In Indonesia, churches and mosques are categorized as non-profit organizations and therefore aren't taxed. They, however, are obligated by the law to provide reports of both income and outcome to the public. I got called out in a sermon as well. By the backup preacher when the actual preacher was out of town. I was like 17 and was already fed up with the church in general. If my parents had not been there, I would have stood up, glared at him and walked out. This was Church of Christ. So no governing body, no oversight. His whole sermon was calling out all the wrongs he’d been watching and he got his chance to shame us publicly. His wife made me hate my body and certain activities. She never should have been allowed to teach the “young ladies” a class. Disgusting. They were the most crazy and conservative people I’d made. They really gave me the ick from day one. My parents were actually kind and like liberal. They let me go to dances. I had a boyfriend. They were patient with me for the most part. Once I escaped that church in the next year I never went back to services. When one of the guys from the youth group died during the Bush era overseas in the desert, I went to his viewing, and it was an out of body experience. They were reallllyyyyy nice to me.

As a European catholic I find myself so confused with American churches (I know they exist in Europe too, they’re just super uncommon where I live) When I went to church usually you paid somewhere between €0,50 to €5 for tide and five euros is seen as a lot if they’re not doing some charity event. We don’t have memberships and everyone can follow a sermon and they don’t even have to pay tide it’s just a charity thing. Yeah I know I’m just talking about the Catholic Church but Protestant churches here are have the same principles. So yeah idk american religion can be so wild sometimes
@Raicheru135 ай бұрын
I had no idea this was considered standard. We always passed a basket around at the Catholic church I attended as a kid. (I'm no longer a member. As an adult I felt was was not for for me.) Willingly supporting a center of faith makes sense to me, but being required to pay money in order to worship and be part of a church is utterly ridiculous.

If you don't for a while the bishop or the accountant will have a discreet private meeting with you. I doing remember some meetings were private growing up. Oh yeah, My dad was an accountant for the 28th ward back in the late 90s to 2000. I remember him telling me some stuff about it. But my Mom would force my siblings and me to always put aside 10% for our tithe from our allowance when we were kids. And she would make us feel bad if we complained Hahaha but yeah you're right
@Abigail_Monteith5 ай бұрын
@@klakatyklak6826 lol yeah, well the reason for that is more religious. It's believed that when you give to the lord you also receive, which is another reason so many people do still pay tithing even in an economy like this one. It's also why so many parents teach their kids to give tithing with their allowance, so they can realize how even a little bit can go a long way. The bishop may meet with you for the same reason. They believe you could be missing some blessings you could receive if you were giving tithing. Like I said though, it all depends on what you believe in at the end of the day.

I’ve never been to or heard of a church that requires 10% of your earnings in order to be a member. They certainly never asked for a tax return to make sure people were tithing enough. That sounds insane to me, I would run the other direction.

No. U need to pay $1000 membership fee + 10% of your income, not just 10% of your income.

I don’t know of a single church in the modern day that requires a monthly subscription, a tithe, and your tax return!?! They get protected status so they don’t require these from the communities coffers. Too many “churches” are using this protected status for greedy means, and it disgusts me.

I've been on staff or volunteer leadership at several churches. 10% is a reference point that many follow but there is no set number. Some don't give at all, some give much more than 10%. It is true that some churches do require you to regularly give to be a member and that CAN be done without it being a big deal, it's a red flag imo. No church I have ever heard of asks for tax returns

The thing is... this is a pretty common practice in a lot of evangelical/protestant churches in the US. At least the more "organized" ones. I specify protestant and evangelical because I'm catholic and I've never once been told any form of donation is a necessity, let alone something as extreme as an exact 10% of your monthly taxable income. Idk if the Orthodox are different though. Do let me know if you have experience.

As someone from the south who grew up very involved in a protestant denomination (my mom was a pastor so I ended up having to be at church often), the 10% thing was a thing but it wasn't something that was _required_ , it was just encouraged if you could afford it. And the money would go towards the expenses required to run the church, which I really doubt is the case for the one in the video

Tithing is absolutely a normal thing at churches, albeit its normally an encouraged thing, not enforced. Its a way to both pay for the church as well as help the members or the community. Done correctly without the corruption of people/denominations, tithe is a great system that actually started things like Salvation Army and many other large humaitarian efforts.
@Chaelsonen5 ай бұрын
it is, but its also a questionable tactic that lets be honest, churches started. Not the person everyone looks up to. His emphasis was on helping people who couldnt afford a tithe, and the expectation of these things is to go towards that. Not towards a new "rec room". and its certainly not something that is meant to gatekeep the less fortunate from the building.
@picklelord49325 ай бұрын
Enforced tithing for membership is shockingly common if you want to become a "member" vs someone who just attends services. I know of multiple churches in my area that operate off this business model
