Hi Chris, have been subscribed to run thru your excellent videos. As you said, this one is insane, the underwater footage and also the day you guys had. Live squid??? where, when did you find those? in the dark??, just hit the right time and place, right? Any luck trying frozen??

Thanks Larry. Pretty much right place right time. There have been a few beds that have popped up but it really hasn't stuck around long enough to be my main bait target. Been plenty of it up in NorCal though. I don't use frozen hardly ever, you will get too much bycatch of mackerel and turd rollers and rock fish. Work well for people targeting those species, but it's way too much of a distraction when you're catching every little fish in la jolla.

Chris, I have a question regarding tides, solunar conditions etc. Targeting yellowtail in LJ, are you waiting for these key periods and big tidal swings or do you recommend just going regardless of tidal conditions and putting in time on the water? Ive fished LJ about 7 times, comfortable with the whole game, but trying to fine tune the decisions on what days to fish since I live over an hour away. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!! -Casey

September 18th i was out there at La Jolla. Caught my first yellowtail on a kayak and on an iron. Thanks for the inspiration and knowledge. Do you know how I can purchase a used hobie for a reasonable price thanks?

3 1/2 weeks ago off la Jolla, caught my first yellow tail 17#, 34 inches. 1 ounce chovie hook up bait sport fish. Medium pole, penn battle 2 medium spin reel, 20# leader flourocarbon, 30# braid. Just letting the lure bounce off the bottom while messing with another rod. Very simple ocean kayak, no electronics, no bait tank, just an old man very simple guy, kayak fishing off la jolla for a little over 1 year now about 6 times a month. Enjoy!!

Hey Chris, new subscriber and fan of the channel here. As a noob fisherman, I really enjoy the simple yet thorough way you explain some of your tactics and tackle. I was hoping you could give me some advice. I’m located in SD and looking to get into kayak fishing but I’m on a limited budget and can’t really afford a Hobie right now (maybe one day). I was wondering if you could give me any recommendations on cheap/budget kayaks that would still be able to handle ocean fishing around the La Jolla kelp area like you’re doing. I’m interested in like rockfish, halibut, yellowtail, and throwing lobster/crab hoops. I read that I would only need to go about 1/2 mile offshore for that. About how far are you going offshore for yellowtail and maybe some of those other species I mentioned? You seem really knowledgeable and nice so I figured I’d reach out to see if you could help me out. Thanks and have a nice day!

Hi Max ya thanks for watching. That's easy, there are lots of legit kayaks you can pick up for cheap. The less you can spend on the boat saves you more cash to pick up a PDF, paddle, and some poles. Check out an Ocean Kayak Prowler 13 or 15. Another good one, that I have also used on the channel, is a Malibu Xfactor. richard murphy we are lucky in Southern California. Northern California the peaceful pacific is much more angry and cold. People have issues out there pretty regularly, not to mention the 20 foot white sharks that hang out up there. Thanks for watching!
