My Club for last 26 years. Been travelling from UK regularly during that time. Great Club, even though success and honours always elude them, and a great City. Whilst the 'New' Stadium looks impressive i much prefer the old Millerntor, ramdhackle, crumbling, proper football arena. Standing on the Nordkurve with all the headbangers was a real experience. Still, you cant stop progress and if they ever do get back to the Bundesliga(the only time ive experienced the Brown and Whites in such lofty company was a good many years ago, more used to Regionalliga and Zweite liga) at least the Stadium will look the biz.

Visited Germany with my wife and kids in summer 22 to see her sister and sister’s husbands family and the husband is a huge Hansa fan. He got us tickets to Hansa vs St. Pauli and it was the most insane football experience I’ve ever had! Especially since Hansa won 2-0 which included an outrageous Verhoek bicycle kick! Respect to St. Pauli and obviously their derby has its roots in political differences but honestly Hansa was a lovely area and most Germans are on the same page politically compared to where I am in the USA. Just to give you an anecdote on your point from Germany: A few years back, the German national team had a home game in Hamburg (which they played at the Volksparkstadium of Hamburg's other big club HSV) and they had their final practice with the media in attendance at Millerntor stadium. Somebody at the German football federation ordered the "No football for fascists" slogan prominently displayed on one of the stands to be covered so it wouldn't appear in the media covergae and the majority of the German public was like: "who the f*ck would disagree with a statement like that?"

A bunch of us saw matches there in 1991 and 1992 on the way back from Chelsea pre-season tours in Scandinavia. There was only seats on one side and terraces all round back then. Everybody was in black...everybody. We were made welcome and a fella called Dirk showed us around. First year, visited the Supporters Club and went up to see the Rote Flora and the protests / confrontations with the police. Other time, were invited to a birthday party held on a huge floating pontoon in the nearby docks. Every time a massive ship went past, a minute later we'd be clinging onto to all the beer and grub as the bow wave hit. lol. We later all piled up to the street off the Reeperbahn when reports than HSV fans were having a pop at a St. Pauli bar. Backed them off out of it with the help of a few off duty British squaddies. Love the football culture in Germany, something we've lost quite a lot of in England. Happy memories.

From my point of view here in Germany, FC St. Pauli sadly has become some sort of lifestyle brand within the last 10 or 20 years (at least outside of Hamburg) instead of a proper football club because of marketing reasons, documentaries on TV, KZbin etc. Today, people from the upper middle class stick a skull & bones badge on the back of their SUV so that they can feel rebellious once again in their lifetime without really following the football team.

Standing against racism and facism is not sanctimonious or hipsterish. My father was anti-nazi and anti-fascist - he was a pilot in the RAF during WW2. Woke means being aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues especially of racial and social injustice. How 'woke' has been used as an insult says more about the people saying that than anything else. I was in Hamburg for the G20 and it's a truly great city.
@David-yj7qn Жыл бұрын
a lot of modern"woke" people tend to not tolerate any opinion but their own which is quite ironic imo. Some of the stuff "woke" people sometimes say or stand for is outrageous, which is why some people, me included, don't give them a pass simply because they primarily stand against evil things such as fascism (their definition of fascism is really vague and can be extended to frame anything as evil that is against their current agenda).

Club member who loves the club for what it stands for and for the often great atmosphere. But yes it’s kinda true it’s more often lifestyle and political surroundings than things football which drive the club. Think it has become more extreme now coz on one hand we have the less than mediocre football like a dwarf at the sport side of things and a merchandising giant which always try to use football as a vehicle to transport its political views. If football becomes too big, the message will maybe become too small, coz it may have to find its way pass all those merchandise and football related stuff. If the football becomes too bad, the club will relegated again to 3rd tier divisions and much needed money is missing for all those ongoing social projects. At the end of the day the club is way to big to perform such poorly when it comes to football , but there are supporters (like me) who still hope the club stays small and second tier that football and merch won’t become too dominant so it’s enough room to carry out social messages …. So FCSP finds itself in a weird place hard to balance out always between not wanting to lose its soul or overstretch merchandise and yuppie image or wanting to become a proper football team coz under normal circumstances ikes of Bochum, Mainz, Augsburg are no match for a club as big as FCSP

The good thing aboot Aberdeen is we're apolitical as a club. For us politics should be left ootside the stadium. We're proud to be Scottish, and that's it. STAND FREE 🟥⬜️🟥

As a Gers fan I agree wholeheartedly with you. As long as you keep the sheepshagging outside the ground also 😀

Marketing tool more than a club. On board with the sentiments but I prefer a club like Union Berlin with the same political sentiments that don't use it as a marketing tool so gain capital.
