Inside Arsenal E/T: The 2023/24 season awards special - Best player, best goal, best game and more

Hello everyone and welcome to this week's episode of Inside Arsenal extra-time where I'm joined once again by James Benge of CBS Sports.
In this week's show we wrap up the season and hand out our end of season awards, discussing the highs and lows of another excellent Arsenal campaign.

I think my moment o f the season is when Odegaard gave the ball to Havertz for the penalty at Bournemouth. If not the moment, certainly the most significant.

x2 random funny moments: a) Saliba going shoulder to shoulder with Haaland in the first half at the Emirates. b) Ben White's nutmeg on Doku close to the full time whistle in the win over City.

I'd have to give goal of the season to Eddie to complete his hattrick. I feel too many people have forgotten the goal and how shocked we were when he took the shot from that far out and scored that banger.

Rice seems to play as an 8 and a 6 at the same time. He gets back so often to make crucial tackles and interceptions he's like a 6, but the next minute he's up the other end in the box being an 8. Half price for sure!

Disappointment of the season/Arteta era is that we have never really had Atletico Madrid version of Thomas Partey. Amazing player.

Timber has the quality to slot in anywhere in that back line. Just needs minutes with the team to get his rhythm back!

I've also been thinking about how Arsenal feel like pre title Bulls losing to pistons etc. I wonder who our Jordan will be (come back to club early) and make everyone grind extra hard and get mean ready to snatch the crown the next time.

I'd give goal of the season to Rice. But, for the goal against Chelsea. I know the keeper had vacated the goal but it still took amazing technique to pull it off.

Hey Chaps! The way I look at it is that City won the PL based on the result of just one match. If we had won one of the games we drew, we would have won the PL on GD, and if City had drawn one of the games they won, we would have won the PL on GD. That is how close it really was.

Arteta and the entire team have done great but Odegaard,Saliba,Rice and Saka are the standouts its got to be Rice for me outstanding season so consistant.

I don’t know Arsenal can play any better this season realistically. They put themselves in perfect position to win against a superior team than them. So I would say this season is 100/100 for me. I would not change anything major next season besides adding couple superstar players to bring our talent level closer to City. The reason for that are: 1. From 1-16, City has more talent 2. Pep is still better than Arteta 3. Injury still worse than City: Jesus, Martinelli, Timber, Saka, Partey. They are all key players for us. 4. Rice, Raya, Saliba, Gabriel, have carried this team and that’s all you can go this records. I think 85 would be a fair point for as many injuries we had. 5. We also competed in Champions league till end of April giving our thin line up compare to City. We basically are using 8 regulars plus 3 positions (Trossard, Jorginho, Kiwior) . That’s too much burden on those 8 players. 6. We did not get unlucky on officiating. I would say an even season that we had some lucky break also with some unlucky ones.

I love how you both enjoy football so differently. Its a great dynamic. James acts like a connoisseur of the little romantic bits about Football but Charles is just a no nonsense 4 4 fakin 2 man (not an insult haha). The bit about Ben Whites goal in this pod is the best example of this haha

Disappointment of the season: Timber doing his ACL in the first match. 100%. He looked SO good in preseason and Community Shield... What could have been... (I got to see him up close at ARS vs. BAR in Los Angeles - it was a "Damn, this guy is a BALLER." moment.)

Rice is young energetic 6 who covers a lot of ground 😂 Surely, Brazilian, Portuguese and Spaniard we linked with know more about playing in possession and with the ball than good old Irish work horse. I watched all 90s this season, I know he is brilliant human being but let’s stay on the earth, how many times he was out of his limit of ideas and understanding of time and space.

Charles I love this show watch it every video I wonder why no one has talked about how bad raya is at shot stopping, he got the golden glove award and will probably be in the team of the season for it but it’s not down to him, if you actually break it down you will see it’s about our defence and rice. Against West Ham we lost 2-0 and they had 3 shots on target, against villa we lost 2-0 and had 2 shots on target and even games we won the other teams score with their only shot on target so that is such a poor shot save conversion rate that no one’s taking about We had 30 shots and 10 on target against West Ham yet we lost 2-0 I truely believe if we had a shot stopper we would of won this league by some margin especially with the defence we have

It´s the hope that kills you Charles, or at least, that hits you right on the stomach. Was a wonderful year despite falling short. And ultimately it was because of the points we lost during the first falf of the season. But man, that run in the second half was just amazing. I loved Arteta´s speech and how he ended with "AND WE ARE GOING TO GET IT". I honestly believe him. We go again next season. And to win it ALL.

