I have actual psychiatric-diagnosed OCD. I remember being in middle and high school when OCD was popularized (around the 2010 "rawr xd random" era). Being quirky was the big thing, so people referred to their desire to be organized and orderly as "my OCD acting up." So I imagine the frustration people who actually struggle with autism feel when their disorder is used as a trend. People who fake disorders, I leave a special place in my large intestine for you.

Never once did I think to make those a public statement. 7:46 That fly trend made me think of the time my family told me that when my dad was younger he put a fly in the freezer, tied it to a long piece of hair like a leash, and let it thaw out. If it was made a public statement when you were younger then perhaps it wouldnt be 2023 and we still have people saying things like "autism is caused by vaccines" There is a reason for this becoming more public and its not a bad one. Are some disingenuous, going to far, not properly spreading awareness? sure of course there is, but it doesn't change its outcome. People making it more public has lead to far more people getting properly diagnosed than ever before, its brought it out into the light and more people are learning about it. even with the bad videos people still start talking about it rather than ignoring or hiding it.

The thing that I hate the most about people who fake having things like autism is that, not only do they do it just for attention, validation, and views, but they don’t show the harsh side of having it at all. Every person who fakes having it always portrays it as something that just makes you more happy and ecstatic and something that’s just fun to have. Well, as an autistic person myself, I can safely say that having autism is not all sunshine and rainbows. From a lack of an ability to handle/cope with certain things to a lack of an ability to focus, there are a lot of developmental and social issues that come with autism. People with autism struggle with a lot and I hate that these fakers act like those struggles just don’t exist at all.
@Vincisomething
@Vincisomething Жыл бұрын
People who fake autism also have to have a comorbid illness like, depression, sleep disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, or some other neurological or psychiatric disorder that makes your life difficult. You can't just claim to be autistic and think being quirky and stimming is all there is lol. Especially if you've never been diagnosed until adulthood. No one wants autism or ADHD, the difference is those of us who have it really have no other choice but to own and accept it.

Personally i dont get it because as a diagnosed autistic myself (I hate that i feel the need to say that) i know a lot of autistic people. Not one of these uses autism for clout. It impacts your life massively and i feel that the people who are self diagnosing are taking away from the struggle that undiagnosed people have/had, especially children. Autism can severley affect learning and thats not even considering people who are more low functioning.

True. I realized I had borderline personality disorder a few months before I was officially diagnosed. To be fair, professionals throughout my adult life suggested I may be dealing with BPD, but I didn't want that to be true due to the stigma. I have every single trait, and the classic borderline "origin story". It was obvious to everyone, including my own mother, before I self diagnosed. And I immediately got a therapist afterwards who picked up on it quickly... what I didn't do was create an internet persona to brag about my self diagnosis to feel special and get attention. I instead took the first steps to getting the help I needed.

I stopped using TikTok because I saw a video that said, "How to tell you were abused even if you had great parents". Like people on there are literally just looking for something to be mentally ill about. It's honestly disgusting and cringe to me. It also invalidates people have legit disorders and have survived actual trauma. I see it a lot with BPD. These debilitating symptoms are romantasized. Like weird flex, but okay.

It has a lot to do with the victim mentality that’s like a plague amongst social media users. My sister was like that. My sister lied about my dad being abusive and nearly got us removed from our home. She wanted to have a misery competition with her friends and nearly got us in foster care.

I’m so glad I don’t have tik tok, I’m not a fan of people faking autism. I actually got diagnosed as a child (which was rare for a girl back in the 90’s) growing up was hard. The teasing, the missed information, not getting invited to events and being expected to do so many things at once, I had several breakdowns in my 20’s and looking back I didn’t fully grasp that I would still affect me as an adult. Communication can still be a challenge but life has gotten better. Just wish I knew sooner-I didn’t find out until I was an adult that I was autistic.

Something that a lot of people miss is that a mental disorder is diagnosed not by the presence of symptoms but by the frequency and severity of symptoms. Like, yes everyone is forgetful sometimes, but that doesn't mean everyone has adhd. But, if someone's forgetfulness actively gets in the way of living a happy and normal life, that could be a sign that that person has adhd.

But following people who actually have autism for example has made me realize a lot about myself. Not diagnosed yet but my dr is setting up my assessment after seeing autistic creators and doing my own (excessive at one point) research to show him. I have sympathy for you because I self-diagnosed myself with a couple things years ago and spent a lot of time thinking about it for awhile. I have a psych degree, and it’s very common among people studying these things for the first time to identify with several things in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (published by the American Psychiatric Association-referred to as the bible of mental illness). But this trend is very problematic. One thing to ask yourself with is: Why do you want a diagnosis? Is it for identity purposes, to access health or social services via a diagnosis that health insurance will cover for, or some other reason? If you are actually experiencing mental illness, then you should of course seek a diagnosis so you can access health and/or social services. But, if it’s not for a productive reason, maybe it’s better to seek self-acceptance rather than seek an external diagnostic label to stabilize your identity. Such external solutions tend to be temporary fixes to long-term issues.

