The Atom LT. A genuine masterpiece. I'm like you, Paul - the fit was always good but it's the one area I felt it could be improved upon. As soon as I saw you in it, I could see where the improvements have been made. The Atom LT is just one of those pieces....for those that have never owned one, the way in which those of us that do eulogise over it can be somewhat confusing - until you pick one up and wear one. Then it all makes sense. Versatile isn't the word - I LITERALLY live in mine for 7/8 months of the year in the UK and I'm never less than supremely comfortable. It's a brilliant mid layer. Technical layer. Walk around town later. Walk the dog layer. Winter running later, and it feels like the best jacket in the world for every one of those activities. It's absolutely magic. Damn you, Arc'teryx.! More money spent. 😂🙈

I own about ten different jackets for various mountain activities and I completely concur with this review - it's just such a great versatile jacket. It gets more use on its own than pretty much all my other jackets combined. It's even good for very cold winter running. Actually a bit of a bargain for an arc'teryx item too (relative bargain).

I bought the Atom LT quite recently and am LOVING it. It's perfect for the Netherlandic climate on its own and in combination with a shell. The only thing that would make it better in my opinion is more adjustments on the hood. I bought my girlfriend the women's Atom Hoody, and the side-adjustments on that model really take it to the next level. I do appreciate the LT's fleece side-panels, though, because I would be too hot without them in most circumstances. Great video as always!

I just purchased the new Atom LT hoodie to replace the one I have, which is still in very good conditions. I noticed the stopper on the zipper and I thought it was a defect. The most famous jacket in the world. I have all the atom series (SL, LT, AR) and unfortunately the old atoms LT were not slim fit. I hope this new version with a more slim fit approach will solve what I consider a nuisance so far. I will buy a new one maybe next year. A recommendation: if you get a cheap transpirant Uniqlo blocktech parka and is it as outer layer (rainshell) over the atom lt, it can be the perfect combination for travel winter time.

Personally, I wear a medium in the Beta AR and a large in the Atom LT, but it's largely down to body shape. If you generate a lot of heat, it's possibly worth taking a look at the Proton. It looks virtually identical to the Atom but has a more breathable face fabric which allows wind to pass through, recirculating all the hot air you've built up inside. I'll pop a link to a video we did on this a while ago. Kind regards, Harry. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ganGnpWPpsR3iLM

I've been eyeing the Atom LT for over a year now. I currently own the Proton LT at the moment and it seems to be very similar. The specs say that the Proton is more breathable. I bought the Proton while living in Waimea, Hawai'i on the Big Island where it gets cold but can warm up quick. Breathability is a must in Hawai'i. I moved to Washington state and its freakin cold now. I'm thinking breathability is not as important here.

Hello! I’ve just purchased one of these Atom LT’s from your website and am very happy with it. Would it be suitable for direct contact with a 10/15kg backpack? Or would you need to wear a fleece as a mid-layer and have this as a shell for when stationary? Thanks!
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 жыл бұрын
HI James. The Atom has a tough face fabric that can withstand rucksack use. How you wear it as a layer will hugely depend on what the weather is like, the altitude, your physiology, how active you are etc. etc. The Atom is hugely versatile and works as a standalone jacket and as part of the layering system. Check out one of our earlier videos on layering - kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZm8gHmZbbBgn9E I hope that helps. Paul.

My own experience is that mine has been fine, but others have found it can pill if used with a particularly heavy pack. I would imagine a lot of these issues have arisen from packs that haven't been fitted correctly, though, and excessive movement will wear away at the fabric more than a pack that fits snug and securely.

The Atom LT is probably the most versatile and the one I use more often, so I'd go with that if I had to pick a favourite. @bens1972
@bens1972 3 жыл бұрын
I bought one! It is really good, I’m very happy with it. However, perfect it is not. The hem cinch cords, whilst admittedly very light, have an unfortunate cheap/low rent feeling and irritatingly far back on the jacket which means you have to be a contortionist to adjust them. Secondly, why don’t Arc’teryx just use YKK zips like everyone else. The zip still comes underdone on its own, even though it has zip stops. If you’re between sizes (like me) you may want to consider sizing up as it seems to happen over layering when the jacket becomes slightly too tight fit. That said, this never happens with my Mammut Rime which employs much better YKK zips...(and much better cinch cords)
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 жыл бұрын
HI Ben, the Atom is probably about as "perfect" as you can find, but I do accept your comments, those drawcords can be a bit fiddly. Personally, I've had an issue with the zip and the overall performance of the jacket outweighs (for me) those little niggles. Paul.

