Yeah, the collapsed filter is a FRAM, of course. I stopped using FRAM filters a long time ago because the media inside of them breaks down prematurely.

You can't blame the filter for the sludge. Probably the car was poorly maintained, then sold; the new owner is changing the oil and all the built-up sludge came loose. Any filter would have collapsed under that kind of load.

@conradsigona While I don't disagree here, FRAM filters are known for premature media breakdown.
