Awesome video! Guy is an impressive shot. Looking forward to the future UR PRS shooting team. And for precision 223, I have what I call a target 223 AR-15. The barrel is from Compass Lake Engineering (CLE) and is chambered in CLE 223, Aero Precision M4E1 receiver set, Timney trigger, JP bolt properly headspaced, and a Bushnell Tac Optics 6-24 scope. I have Lapua brass, Berger 80gr VLD Target bullets, VV N540 powder, and CCI SRPs. I'm still in the load development phase, so I don't have results yet.

Get a progressive man. Single stage presses take so freaking long. Unless you want the most precision you can. I reload to make better ammo for cheaper and get more precise loads and shoot a ton more. Over 3 hours of reloading I will put out 1000 rounds of 223, 308 or 300 blackout and rip those. It would take me a week to do that on a single stage. Single stage is for retired people with nothing to do, shooters who want to shoot in the same hole or professionals shooters. Get yourself a Dillon xl750. It’s already paid for itself in less than a year for me.

Gavin, Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your knowledge with the community. I’ve been shooting and reloading for decades, but I am new to precision shooting and reloading. I’ve learned so much about great gear and good process by watching your channel. Here is the $64,000 question though… Of all the various steps involved in reloading, what are the top 10 (in order) that affect accuracy? Is it powder type and quantity? Is it brass prep (but which step, is it neck sizing or…) Is it bullet selection Is it bullet seating depth Etc. Etc. As someone new to the hobby of precision shooting, I’m slowly acquiring new gear quarter by quarter. I’m also an engineer, so I’d like to apply the “theory of constraints” to my gear acquisition and refining my process. In other words, I’d like to tackle the things that matter most (for accuracy) first. Thanks in advance for your answer, and thanks again for all the great info on this channel.

Sorry, just saw this. I think that my biggest accuracy improvements came with using all quality components, and also paying a lot of attention to seating the bullet straight, really straight, with good quality dies. None of the other stuff seemed to matter nearly as much.

Forster is good equipment, but it's not the only game in town. I use a Whidden micrometer die set for 6BR, and no case reads more than .001. Many show a zero reading. I have to quibble with that primer seater. It may be OK with Lapua brass, but on mixed cases, it is a disaster. There is not enough leverage, and little feel. I junked it and got the RCBS bench primer tool. Happy now.

I only use LEE’s carbide dies for pistols and revolvers and even won a few local championships with my reloads. Their dies are excellent for the price and, to be honest, better than pricier brands that don’t even use carbide and require lubrication. For bolt action rifles I prefer Redding Type S dies (L.E. Wilson seating die on the way), because of micrometer and bushing options for precision shooting. For semi-autos I’ve been experiencing with Lee’s ultimate die set: the collet system theoretically uniforms yours necks on the inside and on the outside, arguably giving you consistent neck tension (I don’t have the time to neck turn 400-500 5.56s for plinking like I do with 50-100 .308s for precision). In short, for anything other than high precision rifle reloading, LEE dies are the best value you can get.

So I just built a precision 223, chambered in 223 Wylde. I just shot some of the best groups of my life on Friday. I was using the 80 grain Berger Target bullets using Tac Powder. I was wondering if you you could possibly do some heavy 223 loads. Like 80-88 grain, and check the long range performance. Also was wondering what the OAL was in the magazine you have on your trainer rifle. I modified my Savage magazine to get a OAL of 2.436. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am having a hard time getting components, and what little I have, I don’t really want to waste. I want to eventually see what I can get at 1k.

Does rcbs offer honed dies? I'm starting to get into reloading, and I've heard so much great stuff about the rock chucker supreme (both from your 14 press shoot out and talking to some friends who have done precision reloading for a while) but it's hard to argue with a press set up that lead to a 0.001" concentricity measurement

You would have to call them but I doubt it. My advise after 50 years of reloading is, I'll give you is the same I gave my brother when he started reloading. Concentrate on acquiring quality equipment, buy a rifle capable of 1 moa performance and start learning the technique's of handloading to get cartridge performance at 1 moa or under. Quality ammo and consistency is the key, once you reach that sub-moa group then start pushing for that 1/2" 5 shot group or smaller. Costs increase exponentially and the amount of time spent just on your brass can be huge.

Depending on magazine manufacturer, you could probably get away with a 2.262 for your C.o.a.l, and where you need your ogive number to be. So I would say if you run your numbers. Probably a little longer would not hurt you

I was going to try to replicate your load to be honest. I just a bought a Proof 223 trainer/tactical Class barrel. I might just possibly buy about 200 Berger OTM factory boxes, and re use the brass. It’s all about the U 🙌🏼

The world longest Forster sponsored advertisement. Don't get me wrong, Forster makes great products but this was clearly an ad

I’m trying to understand why for some people it takes so many steps to shoot that accurate. I have several rifles (including 3 AR’s I assembled myself using premium components) that have produced groups in the .0’s and .1’s. My hand loading is pretty mild compared to this. I focus on having a good primer, powder, and bullet combination loaded into brass that is the same head stamp. I have never adjusted for neck tension and am limited to loading at mag length. Have all of these steps been verified to actually do anything?
