Part 2 of exploring all of the worlds hidden within the code in Super Mario Bros! Some of the worlds tend to repeat things we've already seen, but there are DEFINITELY some bizarre new findings in this one haha. I'm actually collaborating with Kosmic to document every single level of the 248 glitched worlds to a spreadsheet containing descriptions of the levels and whether it can be defeated or not, if it's prone to crash or if every single restart is a different outcome

@@Jeansowaty I am testing on Mesen, a really good NES emulator. Some levels like the cutscene ones featured in this video give a black screen on the emulator so I cannot test those. As for my Discord it's SpartaYoshi#0001, but i have more than 100 people pending my request so it's better if you just join my community to talk, find a link to it somewhere on my channel

I'm documenting all the levels. About 80% of the unplayable levels always spawn at the very top. You need a code to bypass getting stuck at the top in order to play it. Most go on forever cause they don't contain a flagpole with the triggers to pass onto the next level

@@Danstry either you're stuck in an infinite corridor until time runs out or until the game loads an unused broken object that crashes it. Some levels even have different outcomes like E-1 cause it's loading code that gets modified on real-time

@@SpartaYoshi ALXPPPAA lowers the spawn point for these level so you can have control of Mario. (Tested on (W) [!])

15:38 I think HappyLee has a KZbin video talking about glitched worlds, or some specific glitched world he went to, and pointed out that one of the firebars has an unusually large hitbox. Probably the same thing here

(5:07) Strangely, midpoints in these abnormal world levels may not be where you expect. For instance, the midpoint in the traditional world -1 that we all know and "love" is in the first pit, so you fall and die right after spawning there if you don't start swimming immediately. (5:51) For some reason, world 5-1 usually appears right after you get three pipe-entering cutscenes in a row. (6:11) Welp, spawned in a sky bonus room that has no time limit assigned to it, so you die instantly from time up, and even if you didn't die, that would've been the end of the line for this world anyway. (7:21) D'oh, I hate this teaser of a level. You got these castle corridors with a red background, along with a Buzzy below. Looks like it could be something interesting to explore, but you spawn up on the roof in a softlocked state... (7:45) Same deal with this teaser world, and not even that Bullet Bill can free Mario from the softlock. (8:40) Ooh, this one's different, though you need a midair jump/swim code to avoid falling into the pit at the start. (8:48) Welp, this was a short level... or is it? (8:57) If you had grabbed that flagpole, Mario's auto-walk would've taken him into the pit right there, and the death music would start to play, but then every couple seconds, the game would "buzz", play the first few notes of the level clear music, and lurch the screen forward a bit. If you keep waiting for several minutes when it starts doing that, then eventually the level clear music will play out in full, and the screen will scroll to the right smoothly. Several more minutes later, Mario will reappear at the top of the screen. If he then falls into another pit, this will repeat. On the other hand, it might theoretically be possible for Mario to land where he'll enter a castle and trigger the level to end properly. However, more than likely, this is a softlock situation. (9:38) Welp, grabbing the flagpole there caused an instant softlock, due to the wall on the left dislodging Mario's grip on the pole early. (10:17) And, this is what I just described in my paragraph above. (11:25) I have no idea what killed you there. An invisible enemy sprite? (14:06) Ooh, another interesting-looking level... which turns out to be an evil tease, as the game puts you in "cutscene" mode, where you automatically walk to the right slowly. This is a softlock if you bump into any object that's not an enterable horizontal pipe. (14:13) LOL! I didn't know you could get hammered in this "cutscene" mode! (14:17) But, since this is apparently a sky-theme area, and you didn't die from time up, you respawn at the top of the level without losing a life, and since there's a roof, you're instantly softlocked. (14:57) Yeah, money! (15:02) Ooh, this is interesting, hitting a right-moving platform while in "cutscene" mode. (15:38) Weird. Maybe that Fire Bar had the size of a large one, despite looking small. Well, that's unfortunate. I doubt you're getting past that, unless you get to this level big and don't get hammered by Bowser at the start. (15:55) Argh, another teaser world. So frustrating that you can't explore these due to the roof spawn softlock. (16:20) Heh, black box-1 = a black box. Who'd've thunk? (18:38) "I have to go now. My planet needs me." (19:04) Aw, nuts. A game crash. (20:11-20:20) LOL, that fire bar Kaizo trap. But, maybe if you had very little time left when you hit the flagpole... (20:25) Wow, what a convenient midpoint! (20:47-20:54) Success! (22:18) If you didn't have walk-through-walls, this would've been a softlock here. (22:24) And, down you go, since you weren't riding a boost platform this time. (23:15) I've seen that kind of thing myself before. Usually, you can jump on it and it'll turn into a normal Koopa, as if you had removed a Parakoopa's wings. (23:26) Yet another "cutscene" level... (23:46) To infinity, and beyond! (24:08) Welp, this brick world apparently bricked the game.

Unrelated question, but what do you think is the purpose of Kaizo hacks? All I can think of is that it's TAS material.

@@flash4354 I mean... A good Kaizo hack can be really fun to play/speedrun and/or to watch. I know some people who certainly have a passion for this kind of stuff - GrandPooBear, Barb, Dode, LinkdeadX2, LaserBelch, juzcook to name a few. I highly recommend checking them out if you haven't seen their content yet.

You didn't found the Bowser page wrap glitch. When I was a kid I used bootleg consoles and shaking cartridges caused crashes. So does shorting the cartridge pins. This way I ended up discovering these glitch worlds. Later when I had pc and even now I love to play with emulators and ram. E. G. The address 00CE can make you actually play some of the worlds where you spawn on top and the timer isn't started yet

Good job! The SMB Multiverse is really huge, counting a total of like 30 000 + levels (128 x 256), so you still have enough terra incognita to explore ) We also did some digging into the glitched worlds, not too deep though.

