these old " iron veterans " were pioneering a new and developing coal industry in central queensland in australia 40 years ago. my late dad operated the D9G and later the D9H during his career in the coal industry. i followed him into the industry and operated the differential steer D8N and D9L, late i would operate the newer D9R and D9T joystick control machines. i would have loved to have operated these old faithful dozers though. love your videos.

Heres another example of how tough these tractors are. Our 9H, its been rebuilt quite a few times but still to this day she runs like a champ. Its funny because we just traded in our D9T because it had more downtime with computer issues then our D9H did with basic repairs.

my father has 2 d9h's a d10n and a cat d11r.the d9s are awesome cant beetem, the d11 is crazy big of course you know that. he also has 5 pay hauler 250's or 350's(cant remember wich)and a volvo 480d excavator. all amazing equipment. thx for the memories,and awesome video.

@tarheellax92 I'll have to get in with you on that. The old D9's are pretty rough. One company here purchased a new Komatsu WA800 and had so much electronic issues and downtime with it that within a couple years, got rid of it for a 992C.

Question- If the dozer has a "decellorator", does it also act as a clutch when changing from forward- reverse? Also, why 2 brake pedals if they are not for steering like the older models? Hope my questions made sense.... Outstanding vids, appreciate youre knowledge of these old machines. Looking forward to more.

@PAmining Yeah thats great. Somewhere buried in my channel I have a D9G engine I have an engine getting rebuilt for one of these dozers. Its a ways back in there though from last summer. Big engine!

Just watched the documentary on the D9H, but I still have a short question. You said the two levers in front of the operator are for the two tracks, right? In the video the operator is frequently using only one of the two levers - why? What for are those levers? Thanks for the explanation!

@Giuste86 Those are the steering clutches, that's how you steer the tractor. The more you pull on one of those hand levers, the more the dozer will turn in that direction. If you pull the hand lever back all the way (basically until you can't pull no more) then it will engage the track brake and clutch and freeze the track up so the dozer can make a tight turn. Track brake pedals are also on the floor.

@Giuste86 He may be in a long turn. Watch him backup and use the opposite steering lever to shift over. Also, sometimes the clutches are a little out of adjustment and you have to compensate manually to go straight. Or as one person suggested the blade may have more load on one side than the other and you have to steer into the loaded side.

I just got a new set of boots on my 10T today, now it pushes again, all our stuff is new except for our backup breakdown machines which are old and rusty but they have no shortage of guys willing to climb on. But in saying there old they are nowhere near as old as that D9, our spare dozer is a D10N. Wheel dozer 854G, grader 160G, wheel loader 992G, a lot of people wouldn't consider them old but for a mine site they are

@heartland96a I think this one's a 78', rebuilt. You still see D9G's and D9H's operating today, what does that tell you...they're good tough tractors.

no. it just brings the rpms down. it works opposite the way it would in a car. it has no clutching effect. you hit the decelerator when changing gears. it saves on transmission. Some cowboys don't decelerate and its like taking your car and doing a neutral drop with the rpms at redline

@Giuste86 If he has more material on one side of the blade than the other, or is cutting more on one side, he will have to pull the opposite clutch more to keep it straight because the drag on the one side wants to turn the machine.

Those are for the steering clutches, that's how you steer the tractor.
