This 2012 Olympic final had all of its excitement condensed into the last 500m. The New Zealand double went from 5th place at the 1500m mark to winning Gold at the 2000m finish line. Overtaking the legendary Slovenian double of Iztok Cop and Luka Spik and the beautifully rowing Italians with Luca Batista and the 2000 Olympic Champion Alessio Sartori. A final with big names, and big drama.
This video is not about technique, it is about rowing with guts, and your heart in your hands. Joseph Sullivan and Nathan Cohen are two of my all time greatest rowers.

I absolutely loved the energy from this video!! Its tis type of race that inspires those magical stories about rowing; the inhuman passion drive/sprint that shoots a crew through the finish first against the odds. I always get the 2017 world's Lodo and Vicino pair vibes, just channelling the passion and drive for victory. Videos like this are fantastic! Loved it, and 10/10 Italian accent Aram

Canadian Beijing mens eight next?! Debatably one of the most brash technique seen this century, but absolute tanks of grit.

I can't find footage of it now, but I also remember how gracious the Slovenians and Italians were on the podium. Cop was all class, and Sartori in particular, with a bagful of career medals and in what looked like a winning position, looked absolutely ecstatic with his medal. It cemented my impression of them both as being among rowing's really good guys.

It doesn't matter how often I watch this video I can never see them win from 1500m. This crew inspired me as a 5'10" Masters rower more than any other. Thanks for sharing.

Fighting for what you believe in. Yeah! Thank you for a wonderful analysis. I've used this race many times in my corporate presentations to illustrate the never give up motto, David and Goliath etc, and it always gets the heart ticking and eyes leaking. Nathan and Joe are, rightly so, hero's of the Kiwi community.

its the best race ive ever seen in my years watching rowing. Might not have looked as nice as the other crews but they were nearly perfectly synced. Quick round the finish too so that boat is running fast!

I watched this video yesterday for the fist time; I'm a Mahe Drysdale fan! But I marvelled at their sheer tenacity at the end. Such a well timed race for both rowers. I'm a Māori NZer and so it was even sweeter viewing. Cheers!

This race,the Searle brother coxed pairs at Barcelona,the French winning the coxless pairs at Sydney are some of the greatest races ever,but for me it is out of the Kiwi's in this race and the sensational win by the the Greek god in Men's single at Tokyo.

This race was very satisfying for meto watch. In a past life, I was an average club rower at the end of my career in the boat, and looking for new challenges. A young up and comer ( Joe ) needed a single to train in, and my boat was doing nothing. A few years later ( and a respectable career as a junior ), this race happens. As a side note, I got to catch up with Joe as my work has me doing hydraulic stuff for high-performance yachts. The ETNZ people needed some work done, and guess who the delivery guy happened to be.

@@AramTraining Interesting that since then many NZ crews have implemented a similar strategy in the decade following these two according to some commentators referring to the "Trademark New Zealand third quarter". Unfortunately NZ are in a rebuilding phase with lots of retirements leading into 2024. The 2023 Elite team has just been released and its looking very light this year.

The Kiwi 2x looks wild, but there are some big points they're nailing to be at the business end of the sprint - e.g. the leg drive & upper body angles . The Irish LM2x in Tokyo also looks bananas. I have a wild theory that dogged adherence to rowing "perfectly" is a barrier to the personal expression that you see from crews like this - maybe technique is really perfect when it acts form of physical and emotional expression? Check out cross-country skiers like Klaebo or Northug, sprinting for the finish. They've definitely internalised the technical nuances that you need to ski quickly, but when they "explode" at the end of a race, it's pure passion. Maybe technique is only really perfect when you make it your own? Maybe rowing small boats is more Hendrix than Beethoven? Less about the collective, more space for personal expression?

In the final 400 meters he Kiwi's seem to be accelerating the boat their boat with their hip flexors and hamstrings on the recovery much better than their opponents. Fast slides on the recovery doesn't seem to be slowing them down.

Aran, love to watch your videos. Keep up the good work😊 Not to minimise the Kiwi success but I do have a recolection of this racecourse being extra unfair with the wind distribution, giving the Kiwi double extra luck in the last 500m. And that it was a matter of discussion later on because of this race. Perhaps you can dig out some facts?
@HKT1913
@HKT1913 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. I don't think that affected this race - I think the wind distribution gave an unfair advantage to the outside lane (the one with the Italians) and impeded those in the middle and top on the first final day, hence moving the top seed to the near lane in subsequent days. I think it was the lw 4 where the gb lost from the middle lane to the SA crew from one of the near lanes that cause the discussion:)

Aram, there is one thing that is kind of controversial topic and that coaches never want to talk about. It's fluid dynamics and getting f-ed by Navier-Stokes. What I'm talking about is different wind velocities across lanes. I have seen and even participated in races in which unfair advantages/disadvantages due to wind were blatantly obvious. While I'm not saying that this was the case in this race, but you have to take into consideration that there are things happening inside this complex system that can't be seen on the race footage. But I know it's utopia to think about removing wind from the equation, because that would entail building a 2km long race track indoors. 😆