In underwater 8-2 and underwater 1-1: the smb1 level format is not a bitmap. It's primitives and entities. The stairs are one primitive that has length parameter. The walls have y parameter. In underwater level mode stairs are rendered as chocolates. Walls are rendered via floor tiles. You can find level editor to play with it to learn the entities in smb1 and the level scenery format.

24:25 because in SMB1, the graphics only allow 3 colors per sprite. it had already used 3 colors so leaving the gap is a clever way to get more colors

As I also mentioned in your previous video, my Camerica Game Genie book had these codes for selecting any world: YSAOPE YEAOZA ?EAPYA The first, second, and last characters of the third line can be changed according to my post in your prior vid to reach any of the 256 worlds. Where did you get your codes from, out of curiosity?

Funny story: long time ago, 9 year old me was playing the 3DS virtual console version of Mario bros and I used a spring, and I got stuck in the air and couldn’t move and had to wait for time to run out. I wonder if anyone can reproduce the same thing again. If so, that would be awesome

yeah! That happens if there are too many sprites on screen when you move over to the spring, it disappears and then you're just stuck on it forever- really bizarre!

24:04 That actually would've been 7-4, and if the world count was 1 to 4 it wouldn't have crashed but it would've required a wall jump anyway.

The effect you're seeing is something like overflow words. You had boundaries over the memory schema for the game. This means that you have certain areas for desired purposes, like layout maps, characters and things like that. Those codes bloke the game code allowing you to access words that it's just chunks of memory used for other purposes than drawing maps.

The reason why the flagpole in the brick world doesn’t end the stage properly was because here’s no castle to walk into, so he just keeps walking until he reaches one, which of course, nether happens.

This reminds me of when I would use GameShark on GBA and to a lesser extent, NES to N64. I would mod Pokemon early gens and many other games to make all sorts of crazy stuff happen, really testing the limits of what you can do by editing the values going from all the range of values like you did. Never seen someone do that to this extent on KZbin, subscribed. This was always really fun for me after beating a game I liked to start hacking into it with GameShark

24:00 It actually makes perfect sense through the eyes of an 8-bit game designer in the 1980's. They had a limited amount of colors to work with on each tile and sprite, but there's always a special "transparent" color that lets the background show through. So, as long as you can always ensure that the background is the intended color and nothing else is going to draw behind the sprite, you can use the transparent color as a bonus color that happens to be the same color as the background. The reason it looks odd here is you've loaded the axe in a level with a blue background which is never intended or possible under normal circumstances.

Now that you mention it, when I was a kid I thought I permanently deleted a piranha plant from existence because it showed up one time in a level and never again. I was a kid so I felt bad about it.

I'm guessing the upwards stairs are different from the others because of the way levels are compressed (maybe there's a map data instruction for inserting certain staircases, and the rest are built manually out of individual blocks?)

a funnier way of covering this is to use the two-liner code YILLPO + VTLLAO, which randomizes the level you go to (most of which are outside of worlds 1-8) whenever you die or complete the stage (excluding castle stages which softlock the game, dying still works, though)

About cloud cutscene level. There is an entity in smb1 that is rendered as small firebar but has collision of big firebar. This one hit you

If you're stuck on a level like the one at 7:57 - use the game genie code SLTOLP. It will move you down by one row. The level is interesting - on all emulators that I know of it turns out to be a black screen.

looks like the game has a hard time processing when the cheepcheep crosses the bullet bill spawn cannon. wonder if it's a constant for all maps. if so, a hammer or shell would probably freeze it too. Not too many objects move in a way that would put them right over a bullet spawn point.

Fun fact: given that there are 256 possible worlds in SMB (only 8 aren't glitched), and 256 levels in each world (only 4 aren't glitches, in each world), then there are 65536 possible levels in Mario. Only 32 of those aren't glitches. That means 99.95% of the levels in Mario are glitch levels. You only play 0.05% of the levels there are...

That is not even close to how it works. Check out the SMB video series by Retro Game Mechanics Explained, he explains how glitch worlds happen, why there are some levels that are just strange versions/mashups of existing worlds, why the actual glitch levels look sorta like regular levels and aren't just a random assortment of tiles, etc...

under water world 1 was quite disturbing to me haha. it it had been flooded for so long that coral had formed around bricks. and maybe corroded stairs?

I'll bet the reason only one side of the axe is colored is because that's the side that falls, and so it goes in front of the bridge/rope texture. The uncolored side always stays in front of the black background since it's on top when the axe falls

Hey I have a question. How are you able to walk above the stage in “bluelava-2”, but not when it spawns you up there in some of the other stages? Also, speaking of those, what are the stages with just massive walls of blocks and other random stuff based on? All the other sorts of levels are based on/copies of other levels, so what ones are those ones copying?

This makes me wonder if there's a way to offset all worlds back by 1 level, so that it would actually be possible to play the toprow levels that happen to be _-1.

These glitch worlds are awesome. But I found them on my NES console by repeatedly pressing reset and start keys. The controller was like the controller for Nintendo 64. But it played NES games

with the levels you can't play cuz your stuck at the top, just use a level editor to take the blocks out and have mario drop.. then you can explore those levels. Also, with no time levels, just use an infinite time code.

there should be a romhack where after world 8 it takes you to world 9 and so on and skips all the unwinnable levels and castles which end the game until the last castle

i only just thought about it but the dots on the hill world made me think; were those dots supposed to maybe represent distant trees on the hill? theyre probably not eyes since hills can have multiple; and why would a hill have two random dots? i feel like theyre probably supposed to be trees
