I recently came across a KZbin video by that declared that 'Britain's Roughest Estate' lies within the West Midlands town of Walsall. According to the video, the Blakenhall Heath estate is highlighted as one of the most dangerous in the area. Apparently this is a place where knife-wielding youths run riot and a police no-go area. One particular road, Dawson Street is referenced as akin to 'war-torn Ukraine'. According to the video description, "The national media has recently described Dawson Steet and the surrounding area as Britain’s roughest estate, where knife-wielding yobs run wild among other things, and the local media feel the same, calling it a hell hole."
The Daily Mail also got on board and recently published the following article www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...
Why does this interest me so much? Although I have now moved away from the area, my family hails from this neck of the woods. I very much have Walsall blood flowing through my veins. Indeed my grandparents lived most of their lives only a stones throw from the notorious Blakenhall Heath estate. I am well aware that this is a rough area, but I have travelled all around the UK making these videos and I was sceptical that this was indeed "Britain's Roughest Estate". I had to visit and find out for myself... Is it REALLY that bad?

I come from Dartford and am from a poor lower-working class family. I'm now about to turn 60 and for over twenty years I've been living in Japan. Here, anti-social behaviour does occur, but it's extremely rare. Here. kids from a very young age are taught responsibility for their local environment by cleaning their classroom every day, helping keep streets, parks, and other spaces tidy, etc. There is enormous pressure to conform rather than not conform. That has its own problems, but the advantage is that almost no kids behave in a destructive way. However, what happens here won't work in the UK because the fabric of society is completely different. Years ago when I was living in Bethnal Green I passed an infants' school playground and saw scruffy kids shouting, trying to break things, and generally looked anxious. A few days later I was on holiday in Bangkok in Thailand and passed a playground and saw kids immaculately dressed, singing, playing and laughing. The difference spoke volumes. The answer is very complex.

My wife is from Taiwan and we go to Taipei city every year. Again, everything is immaculate. No graffiti, no kids on the street causing trouble. There’s no eating allowed on the underground trains and people actually abide by the rules. And just the general manner of people is pleasant. I want to live there one day.

Back in the late 90s/early 2000s, my uncle used to own a video game shop at the top of the escalators in the Quasar centre called Action Replay. That was back when the town centre was worth going to. May I just point out as a Walsall Community Volunteer that at 03:48 on the video you are outside CEX game exchange, the red shuttered building., it is open 7 days a week and busy These shutters are down as those windows are *not* in use they have racking the other side. I personally removed the graffiti on these on the 20th January this year (2024). I note you went down station street to the grey frontage buildings, these are an old factory, now storage, again no graffiti as I have painted it out. You found *no* standing graffiti tagging in the town centre as the red CEX shutters were the last part I needed to do. Now it is just maintenance. I visit weekly and clean up, I have all the issues in hand, for instance the market stalls, some empty as in the winter there is less footfall , in the summer there are more stalls open. I have repainted all of the flat folding panels 45 of them all in black, I get all the kit by donations and have took this work on off my own back. I'd like to point out the stabbings that have tragically happened due to gang violence at night very late early morning, not involving ordinary people. Walsall has issues as all post industrial towns have but top quality volunteers are addressing the many issues to make the town better. I cannot comment on Blakenall I do not live or work in the area, but let support areas struggling by seeing the positives.

Credit to you for putting the effort in to look after your local community. We could all do with a bit of this to bring us together rather than the division we seem to see too often. Too often we hear about the majority being fine and it's just a few bad eggs that spoil it but it's easy to say that and just let places slip into destitution. We can all take some responsibility to look after the areas we live in, granted I feel this should be funded by local authorities and by extension: government funding but until that happens, it's well intended folk like yourself that we need more of and those of us that do not do so can at least put the effort in to offer some appreciation. Big love to you ❤

Betting shops, tanning salons and sports direct, the 3 key signs to spotting a poor high street. I live in France (Lyon)and quality of life here is chalk and cheese compared to back home (Newcastle). Bins are collected 3 times a week, I can book a doctor appointment online weeks in advance. Your place of work contributes 50% to your public transport costs and people have the money to holiday regularly, it saddens me to what is happening in the UK but there still isnt no place like home.

I Was born and bred in Walsall but my parents moved us up north in 1958 when I was 11 yrs of age. The Beechdale Estate and Moseley Estate were then comparitively new council estates. back in the 50's it was an entirely different town and went shopping with my mother every Saturday. Something I always looked forward to. I no longer have any relatives who live in Walsall as they've all past away.I moved back to the Midlands in 1970 but live on the Albrighton side of Wolverhampton and never have the need to travel to Walsall. I am saddened to know that Walsall is no longer anything like the town I knew as a boy. I ws actually born in Stag hill Road, Blakenhall.

I lived in Blakenall (Severn Road) from the age of 11 until I left home at 23 and moved to Great Wyrley, then left Walsall altogether to move down to Hertfordshire around 4 years ago. I was born in 82 and have also lived in Goscote, Mossley and Leamore and had friends in Beechdale and Bloxwich. All of those places have been rough as long as I can remember, but I can honestly say even up until the late 90s when I went to Walsall College, the high street was pretty good for a small town. A lot of my family were market traders and I've worked on several of those pitches around my late teens and early 20's. My uncle used to own a video game store at the top of the escalators in the Quasar centre called Action Replay. If anyone remembers the really tall teenager that was often behind the counter after school, that was me.

