Someone who was attempting to escape prison actually attempted a modern version of the Kangaroo story. Unfortunately the guards and the dogs just saw their dinner and attempted to kill him, forcing him to surrender and reval himself.

You could be sentenced to transportation for literally anything back then. Even something as petty as stealing bread. Or being unable to pay a small debt. One of my male ancestors was sent from a debtors prison in Britain, sentenced to transportation to the Americas, and sold into indentured servitude.

Something similar happened in Quebec Canada, the friends of a convict went on a helicopter tour than took the pilot hostage and forced him to fly over the prison yard and they dropped a rope ladder down to their buddy, got caught not long after though
