Yes..Phil was very knowledgable about music especially (underground)music. We all were the same way. We ALL traded Cassettes then CD's also bands would pair up and record a split 7in. When we would go on tour we would always trade with other bands or people we met. We basically built our own network pre-internet. Phil was huge into that. Most bands were back then. It was like how people collected Comic books. If Phil wore your bands shirt to even 1 concert...ur band would sell 10,000 copies that week. And if he wore ur bands shirt in a photo..prolly get u a gold record! Seriously it was crazy how much influence he had on a generation. Pantera made bands like TOOL , RATM,NIN ( great bands of that era) look soft. I remember the Christian groups that would follow them and Marilyn Manson around and boycott their shows, to their hotel rooms.lol Almost every frontman in a metal band tried to look like phil Anselmo. You either looked like you were in the band Korn or Pantera.it was rather silly lookin back Lol Panter was definately MY generations Led Zepplin on steroids! Very Technical musicians, all of them! Thats where they got their power becuause they were razor sharp technically Incredible musicians! Cowboys From Hell was ALWAYS my fav live!!! The David Allan Coe intro to "Were taking over this town!" They were the BEST at what they did!! And also be able to OUTDRINK Metallica!!!#blacktoothgrin If u really wanna get fired up u should watch the Pantera Vulgar videos!

@@TheAdventuresofTNT yeah man, IMO I really think they should get Phil Anselmo on the Joe Rogan Podcast... So much depth and layers to that dude. He was also a writer for a boxing column in a boxing mag. Hes very knowlegable about boxing history. He also has died like 2x..(Flatlined) Then the whole Dimebag Tragedy as well as losing Vince. @@TheAdventuresofTNT this was on their final tour. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIPWZpp8mrt2ns0 But this is a perfect example of 2 things.. 1.How completely BADASS this band was even at the end. 2. Effects of Phils drug abuse. Teenagers went to Pantera shows like it was a "Right of passage." Surviving the Pantera Pits.. (Some made it, some didnt.😂) As far as the family goes...it was pretty selfish of them to just blame Phil. Phil was responsible for distancing himself from the band but even saing in an interview publicly that Dimebag "deserves to be beaten" was not his fault. Ive been in bands at a profesional level. Bandmates have said ALOT worse about each other publicly. Mainly it was Vince Rita and Phil worked things out years ago. Most of annimosity was from Vince. As a fan I get it but Vince should have let it go years back. On the other hand I can still.see where Vince is coming from. Vince and Dime started that band. Phils drug abuse directly effecting the band. Evebtually breaks up. Crazed fan walks up and Shoots amd kills Dime right in front of him. Then is dragged out so gunman cant kill him. The Gunman was looking for Vince while holding Kat(shot) hostage. Im sure Vince had this guilt that he survived but Dime didnt that and the fact he had to witness his brother dying. Vince didnt take to much care of his health. I would hate to have to carry the burden Vince carried on for many years. Now with that being said, Vince should have talked with Phil. And Phil as well has a huge burden. God bless him he still keeps marching on. Phils work on other band DOWN was simply amazing. Im thankful Rita & Phil worked everything out.

The album's cover is a photo of a man being punched in the face and was shot by photographer Brad Guice, who also shot the photo for the Cowboys from Hell cover. The band told their label that they wanted "something vulgar, like a dude getting punched". The first version of the cover that the label brought to the band showed a boxer with a punching glove, but the band did not like it, so the label produced a second version, with the bare fist. According to Vinnie Paul, the man on the cover was paid $10 a punch and was hit in the face 31 times to get the right picture. However, Brad Guice stated that the man, who was named Sean Cross, was never actually hit.

Great song, great reaction, I loved watching you genuinely loving what you heard. Panthers was amazing. I saw them a few times, the last was in NYC at the Hammerstein Ballroom, a small venue that was 95% standing room. Craziest mosh pit ever, high energy show, just incredible. I made it up to the third “row”, within minutes I found myself in the back and don’t remember moving my feet, just carried by the crowd that was a constantly pulsing. I don’t think I stayed in one place for more then a few minutes at a time. It was the tour Dimebag died on, may he RIP. Shows won’t ever be the same.

“Something tribal within” is the perfect explanation of what us Pantera fans went through during a show. I saw them twice in the 90’s and the first time was only my second concert ever. I was a skinny kid, probably 120 lbs. I was scared as hell to get in the crowd, but once that first riff from the song “Walk” started playing something inside me snapped and all of my fear left my body. I walked right up front and stayed there the entire show. The city I grew up in had a lot of what we called Heshens, basically jock stoners with long hair. The pit was full of these guys. But the thing is, when they see little guys they’re pretty careful. If someone falls, there’s always a hand to help you up. I was crowd surfing, I had a blast! I caught Dimebags beer when he threw it into the crowd, I caught one of his guitar picks, my buddy got his brothers drum sticks. It was an incredible night. Second time I saw them, I hurt my back. Not because of a fight, just the shear power of the crowd pushing into me, the guy next to me was elbows out, a common defense pose, anyway the crowd pushed his elbow into my back and I collapsed. People helped me up and I was able to walk it off. Good times!

