I think it’s safe to say that Marvel has cornered the market on superhero flashbacks, although it helps immensely that most of the people they’ve de-aged have had long film careers so there is plenty of archival material to pull from. I guess that’s why they couldn’t get Henry Cavill’s moustache of...?

Tattoos take a very long time to cover with make up and the results are often mixed. More often than not you can still see the tattoos under the make up. Then take into account that make up runs and fades while you have it on, blending skin tones over random shades of ink is incredibly tricky, and while you have your extremely over paid actors on set, you need them filming scenes, not sat in a make up chair receiving endless touch ups over something you'll still see in the end result anyway. It's far easier to film the scene as is, and then pay somebody to take their time and painstakingly remove the tattoo over months.

To be fair, I guess some CGI does suck in the case of those that are meant to be seen. Comparing for example AVATAR and TRANSFORMERS, then the quality would not be based on being invisible but instead being believable, i.e. to blend in with the real world and not enter "uncanny valley." Also of course a different criteria again for Animated Movies such as those by Pixar. But yeah in general CGI in live action movies were meant to be invisible. Sometimes tho it really is meant to be seen and be awesome.

The Carrie Fisher digital face matting work is excellent if eery considering they will do more of this in future Star Wars films since she passed away. The one from X-Men was good for most of it, but there were part where it looked faked. At the matter of fact, the same issues that made X-Men, young Tony, Leya/Luke is the same thing for all of them. There's a couple of times on here where the effects are referred to as Special Effects. Special Effects deal with on set effects done captured on camera mostly focused with the use of on set pyrotechnics. Visual Effects is what is done in post production with the use of computers or other shots blending techniques, this can include blending multiple on camera lighting passes as it was done back in the day during the first Star Wars and Back to the Future.

The tape used for Paul Reubens; character Peewee Herman, were fairly common in early days of Hollywood. Actress Jeanne Cooper, who had a full career before she ever took on the role of Katherine Chancellor on the Young and the Restless, used tape with strings attached to create the same line-minimizing effects of a face lift. The producers actually shot the actress' own real life face lift surgery in the series, and in part of the run-up to the character's surgery, they showed her removing the tape and strings on camera. What an incredible difference!

Time is money on movie sets. Every minute. We cover up background actors tattoos but if you're talking about a big movie star , the amount of time having them in the chair AND on set isn't worth it. People getting paid to cover up digitally get paid less than people in front of the camera.

That's a good question. I've heard some actresses actually can't because already have laser or they've been waxed so much that the hair doesn't come back or it comes back funny. But even then there are little wigs for that. I think they're called "merkins". I think that would still be cheaper than digital hairs.😄

You really should. We who work in the vfx industry never get a chance to shine because each piece of imagery is such a collaborative effort that we can't really take credit just for ourselves. We also spend most of time in front of our screen and tools and are happy to just deliver something amazing at the end of th deadline.

Curtis Joseph That would be fair enough in pretty much every other case, but for that fact that choosing to shave “down there” is an extremely personal and individual thing, that doesn’t actually really affect anyone and shouldn’t be scrutinised - even if one is acting in such an explicit film.

I understand the Glee use of CGI. Pimples change in severity and can go away quickly. Just for continuity, it would be wise to just remove them. Imagine it takes days to shoot an episode, and they aren't shot in order. Also consider any re-shoots of scenes and you can see the impact a pimple can have.

And then there's the easy approach to rejuvenating an actor. In the 2009 vampire movie "Suck", there's a flashback that shows how Malcolm McDowell's character "Eddie Van Helsing" first became a vampire hunter. They simply cut in footage from his 1973 picture "Oh Lucky Man".

1. Dakota Johnson in 50 shades when she was naked. CGI had to give her bushes. And the guy had a butt double. 2. Nicholas Cage in ghost rider has a ghost rider tattoo so they had to hide it. They say his abs were cgi but Eva Mendez says they were real. 3 Christian narit in games of thrones. His penis was fake it was a prosthetic penis. Airbrushing out a thong he had to wear. Paul Rubens (peewee Hermin) cgi was used with makeup and tape was used to de age the actor. 4. The cast of Glee, they all had acne covered on their faces cause they ugly. Jk 5. Jessica alba on being naked in 2010 “machete” she wasn’t actually nude they used cgi underwear. 6. About homeland, cover Danes baby bump. Not important ... 7. Captain America Steve Rogers, obviously his body was cgi for the first movie. 8.. this list is too long I’m done
