As a German myself, I like the profanity that is expressed here. My grand uncle volonteered for U-Boot, because it was his changse to escape his boring, little town life. Yeah, and it's good that the movie portrays them as people. Because it is people that do evil things, and anyone has that capacity. If you purely demonize them you won't recognize evil when it comes to your doorsteps, and you may even lead some people to feel betrayed when they realized they've been lied to, Nazis weren't entirely evil demons, the average guy had feelings, loved ones, dreams, were passionate, and that miss-characterization attracts some people to think they've been lied too about the Nazi ideology, which is obviously a bad thing. It's regular people that do evil things, realize that, and don't be them.

I saw the film for the first time a few days ago. When the scene came up where the mother is standing on the wall and her shoes are on Jojos's eye level, I immediately knew it had to be some kind of exposure. Shots like that always fulfill a purpose. And it was absolutely perfect when the moment happened, because it did exactly what it was made for: The scene where the mum stands on the wall is one of the, if not THE happiest scene in the film. It shows mother and son goofing around, having fun, loving each other. The vivid picture of her shoes (and the fact that tying each others shoes stands for affection in this movie) made the scene were her shoes are yet again on his eye level even worse, because you're immediately reminded of the exposure scene. Them having fun, being carefree and goofing around. Really making us aware of what Jojo just lost. Taika is a genius.

This film has a solid foundation in a really good story with interesting characters placed in different circumstances. We, the audience knows the ending to those circumstances which allows us to focus on the character development. The satire and humor juxtaposed to the seriousness of war and dying is a nice respite. But the sweetness of the characters relationships to each other and how their true natures are revealed is heartwarming. It tells us to be hopeful for the future. IMO This film will be a classic.

As a german, I must say, sometimes in the movie I laughed so hard at Hitler being so stupid funny, I was shocked about the sadness and cruelty. My great Grandpa was forced to fight in the war, and he had the order to kill someone (I believe a fleeing comerade). He shot next to him and his Commander send him to the SS for interogation, hewas very close to execution. But luckily he had very bad eyesight and used this as a excuse, so he was transfered to „funker“. My great grandma helped a familiy of jews to pass to america, but she was caught by the SS as well. She was ordered to be executed, but to her „luck“, the russians came and the SS left her to be killed by them but she managed to get away. In the 1960, a letter was sent to my familiy from the jews to thank us, sadly she had already passed away. As my father told me the story, he almost cred, If seen him only cry once in my life. So what am I trying to tell? I have no idea how to discribe it.

I finally saw this movie! I love all Taika movies I have seen so far!. I missed this until now because my son passed 2019. I love how Taika gives uplifting messages to many of his movies. This one has many emotions for me

Taika Watiti is directing the next Star Wars moive
@Oscareuh4 жыл бұрын
Why are they still making Star Wars movies lmao At least it’s in good hands
@Oscareuh4 жыл бұрын
Alvaro CAro eh no the directors were good it’s Disney that screwed up by not having a plan from the beginning and winging the movies. Idk I’m just curious with what Taika has to offer

Blue Moon Studios eh Ryan Johnson didn’t do that good with Star Wars however he did good with knives out

The Mandalorian season 1 finale that Watiti directed was awesome. He is a master of comedy and tragedy.

This is one of the only comedic films I really love, another one would be The Grand Budapest Hotel, they’re both funny in a way but not stupid and meaningless
@domhuckle4 жыл бұрын
Grand Budapest was also a really nuanced depiction of the nazis. Great reference
@Nekotaku_TV4 жыл бұрын
I also love how they show a glimpse of the aspect of the captain being both gay and not really a bad person yet a nazi.
@areyoulostbabygorl2313 жыл бұрын
And also the subtle hints that he didn’t actually support the Nazis (he didn’t do anything about it but still). With the Operation Paperclip reference and his expressions, such an interesting character.

I don’t get how people found this movie offensive. Most of what I read was about how Hitler was portrayed. I’m losing my mind thing that it’s not Hitler, it’s what a kid imagine what Hitler would be like. He’s an imaginary friend, I’m losing my mind on how people are dead set on being upset at everything.

I was this with my parents, and when the part in the square happens we were all just in shock. The movie was both funny and serious.

Love this film, as well as Hunt for the Wilderpeople!! Don’t know why but after seeing both of these movies, I think Taika would do an amazing job at doing a movie based on the book ‘My Place’ by Sally Morgan!

The flamboyant uniform at the end didn't tip you off? I noticed his sexuality was being hinted at in the pool scene, though I do remember thinking it was weird he was feeding some other guy when Jojo's mother takes him to the Hitler youth office and tells him to take care of JoJo.

@@fullmetalpotato1258 I don't automatically associate flamboyant with gay either, though, I felt like that that the uniform drawing and the actual making and wearing of said uniform at the end was the In-case-you-hadn't-noticed-he's-gay scene. In my opinion it would have been random and such a throwaway if it was just there for the LOLs.