Suicide note part 2 is the most brutal song they play. Also, "a new level" was my entrance song in pro wrestling. Also also, your reaction to this song is on point. Growing up in the early 90s some of us felt different. Not normal. We didn't have a place. Outside the norm. We didn't have a place in this world. Pantera told us we weren't alone. And some of us are alive today solely because of Pantera.

I love that you already imagined this music the way I try to describe heavy metal to people. That is, being in the pit and how the energies change tempos up and down and what's going on in the pit had those moments. Pantera is a good example of this, but Slayer is an extra special example of this. As they are probably the most intense mosh pits of any band.

Dude. You are hitting it on the mark. You here the first couple beats of any song and you know exactly how much energy is gonna be expected of you. Fucking Hostile was one of them that instantly energizes you. It’s hard to stay in the pit the whole concert cause they don’t have many slow songs and they don’t play many of the ones they do in concert. You either have to have a lot of energy or use really hard drugs to get through a Pantera concert. The other time I saw them though was when they opened for Black Sabbath in Dallas 2000(I think). They had the whole pit filled with seats. The tickets for those seats were expensive as hell for the time($100 or so) and between the floor seats and the wall up to the arena seats was a wall of police officers. Not security guards but actual police, one at every arms reach. And when Pantera took to stage and a few people tried to jump off the wall to the floor the police grabbed them and hauled them out. They were completely set on preventing a pit at that concert. I was disappointed as hell. It was still a great show but it wasn’t the same without the pit. I’m sure they weren’t happy about it either but those old people would have been screwed if people started plowing through to start a pit. Would have been a lot of broken hips that night. Lol. Definitely getting news coverage if that had happened.

My memory: I went to Ozzfest in 1997 in Minneapolis. Pantera was my #1 band at the time and I lost my mind there, but that was like my 2nd or 3rd concert so I was TOTALLY inexperienced in the pits. I can tell you from experience they were BRUTAL! There wasn't fun and games going on. It was full on aggression and madness personified. I had to leave the floor because I got beat to shreds and almost knocked to the ground, and that's NOT where you want to be in a Pantera pit. After I left, I saw some poor sap with a shattered nose walking to get medical attention because of how brutal and unforgiving their crowds were. And, to answer a hypotheses of yours and drop a little knowledge here; They always open with Cowboys From Hell. Fucking Hostile was a mid-set song, so you would have to buckle the hell up and brace for impact!

I was at more than 15 Pantera concerts. When this album came out the first show I saw they opened with Fucking Hostile and the whole floor was a pit. I’ve never seen anything like it. You could not be out of the pit because the whole fucking place exploded on the “1,2,3,4!” Same concert some fucker jumped off the balcony into the pit and I caught his boot on the rightish back side of my neck...Almost knocked me out...I was seeing stars and trying not to go down in the middle of this insane Pantera pit. I managed to stay on my feet and was good a couple of minutes later but my neck didn’t feel right for a couple of days.

Holy shit! I think one my subscribers told me this story about this guy jumping off a balcony. I was like “did he get hurt” he was like “nah he landed on some guy”. Lol that’s wild.

My first time I saw Pantera was in NJ. The security would not let anyone mosh and the Phil stopped the show and told all the fans, " If you don't get up for this next song we will stop the show!" The whole place blew up after that. One of the best shows I have ever seen.

Slayer was also banned from playing pretty much every venue in LA, as well as many other places. Due to the fact that people would tear up the place during concerts. Or just that the mosh pits would get too out of control. Rowdy Slayer fans! I just got tickets for their final show. And they're finally allowed back at the Forum. Somewhere they were banned from for a long time.

According to the band members of Pantera that guy getting punched in the face in that picture got punched in the face like over 100 times or something like that in order for them to get it right I know he got punched in the face well over 50 times I don’t know the exact number but it’s up there

The first time I every saw these guys live I was crowd surfing and got thrown backwards over the rail and I landed on my head. They stitched me up, 24 stitches, and sent me back out to the floor.

They didn’t tend to put it first but usually not long after that. I must have attended at least 15 of their shows from ‘89 to ‘98. That’s the last time I saw them all together. You should check out this Hollywood show from ‘92. The sound isn’t the best, but it’s a great representation of what those early shows were like when they were starting to get big. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJ3Yl5KgnayNhMk

You should also check out "Slaughter", "Walk" is one of their more well known songs, but it's awesome too, "Shedding Skin" is brutal, "Becoming" pits were some of the most vicious I ever experienced

You haven't even gotten to Far Beyond Driven yet, their heaviest album IMO. Slaughtered if fucking brutal! I wasn't there but my brother was at a Pantera show in Dallas at Reunion Arena, the old home of the Dallas Stars NHL team. They put down a wooden floor for the show, and before it was halfway over the fans had torn that shit up and had a bonfire going in the pit. Made the paper the next day, used to have the clipping but lost it in one move or another.

I first heard Pantera in 1995, I've been a proud fan since. Personally I listen to hard-core Punk & these guys upped the anti for me. I have loved this band & their talent for a while now & it's weird seeing other people's first time listening?? I don't find their music something to laugh @ though, like yourself dude. These guys are seriously talented musicians!
