Sometimes it’s hard to predict which films are going to be hits, and even the actors and directors don’t always know.
Granted, a lot of filmmakers are just too hard on themselves and don’t realize they’re part of something that will be a massive success, but it’s quite funny that Arnold Schwarzenegger thought The Terminator would be a flop when he was filming it.
Most of them have revised their opinions on the now-famous movies, but there are still a few who remain shocked that they were hits. Let’s take a look at some insanely successful movies that were expected to be flops.
#Movies #Films #Flops
The Terminator | 0:00
The Full Monty | 1:06
It | 1:59
Pirates of the Caribbean | 2:36
Guardians of the Galaxy | 3:24
Taken | 4:06
Animal House | 4:58
Star Wars | 5:48

Personally I think the whole reason why pirates of the caribbean actually worked out so amazingly as it did is because of Johnny Depp's weird take on how a pirate is supposed to be and look like. It took the movie from being a regular pirate movie we've seen a million times to something new and interesting.

Taken is a good lesson for writers: if a simple story isn't compelling (just a father, his daughter, and some bad guys), then complex plots and dazzling special effects won't make the film a success.

In my film class my professor said there really two types of movies that work and will make money, it's either a complex plot complex situations with simple character involved or a really complex character in a simple story. Taken is the later, put a complex guy, a dad with a secretive past, a complex CIA background , in a simple situation a simple plot, save your daughter, and beat everyone up, and it will work, and yes John wick is similar John had a complicated past who was his wife, how many people had he killed, and now he has a simple quest kill those who killed his dog

tbf gotg is not that good of a film in the marvel lore because the high standards marvel already set. but... marvel always being on point when they choose actors and build up almost every character for their universe... they even build quite strong personality character with a very little time such as thanos who only have this one significant movie to show how much important of a villain he is. all we've ever heard about thanos before the movie are just one little sneak peak from the avengers 1 movie and few mentions in the other movie. Back to gotg, gotg 2 are literally one of the best movie from this universe for me, behind civil war and ragnarok... the character they already build makes me really into this movie and gotg 2 significantly increase the quality of the storyline... yondu death are totally heartwrenching that my girl friend crying for so long lol he even say that all the romance movie he ever cried for are nothing compared to this

ROMVS my statement doesn't mean that I consider it to be a good movie ;) I understand its success, but the story was rather bad imo ... I gerenally look at critics because I often can agree (doesn't mean that this isn't always the case, I really disliked Inisde Llewyn Davis), but I try to not just look at one. I like Rotten Tomatoes for the collection of opinions and the short statements it offers (it's a great website if one doesn't just look at the score), but I also look at different reviews and KZbin and so on. But it's good that you found the ones that resonate with your opinions and help you navigate through the sea of movies that we get.

Arnold was also reluctant to act in the film, because he had to play the bad guy, which usually would end up being a typecasting dead end for actor's career. He wanted to play the Kyle Reese role if I recall correctly. So James Cameron had to do some convincing. He also hated the "'I'll be back" scene, because he thought it was goofy, and he didn't like how it sounded preferring "I will be back." instead. Glad he listened.
@DaiBenduMonk
@DaiBenduMonk 5 жыл бұрын
Christopher McDonald I’m pretty sure that’s what he said in his Total Recall book. He didn’t want to get type casted as the bad guy going in the future. Arnold said he wanted to be a movie star, and playing a bad usually was a dead end. So he was really cautious because of this. He was getting offered to play the muscle, the bad guy, but he wanted main, lead character roles, or at least portray the good guy. Terminator on paper was opposite to that. But funny thing what happened was that he started giving Cameron tips. Arnold was in the military and his weightlifting career, aspirations to achieve success by any means necessary made himself into a bit of a machine, so he could really empathize with this robot character. How everything should be done automatic. Like assembling and de-assembling a gun, I think he gave an example. How it’s a killing machine. So I think that part turned him over, he thought he could do a really good job playing that. There was obviously more to this but I can’t remember it all. I’ve read the book some years ago, but that’s what I remember him saying.

I think part of the reason Star Wars was so big is that most folks never paid any attention to 2001 ASO, or had even seen the movie, as it had not really been a Blockbuster. The Special Effects in Star Wars were not a big leap, and in fact in many ways were actually worse. Star Wars awed the audience with pretty good SEs, but the story was incredible and easy to understand. Magic, but the lack of audience respect/perspective for previous movies was part of the magic too.

He told Jimmy Kimmel that when he was first starting out in his career as an actor that he was offered to do some crappy movie, Scorpion he tricked Stallone into doing the movie telling him it was a great movie but he was too busy at the time. Stallon ending up doing the movie but it didn't do well.

I remember in a post-Avengers world, everyone is having that Marvel fever. I was at a gathering with my friends and family and the trailer for 'Guardians of the Galaxy' popped up on the telly. My cousins and friends kinda cheered but I was unsatisfied and I remarked that it would be a mistake -- I was certain it would be Marvel's first flop. Now, it's safe to say that both of theirs films are my favorite in the MCU. Also, it wasn't Star-Lord's fault.

My opinions on these movies: Terminator: I love this movie, and I'm kinda surprised that both Schwarzenegger and his agent thought it would flop. Well, Schwarzenegger still gave a terrifying performance,and being able to put in effort when you don't care about your work is a talent. The Full Monty: I haven't seen the entirety of this movie, but what I have seen made it look like a good movie. It: since Skarsgård was so worried about something going wrong I'm glad this movie was a success. Pirates of the Caribbean: I've heard that Michael Eisner didn't believe in this movie, and I don't care 'cause he didn't always have the best judgement during his career. I am however kinda surprised that some cast members didn't believe it'd be good. Again, like with Terminator, you can't tell from their performances. Guardians of the Galaxy: I can understand the worry here. There was a sense that this movie would just be TOO weird to work. However, while I understand the worry, I myself wasn't worried. As long as everyone involved committed to it, and went all out I thought it was going to work. And they did. And it did. Taken: Yes it's simple. Sometimes simple works. Sometimes simple is what people want. Animal House: Sutherland at least tried here. I can not say the same thing about another movie he starred in but didn't really care about: Buffy the Vampire Slayer(no, not the TV series everyone knows. The movie that most people who know it try to forget). Star Wars: No one expected this movie to EXPLODE the way it did, nor that it would spawn a franchise this effin' huge

Jeff Daniels thought Speed was a crummy, run of the mill action film that wouldn't do anything at the box office. Instead, it became a smash hit. I've heard interviews from a lot of actors who say they often have no clue if a film will be good or bad when released because so much of it is made in the edit. Star Wars with bad editing and cheesy 70s effects and sounds would have been awful. Instead, it's the classic it became. The prequels, with better edting, would be so much better.
