The Olympic Men's Four of 2021 in Tokyo saw more drama than expected. UK had steering issues, Italy came back from nowwhere to make a medal and Romania almost caught Australia on the line. WHAT A RACE!

As I recall, the Italians also raced the A Final with a spare after covid excluded one of their athletes 💪

With the positivity discovrred the morning of the final, leading to the replacement of Rosetti with Di Costanzo, who was supposed to row the pair semi-final on the same day. The medal was a victory itself of a bet made over two crews.

Had the opportunity to coach this last season with Alex Hill , the stroke of the Australian 4. Interestingly, the AUS 4 had not had a competitive race since the 2019 Word Champs (where they bombed out and came last in the final). He mentioned that the AUS 4 were aware of what was going on with the GB crew and Italy, and were almost caught napping by the Romanians. BTW he has a PB of 5.42 for his 2K and is the Australian single sculler for this years world champs. Will be interested to see how he can go in this new boat class.

Hi aram, i'm an Italia junior nationa team rower and i see every day the italian's olympic crew traning. They can sprint like that because they are extremely hungry for victory, in the Italian Olympic team there is an air that smells of "never give up until the end", i believe that this mentality makes the difference even in very strong athletes and also in important competitions such as the Olympics!

Excellent analysis. Thank you, Aran...it was a shocking collision due to appallingly bad steering/ spacial awareness from GB. Hats off to the extraordinarily switched on Italians for ploughing on. Yes, Aussies are boat-movers...well spotted ref using outside hand for squaring-feathering (not as totally as Tomkins!). Keep the vids coming...you are providing a wonderful service.

In my personal opinion I believed it was almost fated that GB wouldn't win gold, after the 2019 European championship results, then covid and the loss of Jurgen as the head coach. I couldn't see a way, then the 2021 European cup came around and we did well I thought that maybe they had really solidified their oppurtunity. I stayed up till 4am(UK time of the final) to watch the final I couldn't believe how good the Australians were, they deserved the gold without issue, I just wish we didn't have the steering issues.

Hi Aram This has to be one of your best videos 😂🤣 ❤️loved your sense of humour and the way you analysed each crew . It’s so true what you said about the Italians ! We do have a sense of never giving up and surprising everyone at the end! Leave the best for later 😂 being myself half Italian and learning to row in a British crew I ‘m taking the best of both worlds! Piano piano se va lontano !😆 I liked the way you scrutinised the Australians , too! Lots to learn from your videos ! Thank you !A Ferrari and a Rolls Royce head to head 🤔 comparison came to my mind…

Always love hearing your comments on mechanics. As a road cyclist, it’s always easier to chase that rabbit compared to holding the lead. In front, it’s just pain, in the back…it’s focus on that target, followed by the pain. Just a question of where you wanna burn those matches. AUS is really beautiful to watch. How many crews run the rigging (bow and stern on same side) like AUS?

Tandem rig, or "Frig rigginng" as we used to call it back in the 80's when I rowed, is a rigging option to help balance the boat. Conventional rig has a slight mechanical advantage to the bow (starboard) side rowers. If the boat goes straight with conventional rig, then fine. If not, then a tandem rig is quite common. One rough rule of thumb I once heard is to add up the seat numbers. If they equal each other, then that's the best option. So, in a tandem rig, add bow (1) and stroke (4) = 5 and then add the tandem rig i.e 2 & 3 and you also get 5.

An interesting side note to this analysis, is that three from the Australian men's four, are now in the Australian men's 8 for the Paris Olympics. It seems like Rowing Australia are chasing the one Men's Olympic medal that they have never been able to win. Fingers crossed!!!

The steering issues were actually due to power imbalances in the GB crew's sprint. You can see the boat drifts over to Australia's lane, as stroke side is pushing a little harder early inti the last 500, so the bowman was forced to overcorrect In order to stay out of the Aussie lane. The 2 man then died , so the boat veered over to the Italian lane, which the bowman was then forced to overcorrect again.

I really find 4-'s amazing because at olympics and stuff they're coxless, so just amazing ammount of intuitive trust, sense, and non verbal communication through physical movement. and these lads are just wow smashing the water, literally feel like they're moving the earth not the water haha

Use to compete quite a bit against Clark Dean in high school. Definitely a big kid who could rip some insane times. Pulling sub 6 in his senior maybe even junior year of high school! Not surprised he managed to find his way into the Olympics.

rowing is first about politics and maybe short before the finish line its about the tactics for the final sprint, at least on the nationals federations and all their decisions. But Grobler had been phenomenal and close to the athletes and especially those who did not make it into the boat. Great guy, big loss as the british might have learned the hard way. And if Grobler even went to the french then they must have issues in rowing GB before he had gone.

They do lots of very long intense stuff though, their aerobic capacity is certainly very high. They also test some odd metre long distance intervals.

I’m a complete novice who has only done one season(US high school racing, going to Stotes & SRAA nattys), but all of the 4+s I’ve seen have had coxes. Why do Olympic 4s (or professional 4s) do not? And do they only steer with oar power?
@KerenWang

Foot steering. Coxed 4- used to be an Olympic boat class. They scratched it in the 90s. So essentially your right foot is loose and you pivot your foot in order to steer.
@AramTraining
@AramTraining 2 жыл бұрын
As Keren said it, many boats have been scratched from the Olympic program. Unfortunately. E-Games recently came on board, though.

I know quite well the type of training of the Italian rowers and the Italian national team. Cross country work is represented in a very important way in the first part of the season during which the athletes work on the basis of 30 km per day by boat with variations of pace and speed to optimize aerobic capacity and VO2 max. This training is then maintained throughout the season while training for high intensity work. The problem is not that of unbalanced high-intensity training because it would not make sense on a biological level. If you are unable to synthesize ATP you immediately go anaerobic and stop earlier even if you do a lot of high intensity work. I therefore believe that these are mainly race strategies that are studied crew by crew

If we have ultra modern Drone machines, how come we don't have ultra modern steering in rowing shells keeping them straight. Once a Rowing Shells Guidance System locks in on their Lane Transponder. Auto Pilot steering should bring that shell right down the pike to the finish line. Cross the finish line, and steering drops out. Please take away human error from the competitor and let them race.

Hi Aram, have you seen the 2022 world rowing cup lightweight men's single sculls A-final? I would love to see an analysis video of the difference in stroke rate between Tibo Vyvey and Rajko Hrvat because those where some really different tactics and cool to see the much lower stroke rate come out on top.

Bruh I hate it when politics fuck with rowing that happened in my club and it lead to us having no program from 9 weeks out from Nat schools and we only got a program again 1 week out every boat dropped down by a whole final and we had to use worse boats because the coaches that left owned the good boats