One question, if u could have the layering option #1 Arcteryx: RHO AR, Fortrez, Proton LT, Alpha SV or #2 Arcteryx: Satoro, (optional) fleece midlayer, Atom LT Alpha SV. Wich one would you choose as you do "everything" layering system, all from comuting to hiking in the mountains and other activitys. You can also mix and match from the two options if u find a better combo. Would apriciate it if you could help me out with this one. Thanks in advance
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Afet, that's an interesting question/s. As always, the choice of layers will hugely depend on you, your physiology, your metabolism, the geographical location and activity type, as well as personal preference and experiential knowledge. You have provided me with some of the details, and it looks like we're stuck with Arcteryx products, so my option would be: Motus, long sleeved, zipped neck - baselayer Proton LT - midlayer Gamma SL Hoody - wind/outer layer Atom AR - Insulating layer (belay jacket) Beta AR - waterproof outer layer Let me know what you think. Paul.

Not just torn between this and the Proton LT but also whether to go for the hoddy, jacket or vest version. Want it cover a lot of activities. Considering using the Atom vest for tennis doubles (not very fast paced) - shame the proton doesn't come in a vest. Does this sound like a reasonable use? So the other activities I think a atom hoody would be better and as a midlayer it would be better without a hood getting in the way
@trekitt
@trekitt Жыл бұрын
Atom vest would be good as a tennis layer during autumn/winter. The vest is also brilliant as a midlayer, so it sounds like this could be the one for you. The jacket & hoody are best as an outer in most situations.

How do you find the durability of the latest version Atom LT? I've read reviews that even usage with a backpack (and even a seatbelt) damages the material. Also, what's the best way to wash and re-apply the DWR coating? Can't find much online, even from Arc'teryx themselves. Thanks!

Which do you use more - Atom LT or Atom SL? Also, have you tried Atom SL Anorak? How does that compare to Atom SL Hoody
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe, I tend to use the Atom LT more than the SL as it is just so damn versatile and works across all seasons. However, I am having some Anorak lust right now, I'm a sucker for a pullover! For me, pullovers (anoraks) feel so much better than jackets, due mainly to the shorter zip. There's also that feeling of wearing something slightly more "left-field" and "techy". Thanks for watching. Paul.

Is this the 2020 revised jacket that has been available this year (I bought one from Arcteyx 6 weeks ago), or an updated version just released now for Autumn/winter? I’m also wondering if I need to have both the Atom and the RAB microlight down, or is it a choice of one or the other for a layering system?
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 жыл бұрын
This is the new autumn/winter version which has been with us for a few weeks now. Whether you need both/one or the other will depend what you use the jacket for and how you prefer to layer. The Atom can be worn on its own no matter what the weather is doing thanks to its synthetic insulation, whereas the Microlight can't be worn in heavy rain for a prolonged period of time. The Microlight is warmer and more packable though, so is more suitable for drier, colder conditions. Basically, it's personal preference! Kind regards, Harry.

Atom AR video will be released on Friday, however we didn't compare the two. Both the AR and LT are more than suitable as an everyday jacket, but the AR has twice the amount of insulation in the main body (60g/sqm vs 120g/sqm) and doesn't have the air-permeable side panels, so it just depends how warm you need to be, which layers you have underneath and the activities you'll be using it for. Atom AR hands down. If you aren't doing high output activities or using this to layer under another insulated jacket I don't see the hype, it is NOT warm. Hi, thanks for your comments. The Montane and the Arcteryx are pretty similar and will both do a good job of keeping you warm and protected. However the construction is very different. Montane use a blown insulation in stitch through baffles, whist the Atom uses sheet insulation with much less stitching. Therefore the Atom provides increased weather resistance due to fewer cold spots and stitching. The other big difference will be in the fit. The Montane jacket will be a slimmer, more athletic fit. It depends! LT for active use, i.e, when walking, backpacking, climbing, etc, AR for less-strenuous use such as belaying or as a layer to chuck on when you're having lunch/map reading.

Thanks for the well done review, I live in north of Italy and it barely fall below 0 during winter so I am really confused between AR and LT, I prefer LT in terms of how it looks so would appreciate if you recommend me which one is more practical in weather temperature between 6 and -2

It depends what you're doing. For static use, the Atom AR will be more suitable, for active use the LT tends to perform better. This also depends whether you're using the jacket at altitude, which layers you have underneath, etc. Kind regards, Harry.