⚽ Why Connor Gallagher should be Arsenal's midfield signing this summer: -One of five midfielders in the England squad for the euros. -Played three different positions this season: 21 at AM, 18 at CM, and 8 as DM. -His passing accuracy this season is 4th best midfielder in the league behind two Brighton midfielders and Bissouma (91.5%). -He was Crystal Palace's player of the season two years ago. -Literally has never been injured in 4 seasons. -Reasonable transfer fee, (30-40 million?) and completes the midfield spending for next season. Assumes no suitors for Partey and uncomplicates the moving parts. He has been treated like dumpster trash by the club he joined as an 8-year old... He was regularly Chelsea's captain and the first name on the team sheet with Poch, yet look at his contract situation. He's only on 50k a week, which puts him as the 18th highest earner in the Chelsea squad. Chelsea have let his contract run down to it's final year, and there's some speculation that Gallagher has asked for 150k in wages which Chelsea will not agree to. It's literally so shameful and disgusting. Arsenal can give him a new family in London just like Kai!! ⚽

I remember after the Fulham away game, Arsenal were 4th in the table after 20 games, with 40 points.... Think its fair to say Arsenal lost the title in the first half of the season, the title was not lost in the city draw or the villa loss... those results were just blips in a fine fine run since the new year. 40 points from 20 games is not a title winning tally. extrapolated over 38 games, it would have resulted in 76 points, thats top 4 form. not title challengers. There were so many games in the early part of the season where we were barely getting through, last minute wins (luton, united) , lots of games won a 1 goal margin... back to back losses to west ham, fulham.. a few draws here and there.. We took 1 point off fulham and 0 against villa.. Its easy to look at these things in hindsight ofc, I'm sure if Arteta knew one of those games would cost us the title eventually, he'd absolutely leave no stone unturned to turn one of those results to a win by hook or by crook, but keeping that consistency in the heat of a season with fixtures coming thick and fast, its easy to lose focus, and thats the next step for this team and Arteta to prove, that no matter what, we are not gonna give anyone an inch, any game, any minute. And to be fair, we play almost all of our games with that intensity, but in a select few games we let the standards slip, mostly during the first half of the season.

Every year for the last 4 years we have subsequently got more points, more goals, a better goal difference and moved up the table in 3 out of 4 years. All we need to do is continue this upward trend for another year and the PL trophy is ours to lose. We will certainly strengthen the squad with players that are not just bench warmers, they will be competing to start. Look at the stats and project the trends to next season and this is what we could see: 2020/21, 8th, 61 points, +16 GD, 55 GF 2021/22, 5th, 69 points, +13 GD, 61 GF 2022/23, 2nd, 84 points, +45 GD, 88 GF 2023/24, 2nd, 89 points, +62 GD, 91 GF 2024/25, 1st, 97 points, +70 GD, 95 GF

Morning Gents, I’m going to have to disagree with you I’m afraid. I agree the POTY was an easy decision - but it’s not Declan, it’s Saka! Most goals and most assists (broken his own record as well) for the best attacking team the Emirates era has seen. Led the way by an unhealthy margin in the first half of the season before the floodgates opened. Declan definitely helped us defensively, and has been a massive part of this winning team, but without Bukayo, the race would have been over in November!! Best RW in the league this season by a distance. Unfortunately (and this is nationwide), everyone has simply become too used to Bukayo being brilliant - and so he becomes under appreciated! I mean Michael Owen saying he’d start Gordon over Saka is just a reflection of the general discourse around him

From playing with us to being our captain to painfully seeing him in powder blue beating us from an opposing bench. He knew our weaknesses from within and playing against us. He's my GAFFER 1000% . Arteta and Edu have my support 1000%. 18 other EPL clubs would do anything to be in our shoes. I AM GRATEFUL, PROUD, HAPPY about our club's season and how hard they worked.
