We are in the process of buying a Colonial home and it’s so beautiful. I refuse to buy a new build, same with my partner. He loves the old architect just as much as me, there’s just so much charm and character in old homes.

it really is; bankers and financiers aren't concerned with beauty though, they just need to make a new development with ugly dwellings. they'll trot out some twaddle about 'money and upkeep and repair too expensive' and people will repeat their garbage explanations while our choices more and more become soulless squares built with angles of sorrow.

My grandmother would have been 5 years old when this house was built . It is amazingly in good shape for it's age . I know if you start looking for weakness in places you would find it . The wallpapers blow my mind. Imagine how many tiny homes could be built with the lumber , windows ,doors , bathroom fixtures and the amazing wood from the floors.

The separate section "Whole other house" section, I believe would have been for the servants. My brother has a house (over 100 years old) with a separate section like that. The smaller staircase would have been used by the servants to get to the dining /kitchen area.

Thanks for sharing the tour, very interesting! Those wood closets were cedar closets & very popular decades ago. Cedar removes moisture from the air, so in humid climates, it acts as a natural dehumidifier keeping clothes from developing mildew. The house definitely had quarters for its staff, often you see small staircases for help too. That was a bidet. Bidets were invented back in 1600's. Sad to see it get demo'd.

Cedar is an effective moth repellent. Wools and other natural fibers would be cleaned, brushed and stored in cedar closets during the summer to make room for summer clothing. Did you notice the closets are not as large as in new homes? People did not consume and discard clothing like they do now. It would be stored seasonally (thus the massive cedar closet) and passed down through the children, or servant's children or donated to charity shops.

What a stunning home. I appreciate the delicate design of the wallpaper; someone was intentional with that selection as it's easy on the eye. One closet/storage room on third floor, appeared to be a cedar closet. With a home of this magnatude I'm sure there were a lot of people there, even at different times. Proper bedding would always include plenty of quilts and aphgans and winter fur coats also kept stored safely from insects and mice, lol. Just a quick look is all you have but it's what struck me as you openef the door.

Truly amazing! I have to throw my 2 cents in here about the second house. Yes, it may have been for the household staff, but a lot of people of "means" back then would plan the house so that as their children grew and married, they could stay together and still have their privacy. There is an incredible Colonial home like that here in the heart of Lancaster City PA. The Father built 2 huge homes that connect for his daughter and her new family to live.

If the do demolish this house I hope they are saving more than that door with the green tape on it. The windows, the built in cabinets, the doors, the molding, the mantles of the fireplaces, the door knobs, hinges, there's so much that can be reused in other old homes that people are restoring.

5:02 Wow 😯 did not expect the wallpaper to be that beautiful… I love it so much. You preserve the beauty of things like that forever by doing what you do. Whenever you show certain detail in tile, floors or walls I screenshot it for when I design my dream home… One that stands out is the custom tile design in the bathroom that had floor to ceiling black tile. Each bathroom had floor to ceiling marble and it was a whole lux mood. Now someone, somewhere can immerse themselves in beauty that may have potentially been lost to time to demolition… You are a historian… proud of you. 💗

I’m guessing with all the keys, it was once a B&B. Someone needs to buy it and turn it back into a B&B. Looks like the foundation might need to be fixed but it doesn’t seem to be too bad. I would turn it into a B&B/wedding venue. I would definitely contact the historical preservation society with this house being as old as it is. The construction company are idiots for wanting to tear it down.

Yes definitely. It could have been a B&B. I would definitely reach out to your county and see if there’s someone who you can contact. Here in Canada often houses will be deemed as a heritage house and they cannot be demolished. However they can be turned into something else. There is a house here for sale in my town that I eventually want to purchase to turn into a spa.

The video wasn't long enough (could have spent at least an hour there filming)! The toilet and sink by the front door is called a "powder room" for guests and visitors (powder rooms are bathrooms without a bathtub or/and a shower). The smaller kitchen was for the family and the bigger one was industrial which was used for parties with many guests. The second floor with a door adjacent to another bed room was a nursery (note the toy train wallpaper) as the mother (or servant) could get into that room without going through the hallway. Many Victorian women had their own bedrooms separate from their husbands. The room on the second floor with the storage cabinets could also have been the dressing room (a room to dry off after bathing and have the clothes ready, especially if it had a laundry chute door somewhere in it). The "other house" was there servants quarters with their own bathroom and kitchen. Very rich people built this house!

This reminds me of my Aunts house in NJ that my Uncle built. It was not as big as this, but it was a center hall colonial with lots of rooms and lots of character. They had 8 children and in the playroom my uncle built 8 unique pull down desks into the wall with their names on each one. It was sold 10 years ago and the new family took it down to the foundation and rebuilt a gaudy, horrible house in its place. Broke our hearts, that it wasn’t sold to someone that treasured it the way our family did.

This is an amazing house. I saw it a while back and I was trying to find somebody to come in and show it completely. The one that I watched it through skipped so much and it made me so upset. I’m glad you did too at the house so I can see it. I saw the rooms I didn’t get to see, thank you so much because this is my favorite

I am so glad you did more background on this one. Your videos are awsome- but usually lacking backstory.

Love this house and thankyou for your amazing videos! You may want to consider having an old gal or guy with you some day to help yranslate old houses! ;). But, having said that, I truly enjoy hearing the wonder in your voice on these videos, when you discover puzzling things that oldsters like myself used in everyday life or that our grandparents used! It pleases me so much to hear your live and respect for the homes you explore...especially the wallpapers...I have hung wallpaper for about 45 years and seeing that wallpaper in this home gave me chills! Please keep showing the closeups of the wallpaper! Oh, large old homes with the radiator heat, often had connecting rooms like in this house, I didn't see transoms above the doors though. This was done to facilitate air flow (circulation) in the summer to attempt to cool the house down. I lived in a home built in 1840 and they do present quite a challenge with HVAC and repairs! Thankyou again. Really enjoying your videos...big fan here!

That house is in amazing condition. To destroy it is a sin. Amazed at how well-kept and clean the entire house is.

Watch the movie The Money Pit. Likely there is so much wrong with it, there could be mold, rotting wood, bad pipes, heating/cooling issues, it would honestly take millions to fix these. A lot of it isn't up to code. I think millionaires today want everything modern sadly.

Love this place. So great that no one got in and trashed the place. I really enjoy the quality of your videos and you have the perfect voice when you're giving us the tour. Only thing that bothered me was the banging around and voice too loud coming from the background. YOU were perfect, background person was unprofessional. Still loved the video and will keep watching.
