Running was fine, but her slapping at them is likely what made them start stinging and then they smelled the pheromones, alerting them to "danger" and started stinging anybody. Also if a single bee is hovering around you, blowing gently on them can make them buzz off. They detect our breath and realize we aren't a flower

My lady and I was once working out the yard gardening. I was weed wacking and bumblebees started swarming me. I took the weed wacker and chopping them up. Too many was coming at me and I ran past my lady telling her to run. She said they're not after me. I said RUN!
