Over the past 40 years, the fishing village of Shenzhen has been reborn as a futuristic metropolis bursting with factories. Bloomberg Businessweek's Ashlee Vance travels to the heart of China's tech revolution to witness this new reality firsthand, as part of a three-episode exploration of the city. In part one of Hello World Shenzhen, Vance gets a worker's view of life in a startup and then explores one of the city's famous electronics markets to learn how people survive (and in some cases make fortunes) in such a frenetic, competitive environment.

During the Spring of 1979, I was studying Chinese language. The professor came in one day and announced to the class (a beginning class) that China was soon to be undergoing major economic reforms and that several American companies had approached the Chinese Department for language experts to assist them in setting up business in this new Chinese economic zone. The zone didn't even have a name yet. I mentioned this to several self-proclaimed China experts (lawyers and law professors), and even they didn't believe it possible. They thought it was a joke or that I misunderstood the professor. If they could only see Shenzhen today. Amazing. A great success. That professor had great inside information on an economic miracle about to transform the world.

I only heard about this city a year or so ago. But now I bring it up regularly with people when I speak about how fast China is advancing and how the UK is falling so far behind and literally crumbling apart! That fact that this place was only a small fishing town with a few tens of thousands of people to what it has become today, in such a short period, is just amazing to me! I would move there in an instant given the chance!

Don't forget China holds two large regions hostages in occupation since the 1940's, committing mass atrocities worse than the Apartheid states. Tibet and Xinjiang are being ethnically cleansed. 3 million people in Xinjiang are in detention camps right this moment, and recently the UN released a report on it.

I studied 6 years ago in HK and used to visit Shenzhen. It is used to be the city of cheap tech but bad quality. 4 years ago I had a job in retailing industry and we used to import a lot of Cell phones from Shenzhen, tons of goods coming down to HK from Tech city and a lot of potential clients. Now I'm happy to see that this city is alredy a power hub for Tech Industry not just in Asia also in the entire world. I had the honor of watching how this city evolved so much from outside China in just a few years . Congratz China for this archievement Greetings from Mexico

What China has achieved in 40 years is unimaginable! Thanks largely to the visionary, Deng Xaoping. He laid down the blueprint for Shenzhen that transformed a once fishing community into an amazing megacity, tech hub. That same blueprint has been replicated all over China as evidenced in the breakneck economic growth we see today in China. Honestly, I have nothing but respect for the Chinese.

*They will never never never never .... never overtake the US/Silicon Valley.* If it was not for the allowance of Chinese foreign national grad students studying in the USA, China would have NO chance for even ideating innovation on a decent level. The Chinese were thrust into the future by western politicians (globalists), at the expense of its own citizens, resultant to China's entry into WTO, GATT, MFN. Otherwise, China would be ... *_nothing!_*

@@qncsc Yawn. We paid tuition. We purchased our knowledge. Please don't pretend to be a saint. If there were enough American students willing to pay full tuition there wouldn't be any Chinese in American industry. Unfortunately not enough Americans wanna be "nerds" and work on math non-stop everyday. How about enact a law forbidding all Chinese students in higher education. See what the Universities have to say. Geeze. Get yourself a diploma and stop complaining. You can drive all Chinese nationals out by inspiring your fellow Americans to work hard on their curriculum. If you don't like Chinese then do something about it. For example, get in a top CS program in the US. One more US citizen means one less Chinese spy.

@@qncsc And before you reply anything. You need to understand how hard it is for a family in a 8000$ GDP per capita country to afford US undergrad tuition. So don't bitch about the money. It's much harder for us to get in than any Americans. Not to say we have to learn a foreign language so different from our own. Every tried to learn Chinese? It's easy to do research on Google to know a lot of these new tech giants that are born and raised in SHENZHEN. But the small startup are not so easy to see for the public, nor can much info be found on the internet about the down to earth and vibrant startup scene. So I am glad Bloomberg focus on them, good job!

it is amazing to see how all the people from the world come tgt in china and achieving their dreams here. While they r developing their business, they also bring up a lot of other business and train up people, thats what we called mutual benefits. People thought we need foreign investment, but what we always need are ideas, inspiration, diversity, a culture of acceptance, determination... these are the soft-powers for a country to grow and i m not talking just the western people, Vietnam, Pakistan, India, Europe, people from Africa. You cannot stop being amazed by their brightness and diligence
