Is Costco worth the emotional and time effort these days?! Come with me to the Costco of London UK to see what Christmas goods we can find and see if they are good value. This was filmed at the Wembley Costco in north London Nov 2023. Do you have a membership, is it worth it? What are your must have items?

As an American, I was shocked at how uncrowded that Costco store was. Every Costco in the US that I have shopped at is always packed - doesn’t matter the day or time. Kirkland is their store brand and it’s usually quite good and nearly equivalent to main brands. The UK Costco does have some items I wish we had over here. I found it interesting that you are able to buy a single loaf of bread, where as in the US, you must buy bread in packs of 2 at Costco. Everything is big, but as an American store, it fits with the larger houses over here.

As a Brit, I'm also amazed at how quiet the London store is. I live 100 miles away in Birmingham, and the local Costco is ALWAYS heaving to the point that I can't shop there most of the time. We also queue along the highway to get into the fuel station. I have the impression that Costco in the US also looks very quiet when I see vlogs from there.

In the States, Costco’s prices are ALWAYS lower than anywhere else (outside of crazy sales)… but one of the best things about Costco is that companies often package items specifically for Costco with extras that would be add ons anywhere else. We buy sheet sets there that are AMAZING. I’ve never seen them anywhere else.

I rarely see anything at Costco (in the US) that you can do a head-to-head price comparison. Of course many things are sold under the Kirkland label, but even the major-brand items always seem to be “unique” in some way, so no taking a model number and comparing.

I think that because Costco has limited their total goods, everything available should be on display. In the US Costco is known as paying their staff very well and providing good benefits.

Glad you were able to visit your local Costco. Their corporate headquarters are just a few miles away from home. The Kirkland brand is named after the city of Kirkland across the lake from Seattle. The prices can be very competitive. LEGO at Costco is usually a good deal. The return policy is the best of any retailer. Look for items that are unique to that store’s region. Prices followed by an Asterisk is a one-time only Close-out item. Such a fun vlog of your first visit!!

Costco is an American gift to the world. Costco has an excellent reputation for being good to their employees, proving you can be an exemplary employer and still make a profit. I have never shopped at a Costco outside the US and this location in the UK is almost identical to the stores here in Colorado but I was mystified by the ‘qualifications’ for membership. I pay USD60 for a one-year membership and, Bob’s your uncle, I was in the door. No questions asked. I live alone so many of the massive sizes of food products make some items unreasonable but, my god, the booze is very reasonably priced and of excellent quality. Of particular mention is the Kirkland-brand Champagnes. Yes, bottled in France, it’s excellent for mimosas, a Kir Royale or an impromptu French 75. No bags at checkout but the staff are always ready with leftover cardboard boxes. Lastly, our Costco locations are infamous for the ubiquitous and plentiful free-food samples enticing members to buy that 50lb bag of pretzels. In fact, one of my friends, who is seriously rich, loves going to Costco on a Saturday morning just to try all the free stuff offered in nearly every aisle. 🤷‍♂️

Some popular items come back with different packaging or other minor changes.

My husband and I shop at Costco in the U.S. it's great for buying basics like toilet paper and paper towels. The thing is, you need the space to store it all. Also here in the U.S. a lot of us have an extra giant freezer in the garage. I lived in the U.K. in the 90's and some of my neighbor's had smaller refrigerators. As long as ypu have the space to store the big packs Costco is great for certain items.

Hannah, in America, you arrive early, very early or late in the day. Shopping there can be a one stop shop - for most household items. In the US, you can purchase tires and have them serviced there while you ship, purchase gas for your car, buy a car, appliances, flooring and much more through Costco. Prices are competitive especially when you own your own business. Worth buying big so you do not have to visit a gorcery store multiple times a week. No brainer!

Fun fact: Costco originated as a Price Club membership warehouse in San Diego, California way back in 1970’s and eventually merged with Costco warehouse (established in Seattle in early 1980’s) from the previous business partners who all worked for original owner back in 1970’s. To date, it’s the largest and most successful warehouse retailer…perhaps worldwide.

There use to be restrictions. Same with a lot of other wholesalers, but I can't think of the last time I went to a wholesaler in either the US or Canada where they refused to allow me to buy a membership. Heck, a couple I've been to no longer even require memberships. I remember being really little in the late 80s/early 90s and having a giant list of stuff my parents would pick up for people that couldn't get memberships whenever we went shopping. It sucked.

The membership rules sound a little different from the US, but otherwise it seems to be very much the same. You’re a brave soul for venturing in at this time of year (I went recently and it was absolutely bonkers). I go for certain things and ignore the rest of it (I go early and try to get in and out as quickly as possible). I view it as a necessary “evil”. My time these days is just too valuable to spend literally roaming around a huge, crowded, visually uninteresting, store. Like you, Hannah, I'm just exhausted watching you at the end of this vlog! Perhaps stores like Costco would have been more of a value when we had 5 people living at home, but there aren't enough incentives for me to go. I also find, that many of the food items, while reasonably priced, aren't really the best quality with many of them using inferior and even unhealthy, ingredients. I'm also at a point where I try really hard not to impulse buy, and this is what stores like this one banks on. I liked comparing the UK store/experience with the one here in the US.

I joined up in my neck of the woods, when they first opened, more decades ago than I care to remember. When I go I always seem to come across something I always wanted. Great buyers I guess. The items I buy are canned drinks, tinned tomatoes, large container of Geeta mango chutney, cat food pouches (about £5 cheaper than supermarket), bin bags, meat and fish. The individual Victoria sponge cakes are really nice, & the sandwich platters and sandwiches are also nice. You do after a while of going to Costco get a feel for what is a good deal, and what isn’t. I but staples from Costco - paper towels, toilet paper, cat and dog food, cat litter, dishwasher tabs, detergent. I also buy appliances from Costco. Costco has the best return policy of any store - except for electronics everything is returnable at any time, even a year later. Edit: If you buy any food and you don’t like it, return it -you can in the US, I assume you could at the London store. I don’t like their pastry but I buy their fresh fruit, wine.

