Get your track gear! | shop.fullboost.com.au A popular sports car of the early nineties, the Nissan Z32 300ZX is becoming a JDM modern classic. Alex has owned this example for over 20 years and in more recent times has replaced the VG30 V6 engine with some newer tech in the way of a GT-R sourced VR38 twin turbo backed by a sequential gearbox. We caught up with Alex at Chequered Tuning where the car was being given a quick check over.

@@HoweDoYouDo1999 Ahh, of coarse! I know all about brother. Been a qualified mechanic for 19 years now. I also used to own an LJ with a Holden based 383 stroker. It was a lot of work getting the motor in using factory mounts so it sat nice n low in the bay. I would have to change the front 2 plugs on each bank from above like normal. The rear 2 plugs on each bank had to be done from underneath while the car was up on the hoist!!! The front crossmember had to be notched in the center for the sump. Then when i fitted a much larger sump, the corners where it was notched i had to cut triangular shapes out, heat up the steal and fold over those corners for clearence mln weld them up. But the even the corners of the larger boxed section of the sump i cut triangular shapes out (like little pyramids) n swapped them around to be inside out corners!!! 😅😅😅 Still then the left hand crossmember outrigger had to have a section cut out, heated up, folded over n welded up to make clearence for the starter motor. Man, that engine came in and out that many times to get it right. The previous owner had fitted a 253 with the dodgiest modified stock mounts where large washers were welded on to lift up the engine about an inch. These washers were where the large through bolt went through to bolt the mounts to the crossmember, if you know what i mean- being in the trade i was not going to put it back together with those cobbled together POS mounts with a real motor making some actual power... 😰

I own z32 for few years. Only thing I can say that might be a nightmare is having to take off the radiator almost every single time I have to do anything other than spark plugs, fluids(etc). The long nose of the z32 is a more a nightmare tbh, backbreaking. It’s an extra 20(ish)mins and a jug of coolant, not that bad, tbh.

A 370z trans bolts right up and can handle the power. Company called Dailey engineering in Temecula California makes a dry sump Conversion that gets rid of The awd oil pan and takes a full 6” off the bottom of the motor solving the hood clearance issue. Problem solved And your welcome! Your biggest issue would be plumbing the dry sump setup. But you can always fab up an oil tank to go where the battery was and move battery to the rear.
@fullboost5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. Long term plan is to step the engine right up hence the gearbox upgrade 👍 The battery has already been moved.
@badxtc5 жыл бұрын
i have modded the original sump and took out about 2 inch already , the dry sup option was not available back when i built this car ( about 4+ years ago now ) there was 1 system but way to expensive and was not complete , the 370 box was not going to cut it for the end result of this car
@kfneely15 жыл бұрын
alex h yes I know it was not available when you built it. However you spoke of going through it and taking it back apart for more hp soon. How much hp are you shooting for? We have put down over 800 hp on the 370 box no problem at all. This is in a drift car that sees a ton of abuse. I know you ha e the sequential box already so that is a moot point. However on the dry sump side of things you can get a ton more clearance if you go with the Dailey engineering kit. If you type “wtf 86” in the search you will see there is a guy in AU that uses the kit as well. Hood closes perfectly with no modification to it at all. I believe the same can be accomplished in a z32 by lowering the engine another 6”. Like I said I’m just speaking of when you take apart the car again. You feel me? Nice build. I want to put this in my z but vr38’s are running about 10 to 15k every time I look them up. I did get lucky and find one for 5500 but it’s currently going into another project.

As far as the states go... 800+ is typically built bottom and top. I am unaware of a stock VG doing 1khp. There is a few NA-Ts doing some stupid numbers though, but it's still not 1k. VG can definitely put some power down, but I guess its up for discussion if spending 25k on a motor or spending 20k to build one is better.
@badxtc5 жыл бұрын
the VG is a great engine but at the end of the day a typical 700whp 800 whp zed will be at it limit give or take and , this is stock and am over 680 whp with massive torque by 3500rpm , and the end result wll be next level there would be no way i can get what i want with a vg, its simple 1000hp vg at its limit or 1000hp vr that can push way more ( P.S im not a dyno numbers guy at all people will see this in the coming years i am ONLY about real performance )
@FakeJeep5 жыл бұрын
True, and from my perspective I guess it's just how much you're wanting to go for. The VG at 1k~ is going to be near the most it can do, while the VR has room to stretch its legs. Though I would say the Z32 even with a built trans is going to be near the chassis limits... Half shafts start to break around 600rwp with slicks. That said I am very interested in his build.

Yuck, who built that bonnet?
@badxtc5 жыл бұрын
me at home , was only to pass engineering for full road use not for looks the bonnet has about 4mm clearance , no room to move, tall engine .

@@badxtc hey mate did you guys at any point think of dropping the subframe? Also with your differential problem would you maybe suggest upgrading to a 1.5LSD will that help strengthen the diff and help with the load?
@badxtc5 жыл бұрын
@@tysonmaggio6345 hey mate , no not really i dont want to drop the subframe , i can go down a bit more on the engine but not much , i think most of the uglyness is in the bonnet itself , i rushed it to get engineered and roadworthy and it worked i will make another bonnet and it will hide/look much much better then this one , as far as the diff goes i dont think the r230 of the r200 will work for the ens result i think a quickchange diff is what i need time will tell , i do have an r200 gtr r32 diff here and NA cradle , all ready to go in for now till i sort out what im doing

Thumbs down. You completely ruined this car with that engine swap and hideous hood/interior.