@@soberserotonin1850 yes I bounced back and forth with a lot of diagnosis while researching. It took me a couple years of actually researching and narrowing down symptoms before deciding to reach out to my dr about it. It took me years before that too to get my adhd diagnosis. It’s been being researched for a couple years before this trend for sure, just started getting heavier into research with the rise of it, which is why I can kind of understand both sides of this to an extent. I think I want a confirmation by professionals to ease my concerns. It has also opened doors for me with support work, since I find myself being delayed in areas compared to my peers. Wether I am or not, I’m not sure yet because I haven’t had my assessment yet but it’s in the works^^. But I understand your look on it as well for sure

I lived my life having a hard time processing things, like I can hear people say things to me but my brain doesn't process it well so I usually ask people to repeat themselves. I ended up going to special classes in middle school and highschool due to this. Overall I didn't take it seriously because I pretty much lived with it. So recently, I was talking to a co-worker about it because I kept making repeats herself. She mentioned I had "something delay disorder" (I can't remember the name) So I looked it up, "huh! That actually sounds like what I have". So I mentioned it to friends and family.... Their reactions made me feel a type of way. I had friends respond I got that too. Since I didn't care about that much after the day I mentioned it I stopped talking about it because I was just genuinely happy It's a word for it. Current day --- Now everyone is talking about people's self diagnosis... which I never knew it was a thing, so now I regret mentioning the disorder. Especially since it was just something interesting I learned.

As somebody with diagnosed autism and ADHD that was very late diagnosed and miss treated their whole life because of being “weird” or “ not fitting social norms” people that want to fake autism, or ADHD, or any kind of disability, will truly never understand the cultural aspects of our community, and I will say there are things that make autism and adhd “fun” such as the community we have by sharing our own experiences with others, but that’s literally the whole point. OUR OWN experiences which fakers do not have. People always think that disabilities will give them some kind of positive attention, but in fact, it’s actually kind of humiliating when people treat you like you’re a dog and think that you can’t understand simple words just because you have autism. There’s a lot of terrible stereotypes about all disabilities especially neurological.

I had a classmate in college who had Asperger’s syndrome, I was told that it was mild but you can pretty much guess by his mannerisms. Interestingly though, he was the first one who I talked to and became somewhat friends with in their batch (I was from a different batch, but I needed to take some of their classes after taking a year break). He was from a different department but transferred to us because of bullying, I can see how it was hard for him to get along with people and open up. At some point he was able to open up to us since we were a department with like only 15-20 people in it and we were close-knit and tried to get along with each other as much as possible. After a few years with him, we saw how he became more talkative to us and can actually look at us from time to time, it made us happy whenever he was the first one to say hi to us. Disabilities are not trophies to collect, they are challenges that people have to live with. The achievement is not being diagnosed with disabilities, but by being able to live and do the things they want while having one.

As an fyi, diagnosis for women with autism is usually difficult or overlooked due the dsm5 being based on MALE autistics. Women with autism behave differently and often mask heavily. Also, in the US, getting a diagnosis as an adult is difficult. Not only to find a place but if you do, expensive. I’m not saying these tiktoks are right and not absolutely cringe and misleading, but I feel a lot of hate is being thrown at women who recently discover their diagnosis with wanting to get attention.

Hey, I usually agree with you, but your point about autism i disagree with. My psychiatrist told me I couldn’t be autistic because I had too many friends and understood theory of mind. Autism is really misunderstood, and literally to get an assessment, it can cost upwards of $10,000. For a piece of paper, that could disqualify you from jobs, or even being a foster parent. Self-diagnosing is valid, especially when you don’t have the money for diagnosis. I think there are very few people that diagnose themselves with a disorder for fun.
@solarrae
@solarrae 10 ай бұрын
i agree with this. autism already is harder to spot in people that aren’t white males because masking is so much more common. the girl in the pigtails was right about afab ppl in particular being misdiagnosed w other comorbidities like BPD, bipolar, anxiety, depression, etc. albeit presented it in a cringy and sorta condescending way. i’m in a spot personally where i can’t afford the $1000+ diagnostic test for adhd/autism but im pretty sure i have it. self diagnosis can def be valid, but the difference is that some people treat is like finding a new aesthetic. however, most people don’t do that and saying so kinda takes away from ppl that cannot afford a diagnosis

Nah, self diagnosis is rampant right now on social media, every kid in middle school thinks they’re autistic with adhd and OCD because they all want to be special and have a reason to act weird. Self diagnosis is pointless unless you’re going to a doctor because of what you THINK you have. “I think there are very few people who diagnose themselves for fun” is so far from the truth lol

Man I really hated the whole tic & tourettes thing that people were doing cuz to this day I can’t accept I have tics, it’s been 7 years since I got diagnosed and it’s something only my brother and parents know about. It’s something I always avoided and ignored so when I see people doing this it just looks kinda weird tbh. Also a lot of people don’t know but patients with neurological tics get bad episodes when they see other people with tics, if it’s really bad they will literally copy the tic or sound and make it one of their own, I had to be careful watching videos for a short period.

While self diagnoses can be valid, because at some places it takes up to 5 years and lots of money to actually get a propper diagnosis, theres definetly a trend of being " neurospicy" ( TikTokism for ADHD and ASD) .

Remember when people used to be ashamed to have disabilities? They went through trauma for it. It blows my mind how people want to have one now. Like those people must feel so boring that they can’t think of anything else that could make them interesting beyond being disabled. Like they don’t try to learn a new language or instrument: faking a disorder is what they chose? Those people will make it harder for people with real disorders to be taken seriously

The reason behind why newly diagnosed autistics being so proud of their diagnosis, is because for the first time in their life they understand why they've struggled so hard in whatever part of their life it affects, and it's very disappointing to see people who were diagnosed early with it (like oompa) scrutinize and judge them for it, when early diagnosed autistics are less likely to develop mental health issues and get into dangerous situations than late diagnosed autistics (quote me if I am wrong).

The thing I hate about the faking disabilities is the fact that a lot of people will actually believe they might actually have something like ADHD or autism, but not really understand everything about it because of TikTok. For example I share a lot of similarities with autism, but I am not autistic, I actually have Schizoid Personality Disorder and likely schizophrenia. A lot or people just tend to gravitate to autism because it's "quirky", you'd never see someone on TikTok pretend to have Schizoid personality disorder or schizophrenia because then you're just a crazy person. And that's what I hate the most.
