Thanks for sharing the tour, very interesting! Those wood closets were cedar closets & very popular decades ago. Cedar removes moisture from the air, so in humid climates, it acts as a natural dehumidifier keeping clothes from developing mildew. The house definitely had quarters for its staff, often you see small staircases for help too. That was a bidet. Bidets were invented back in 1600's. Sad to see it get demo'd.
@georgannschultz34063 жыл бұрын
Cedar is an effective moth repellent. Wools and other natural fibers would be cleaned, brushed and stored in cedar closets during the summer to make room for summer clothing. Did you notice the closets are not as large as in new homes? People did not consume and discard clothing like they do now. It would be stored seasonally (thus the massive cedar closet) and passed down through the children, or servant's children or donated to charity shops.

Truly amazing! I have to throw my 2 cents in here about the second house. Yes, it may have been for the household staff, but a lot of people of "means" back then would plan the house so that as their children grew and married, they could stay together and still have their privacy. There is an incredible Colonial home like that here in the heart of Lancaster City PA. The Father built 2 huge homes that connect for his daughter and her new family to live.

5:02 Wow 😯 did not expect the wallpaper to be that beautiful… I love it so much. You preserve the beauty of things like that forever by doing what you do. Whenever you show certain detail in tile, floors or walls I screenshot it for when I design my dream home… One that stands out is the custom tile design in the bathroom that had floor to ceiling black tile. Each bathroom had floor to ceiling marble and it was a whole lux mood. Now someone, somewhere can immerse themselves in beauty that may have potentially been lost to time to demolition… You are a historian… proud of you. 💗

The video wasn't long enough (could have spent at least an hour there filming)! The toilet and sink by the front door is called a "powder room" for guests and visitors (powder rooms are bathrooms without a bathtub or/and a shower). The smaller kitchen was for the family and the bigger one was industrial which was used for parties with many guests. The second floor with a door adjacent to another bed room was a nursery (note the toy train wallpaper) as the mother (or servant) could get into that room without going through the hallway. Many Victorian women had their own bedrooms separate from their husbands. The room on the second floor with the storage cabinets could also have been the dressing room (a room to dry off after bathing and have the clothes ready, especially if it had a laundry chute door somewhere in it). The "other house" was there servants quarters with their own bathroom and kitchen. Very rich people built this house!

I’m guessing with all the keys, it was once a B&B. Someone needs to buy it and turn it back into a B&B. Looks like the foundation might need to be fixed but it doesn’t seem to be too bad. I would turn it into a B&B/wedding venue. I would definitely contact the historical preservation society with this house being as old as it is. The construction company are idiots for wanting to tear it down.

Yes definitely. It could have been a B&B. I would definitely reach out to your county and see if there’s someone who you can contact. It pleases me so much to hear your live and respect for the homes you explore...especially the wallpapers...I have hung wallpaper for about 45 years and seeing that wallpaper in this home gave me chills! Please keep showing the closeups of the wallpaper! Oh, large old homes with the radiator heat, often had connecting rooms like in this house, I didn't see transoms above the doors though. This was done to facilitate air flow (circulation) in the summer to attempt to cool the house down. I lived in a home built in 1840 and they do present quite a challenge with HVAC and repairs! They had 8 children and in the playroom my uncle built 8 unique pull down desks into the wall with their names on each one. It was sold 10 years ago and the new family took it down to the foundation and rebuilt a gaudy, horrible house in its place. Broke our hearts, that it wasn’t sold to someone that treasured it the way our family did.