Growing up in Walsall and an estate near to Blakenhall, it's always been rough but as a kid, you felt the worse case scenario was ending up in a dispute which meant you had to fight you're way out of. 99% of people from these estates would have experienced this, it's just the way it was. The estate I was from, fighting was a way of settling an argument and you'd be encouraged to shake hands after. You'd get the exceptions but most people were honourable... that's not glorifying things, it's just the reality. Going out drinking in town, there was often a mood or a vibe which meant you knew it was going to be one of those nights where there'd be a lot of trouble, but again, there was no fear of potentially being stabbed and losing your life so there was no deterrent to going out. My point is, this whole knife culture the country seems to be facing is what's ruining our towns. I love my home town but it's sad to see that we're being plagued with the pandemic which has made it's way up from London.

Me to. I always tell people you had to be quick with your fists or quick with your feet growing up in Blakenhall. It was tough but not dangerous unless you were looking for trouble (like most places). Still plenty of good families living there, its just the few that give it a bad name sadly.

There's also rates of Housing Benefits paid in various locations published. But I am pretty sure in some locations. Housing Benefit rates are not published at all and just top up people's wages so they can't afford their rent. Just to a level of what they might claim in welfare or.. Bloody Communists !!

I had a friend who lived in a really rough part of the city I grew up in. Half the houses were boarded up, there were burned out cars, the roads were severely damaged from petrol bombs and fires. Gangs of kids would randomly attack anyone who was an easy target. Drugs were rampant. It really did look like a war zone, and this was in the 90's. I haven't been back there for 20 years but apparently it's still really rough although they did eventually resurface the road. I spent a fair amount of time in Walsall last year and while there is a lot of poverty, I can't say that I saw any crimes taking place. I was warned to avoid the town centre after dark, but that's fairly normal, at least in and around Melbourne, Australia where I live. As for the market, it varies. Usually if the sun is out, there'll be more shoppers than on days when it's raining. The CeX that appears shuttered is actually open, they just have the shutters down on the windows that they aren't using. What I found in Walsall was a great community spirit and a lot of love, but that was my experience, it's obviously not going to be everyone's experience.

I was born and bred in Blakenall, lived in Barracks Lane and went to Harden Junior school back in the late 70's and early 80's it was rough back then but everyone looked out for one another, what spoiled it for the youth was the council that put up restrictions stopping kids playing ball games and not funding local youth centres, there's nothing for the kids to do apart from cause mischief, if a council neglects its duty then this is what the outcome is and no doubt it as happened all over the UK, don't blame the citizens blame the government for not caring about run down areas across the UK

I've always said the same, even as a kid (I'm nearing 30 now), there was just nothing really to do, nothing for me at that age. If there was anything, it definitely wasn't known to me, or ever really presented as an option. I'm really not surprised kids are like this now, they have little direction and nothing to do other than cause problems.

The Manor might be bad but you need to get yourself over to East London & South London before you claim its the worst in the UK. It also depends where you are talking on "The Manor". East Bank Road/City Road or the roads connecting off them.. The one thing you do notice on a few of the roads is every House has a Burglar alarm fitted. If a Car has been stolen then its likely to be dumped on the Manor.. Its been years since Ive been on it & would never go on after dark but its nothing compared to some areas of East London.

Not all houses are taken from people , I have worked in social housing and many do a moonlight flit to escape debts etc often taking their boilers etc with them , hence the need for shutters, also houses that are empty on these estates are targets for boiler and copper thefts so they need shutters and alarms installing so they can be turned around quickly for new tenants .

Most people don’t know this but Canada is the second most drug addicted country in the world. My parents are from Penderal St, Blakenall and the majority of people that live in the area are sound. It’s not that bad, just the antisocial morons running around making other people’s lives a misery. I suggest Walsall Council do their job and help clean up the mess, if they did, it wouldn’t look that bad.

Check out the videos of why people are leaving Canada. Honestly, England is a great place to live, a beautiful country full of interesting places and culture. This guy just looks for the bad and uses really unfortunate souls in his thumbnail’s as clickbait, crap eh..

Councils have a responsibility and below average brains to deal with this stuff, so it seems; a bit of blight on our democracy really. I've always been of the opinion that if you don't like a place, then get to work on improving it.

I've been living in Walsall for a few years now, am originally from Birmingham where it's no better. Check out Slade Road in Erdington, Birmingham. That's been in the news too. Was so nice when I was growing up, now it's a no-go area with HMOs, prostitution, drugs and suchlike.

it's sad.... but a consequence of what society has become... what is there for people to do? where's the supportive famlies to live with? where are the future prospects!? Listen to the kids... they don't like it... they want better... but they aren't being offered better! The vast majority of people in that situation will go the same way...... proper homes, proper jobs, make people feel proud and able... they'll pass that to their kids, instead of frustration, dispare and anger.

I remember when it was all thatched cottages and in the centre there was a village green with a duck pond. Local morris dancers would practice there and crown green bowls was played on Tuesday afternoons.

I’m Sheffield born n bred and now live on outer suburbs of Sheffield, this reminds me of parts of Sheffield 25 + years ago and current day, Depravation and poverty looks a lot of the problem and governments don’t seem to be bothered to sort out the issues.

Born in blakenall lived in blakenall heath until i was 9 then moved to palfrey chuckery caldmore until 18 when i moved dudley where i am now. Currently 38 and seen all this coming even at 18 as i was training and studying to be a youth worker when funding for the YOT (Youth Offending Team) and other services like Nacro was cut, until the local goverment step in nothing will change. Caldmore is as horrendous and Blakenall Heath.