Hannah, as always, your a good steward of the London shopping experience. I must say, and I know I've said it before, your London Costco puts mine to shame here in South Florida. I'm almost ready to say something to management, but I know it would be a waste of my energy. Anyway, you always brighten my day. Keep up the good work. We'll see you Tuesday. :) P.S. I do not hear any lisp when you speak. Take care, Mike.

as an American, my personal tradition is to go to Costco the day before Thanksgiving to buy a pumpkin pie. It's so much fun and people seem to be in good moods. Last week, by 2pm, they had sold out of 1200 apple pies and didn't know how many pumpkin pies they had made $5.99!). On weekends, there are often taste tests of various foods that are on offer. The prices on the end caps can be hard to find but they are usually there somewhere.

I absolutely love Costco! I go every couple of weeks to buy some items in bulk. The prices are much lower at the Canadian Costco, vs regular grocery stores. I was impressed to see that you went on a weekend. I typically go during the week around 3:30-4, and it’s tolerable. I was surprised however, to see so few people in queue on a Saturday in the UK! In Canada, it’s horrendous past 10am!

I felt the same way about our Costco (NY). I was never sure if I was actually getting a good deal. Also there are only two of us so we kept ending up with more stuff than we needed. So we cancelled our membership.

I’m in Australia- we had a membership card when it first opened my way, was $60 AUD per year. We went a few times but just bought food, mostly junk. We haven’t shopped there in years and I can’t see me going back. I thought it was a waste of money and so much processed food. My sister-in-law loves it though, and does her bulk groceries there.

As an American I do enjoy Costco! we're a household of 2 and that is where we go for most of our shopping outside of fresh produce. it's just as packed and the people are just as aggressive as the grocery stores and/or Target. People are super aggressive out in public nowadays for some reason in America, I wish ours was as empty as yours! Waiting through the line at the end sucks but at least here they have a system down pact to shuffle everyone through very quickly. it's not a pretty or aesthetic experience but it for sure beats paying a premium for smaller-sized everyday items. If you live on your own though may not be worth it, things are just too large and I wouldn't get through it all before it expires.

Someone did the breakdown on costs at Costco vs the regular retailer. Tne cost savings was $1.14 per purchase. The USA membership would require 53 visits to break even on cost of the membership. Costco benefits those who buy large quantities. Also, the membership accounts for 72% of the companies profits. I shop at Costco twice a week. Located in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Avoid the long lines by going to Costco when it opens.

I always used to be exasperated (and a little bit sneery) at my husband’s bulk-buying of toilet paper at Cosco. Don’t know if was the same elsewhere, but during the Covid-19 epidemic British people panic-bought bog roll so there was a shortage pretty much everywhere. We were possibly the only household that didn’t have to worry about being careful, all thanks to my husband being a weirdo 😁 🇬🇧

First off, Hannah - I think you're absolutely lovely! Your stream of consciousness style is a joy to watch and my BF and I have been watching a tonne of your videos as we plan our trip in the new year. As a Canadian who spends a LOT of time in our local Costco, this was fascinating. Super jealous of some of the readymade food you have there - I'd have been all over the peri peri! Your prices on the food is SO much better than here - I want all of that cheese! Thanks for this - have a wonderful weekend!

I got a pack of 12 baked beans once and they smelt like a pond erghhh, madness. But their chocolate brownies are delish I love going at Halloween time. And their Kirkland brands are nice the maple syrup 😋 I found not that cheap or really great deals but I go for the different stuff 👍

Never thought I would see you do a vlog on Costco. Costco is a unique store - we always go at 7 am - not too crowded and we zip right along. But that is in the US. Your Costco had lots of neat things - we were just in Scotland and stopped by a Costco near Aberdeen - always fun to see the different offerings.

1. KS = Kirkland Signature, Costco’s own brand (named after Kirkland, Washington, USA, home of their world headquarters). From my experience, ANYTHING of this brand is of excellent quality (as good or better than any ‘name brand’ item) and I would buy without hesitation. (Quality is much higher than Sam’s Club’s ‘Members Mark’ brand.) 2. ANYTHING from Costco’s in-store bakery is of high quality and absolutely DELICIOUS! 😋 3. I love Costco (even when living on a limited income)! I bypass the higher priced ‘luxury’ item and get the items I need. Over the long run, I save money by shopping at Costco.

Love a Costco and its always fun to see the different or same food in the food court and deli for each different country. And the free samples are great way to a cheap lunch. The general layout seems the same at least in the US/AUS/UK Costco's.

I signed up just for the cheap fuel; anything up to 15p a litre cheaper than regular fuel stations. My savings on petrol alone covers my annual membership fee of £74.40 within three months. Depending on what you buy, it tends to work out cheaper compared to your regular supermarkets for the majority of the time. Regarding the hot dog and a drink; they sell it at a loss as the founder stated "over his dead body" will they ever increase the price. The price is practically set in stone.

Loved the vlog Hannah! As a single woman, I don’t shop at Costco. Not worth the membership cost & the overwhelm :) It is a good place to shop for a giant food scene in a film where the look is “middle of the road” and none of the actors have to eat anything! Although those macarons were great value and I could do some fancy macaron towers on the cheap 😂 for Handmaids Tale. Have a great weekend! 💖
