I haven't seen GEM yet and probably never will, but I have seen the collections at the old Egyptian Museum in Cairo and I gotta say, I liked the cluttered immediacy of it, the ability to walk right up to huge statues and stand at their feet and even touch them. Even the King Tut tomb artifacts' exhibit featured objects like the chariot and random beautiful pieces of furniture from the tomb were lined up in the hallway because of lack of room, usually with nothing between you and the treasures.. My first impression of GEM from the videos I've seen is that it's spent a LOT of time and effort showcasing the architecture of the place but made the archeological treasures imposing and far away.

Concerning Egypt, I will now speak at length, because nowhere are there to be seen so many wonders, nor in the whole world besides are there to be seen so many works, of greatness defying description (Herodotus of Halicarnassus, book 2, 35) L'Egypte m'a paru le plus beau pays de la terre. J'aime jusqu'au désert qui la borde, et qui ouvre à l'imagination les champs de l'immensité (Chateaubriand, Itinéraire de Paris à Jerusalem) Vivant Denon, the founder of the Musée du Louvre, who accompanied the army of Bonaparte in Egypt, describes the arrival of the French army in Thebes :"At the sight of its scattered ruins, the army stood, and in a sudden impulse, grounded its hands" . So majestueux were the ruins !

I would love to go see this but just getting to the museum without getting robbed by crooks and/or corrupt Gov. officials seems impossible..

Great achievement, really! One less enthusiastic comment, though... Sorry that the kids will have access only in Arabic in English through their dedicated audio-guides. I would have expect them to be able to hear everything in their mother tongues, including the various Native American idioms, Kurdish, Syriak, Aramean, Nubian languages, etc, etc... Including, why not, some langyages that are bearly extinct...That is what, in my view, should be expected of one of the greatest civilizations humanity came up with!
