I was born and raised in Red Hook on Vanbrunt street. My mom's and my dad's family's lived in the project and on Vanbrunt street. There was Jimmy's Fruit Stand on Dikeman St and Vanbrunt street. My grandfather and grandmother had the building on349 Vanbrunt street and my father owned 101 Dikeman St until 1988. There was a bar on Pioneer street and Vanbrunt street where the supermarket is and every weekend was lit. There was Gi Joe's pizza and they had the best Thai Pizza, LoL 🤣. I use to work there. We use to swim in the water down the Pier on Coffee street, Smokey Joe's.

Hi Albert. Red Hook is truly one of the most unique neighborhoods in Brooklyn. It has a long and interesting history and is one of the lesser known hidden gems in the NYC area. Thanks for watching!

Hi! I'm doing research on how people have interacted with the Red Hook waterfront over time. I'm very interested to hear that you used to swim down by pier and would love to hear more about that - let me know if I can get in touch with you!

is Gi Joes' Pizza still there now ? What year were you there ? in mid-2008 in a pizza parlor less than 6 miles northeast of there, in the area named GreenPoint, on Manhattan Ave., there was a male employee counter-clerk that had the 1970s/1980s 'traditional' pizza parlor employees face & voice: The dark brown/black hair, the italian-Sicilian-American Prince face/gymnastic looking/& a local sounding gutterey voice & accent.. & a month earlier in another pizza parlor a mile south of there, in North Williamsburg near Bedford Avenue or Driggs Avenue, there was another traditional counter clerk Prince with dark brown hair, local born accent, etc., And in those 2 parlors in 2008 was the last time that i saw that slot of Princes in any pizza parlors ! They're now in their very late 50s-late 60s, & are they're starting to yield the 'Grandpa' faces ! & since around the early 2000s, a lot of young Caucasians have moved from the MidWest States to New York City into the following areas: Manhattan, Red Hook, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn Heights, North Williamsburg, South GreenPoint, GreenPoint, North GreenPoint, & Hunters Point in the southwest end of Long island City, Queens County... All these areas are right at the water very close to Manhattan..

Red Hook has a town of rich history. A few old tymers are still around. Delfonte is must, they been around for over 100 years feeding the community, and the dock workers b4 the dock jobs ran to NJ. The best old school original bakeries on Courts Street. I’m definitely looking for a spot in this area.

I disagree with your statement that Red Hook was unsafe. I was born and raised on Wolcott street. Moved out at age 19 in 1980. I went to school with the same kids for 8 years. Everyone new everyone else. It was the quintessential Brooklyn neighborhood. I would walk those streets everyday and was never unsafe. Unless you were born and raised there you don’t have a valid assessment. I am very proud to say I am from Red Hook.

R. H. still has very close to the same urban superior quality layout that it had in the 1980s !! i was first there in 1988, and in order to arrive there, i entered the Q61 (or B61) Bus in western Queens County in Long island City at the south side of Queens Plaza near 26th Street near the east end of the QueensBoro Bridge... The 61 is still in service today, & it probably still starts at the south side of Queens Plaza near 26th, & then it still drives in a southwesterley zig-zag pattern into the southwest end of L.i. City at the south end of 11th Street, & then it ascends up onto the north side of the Pulaskee Bridge, & then desends down the south side of the Bridge into the area named GreenPoint in the extreme northwest end of Kings County (Brooklyn), & then it resumes the southwesterley zig zag pattern all the way down to the south end of Red Hook at Van Brunt Street near Coffey Street or Reed Street.. in 1988 before the gentrifications started, that intersection was quieter, and then in the 1990s, a new supermarket was added there, & less than a mile east of there, the addition of the new large ikea store, plus several other new buildings within a 2 miles radius.. i was last there in 2014, and the entire area still looked very entertaining !! And i say all this as a person that's originally from the central part of Nassau County, less than 27 miles northeast of Red Hook......

Hi Maida, Red Hook is a fascinating neighborhood and I'm sure it was even more interesting in the 1970s and 1980s. Even though you've moved on to another place, you cant take the Brooklyn out of a Brooklynite! Thanks for watching and please subscribe and check out some of the other travel and neighborhood videos on the channel. All the Best, JP
