that can fill the role the DMPC was filling. Maybe have them be a stay-at-home spouse if one of the players successfully romanced them when the new player joins. Or could even have them keep traveling with the party in case you want to increase the campaign difficulty a little bit, so many options that don't involve making them an OP Mary Sue dragging the poor party around kicking and screaming

“Why is he human?” For awhile I was boring and said I wanted a feat. But now we homebrewed that everyone gets a feat because feats can be interesting and build unique characters. In one of the games I am a reborn elf with shadow touch. In life, she was this Victorian-esque aristocrat who was seen as weird because she could commune with the dead-only to die of mysterious circumstances. And now she’s this quiet caretaker of a crypt and voice for a goddess of death.

If everyone gets a Feat, Variant Human should get two. Since that is _the_ reason to play Variant Human.

Oh vy all that is cringey its these kinds of DMs that just kills games! I have ran into newbee DMs that want to run, but are so lazy to actually do any real work. Grant it it's a very young kid so you can give them some leway because of their age. But this guy is all sorts of messed up that you could write a book on how not to be this guy. Final verdict: Gamer license REVOKED!

I hope the other players didn't stick with the group too long. They didn't sound like they were having very much fun. Being a human in a fantasy session can be really cool. While I prefer more unique choices. A human is the easiest to relate to as a player. For better or worse, you're human in real life. Making a human initially the easiest to play, but also easier to write detailed backstories for.

I feel like I heard of a group like this in either a Crispy or CritCrab video. Shorter story, but they mocked the OP for playing a human and the DM was a dick to him and gave him much less exp than the others, who were playing anthro/anthro-like races.

This whole thing sounds more like a super minor disagreement on the type of game each enjoys rather than a true horror story. Sure the GM sounds cringey but not the worst guy in the world. This guy's attacks on him sounds a bit overblown.

Good lord. I think this was covered by another channel. But the group was just a jerk (Besides the Tabaxi really from what I can tell.) If anything I probably have tried to get along with the Tabaxi and friended them if I was the OP since they were about the only one that OP got along with.

Damn furries. See, this crap is why I left that fandom. "They're not all like that," isn't a good enough excuse to excuse their horrible attitudes towards non-furry *anything*. That being said, I am still friends with several furries, but I want nothing to do with the fandom, which they're understanding of. So yeah. Won't play games with furries.

Depends on how they are played. I accidentally found myself with a DMPC because the party decided to ask the local magic shop owner (a retired level 12 Sorc) to join them on their quest. That said, I found ways to make sure that he could be relied on in certain cases, he was not ever the central focus (and all but useless in combat). He could hold his own or help, but he never drove the story or would take action without direction from a PC.

How terrible this GM introduced RoFM. Is it really so difficult to read a short paragraph in a module before playing and do everything as it is written there, and not do crap.

Normaschthewanderer my dude I am a furry if you aren’t down with the furry weirdness but play with all furries you’re gonna be uncomfortable and they wanna indulge in furry weirdness. So expecting them not to indulge in furry weirdness and then being uncomfortable and complaining is just as bad a situation as feeling subjected to furry weirdness just avoid the situation altogether.

I can think of a comment, but it's not nice. I'm not a tabletopper, I'm a video gamer. And I'll take all the b.s. with dlc, nerfing, lag, patches, and the rest over human interaction any day, because there is nothing more broken than human beings. At least I'm only at the whim of malevolent gods I knowingly sign up for, and whom I pay for the privilege.
