For me the AR is a great addition to have as well as your LT. Still so versatile you can wear it on all but the hottest days, but for the winter the LT isn’t sufficient and the AR exceeds expectations of warmth for freezing days.

Just picked this up the day. Agree with most, but I actually feel the jacket is bigger round the waist and torso compared to the older model... The hood provides greater protection around the neck and chin, but also feels a bit bulky. It should be 120 grams in the torso. But overall great jacket!

Well, it is meant mostly to be used as an outer layer. This means it needs to be roomy, if you want it fitter then you would need to size down. I would suggest buying it if you intend to use it for its design purpose.

Great review as always Paul. Sounds like the updates are worth considering. I’ve got the previous Atom AR but I found it way too warm for hiking, even in bitterly cold weather so I use it as my everyday winter coat instead. I have one of the new updated AR's and I find the hood a bit odd. The peak is not really stiffened, it's quite a soft peak, not sure how much use it will be. They've gone for a more sophisticated 3 way adjustable hood, which is good, but for reasons best known to the designers the hood cinch at the back is low down near the neck and rather than tightening it against the head, it just seems to pull it back from your forehead. Therefore if you tighten it up it rides back on your head every time you look down and your head turns a little in the hood if you don't cinch the sides down firmly. To my mind this cinch should be at the back of the head, so I'm not really convinced with this new design. I also find it more roomy than the 2019 version, in the body and the sleeves.
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 жыл бұрын
HI Jonathan. The cinch cord at the at base of the neck is entirely designed to pull the peak away from your face, and is only really needed if you find the front of the hood obscures your vision, for instance when worn without a hat/helmet. As for the fit, I can only comment on my personal experience, and I find it a much slimmer fit in the body compared to the previous version. Paul.
@jonathanshone5517
@jonathanshone5517 3 жыл бұрын
@@trekitt Hi , yes I get the idea behind the neck cinch and it certainly works for pulling the hood back. My preference is for the back of the head cinch as it achieves the aim of the neck cinch and also stops the head moving inside the hood. The Rab Valiance and Montane Flux (picked at random), both approach the same problem (how to make a hood helmet and head compatible) but arrive at a better solution to my mind - the Rab has a wired peak also. With regard to the fit, yes it's personal, my new AR definitely feels looser in the forearms and a fraction in the body. Lovely jacket though!

@trekitt
@trekitt 3 жыл бұрын
The Thorium will be warmer when dry, but if it gets wet it'll lose virtually all of its warmth as it's insulated with down. The Atom will remain warm even if wet, so based on versatility alone the Atom takes the win. Both are similarly durable, so it just depends what you're using the jacket for and where your priorities lie. Kind regards, Harry.

Would the AR fit well under a Beta jacket? Considering getting it for winter with the Beta if it gets windy or rains. Assuming both in size large. (I’m in NL, so similar climate to UK)

Possibly, but this does depend how much room you have between the Beta and yourself. I think I could just about cram it under my Beta AR but it would be a squeeze. They are both great jackets and would work well as over insulating layer when stationary. The V series is certainly lighter and does warm up remarkably quickly. I'm in between sizes on most stuff: I have a proton in a medium which is a great fit (its snug but that's what I'm after for a high output mid layer), I have an atom lt (a fair few years old!) in a medium which is ok (bit small!), and a nuclei in a large which is roomy, but reasonable and I like the versatility. Would I go for a large in an ar for the same versatility or is it bigger? I guess my question boils down to whether the new fit is the same as the current nuclei? any help greatfully received 🙏

15:34 That is a *bold claim* indeed. I bought an Atom AR last year, and it is a phenomenal jacket for when the temps get at or below freezing. Even then Arcteryx was saying that a new version was coming, and I am about to own one of them also. On some cold day when no one in their right mind should be out hiking I'm going to slap on my backpack and put these claims to the test. I still find myself wondering about which one has a more durable face fabric.. The Atom LT or the Proton LT? Which one seems to take better to DWR treatments? If I knew the answers to those things I could finally pull the trigger.
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 жыл бұрын
A bold claim from a bald man! The Atom AR is indeed a brilliant jacket. The fabric on the Atom and the Proton is incredibly similar in regards to durability. The big difference is that the Proton is more breathable. Both will readily accept a retro-fitted DWR treatment, the success of which will depend on the product used. I hope that helps with the "trigger-pulling". Paul.

Unfortunately it depends. Manufacturers can't realistically put warmth ratings to their garments as it depends on what you're using the jacket for, how many layers you have on underneath, how warm you are as a person, etc. This video explains it quite well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYuxq4mAbK56obc Personally, here in the UK, I'd be warm enough in the Atom AR with just a t-shirt underneath for everyday use, but would find it too warm for any strenuous activity. This is always a difficult question to answer as there are so many variables to consider in relation to a jacket's "warmth" However, in my personal experience I would say that the Atom would be warmer, but, the Cerium would pack down much smaller and be lighter. Which do you like better the Atom AR or LT? I have the LT (previous model). Can you hike in the AR? Thoughts?
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 жыл бұрын
Both are great for different reasons. The AR is obviously warmer, so more suitable here in the UK for winter belaying/lunch stops/slow moving activities where you won't be working too hard, whereas the LT is more suitable for active use in the winter, i.e, climbing, backpacking, etc, or for the same use as the AR but in warmer seasons. Kind regards, Harry.

@@trekitt Thanks! I have the Atom LT (previous edition) and my GF, who lives in Finland, loves the jacket. It would be for her around town and for backpacking as a mid-layer. I am torn between the LT and AR for her. :( X-mas is coming up fast. I've been using my Keb Padded Hoodie a lot these days. Love that piece. BTW, side note: have you taken the FJ Abisko View into any windy/rainy conditions? MSR Hubba? Which do you think does better in weather? I have the View, but haven't had it in crazy weather yet. Thanks!!! :)

The Atom will perform better in wet conditions, whereas the Thorium will lose most of its warmth if water happens to get through. I'll pop a video below that outlines the difference between down and synthetic insulation. Kind regards, Harry. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXbCiamwisl2a9k

Considering either this or the Thorium AR as an outer layer/jacket. I tried the Throium in store, but cant find this, how do they compare fit wise?
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 жыл бұрын
Pretty similar, if you fit the Thorium in a medium, for example, you'll fit the Atom AR in a medium too. Regards, Harry.
@thdjjfsfh
@thdjjfsfh 3 жыл бұрын
I owned both for a while and I can report that they fit very similar to each other. Even though they are both AR, I find the Atom is warmer than the thorium when they're both are new. I prefer the face fabric of the Thorium, it looks like it could take some abuse and the smoother face fabric probably mean that it is less likely to snag. I think the thorium will also win the long term durability. I will occasionally sleep in my jacket while camping and I find that synthetic will pack down. Since it usually packs down on the shoulder and back, it might be okay for you.

Hello, I have watched both of your videos on the updated Atom’s, but still slightly confused as to which one to purchase. I do tend to run rather cold, although the flip side is that I have a very active lifestyle in the city and tend to go on long walks in the woodlands come the weekend. I am worried the Atom LT is too light and that the AR is too warm once I actually get moving. If you had to pick just one of these new models for city use, which one would it be?
@ThatEssentialAttire
@ThatEssentialAttire 3 жыл бұрын
I personally think if you're on the move the LT will still be warm enough for you, especially if you're wearing a suitable base layer and I find the LT is way more versatile overall anyway. You're right about the AR though I have the old model and find it to warm even in bitter conditions with low movement its a bit of a one trick pony compared to the LT.
@jaydee394
@jaydee394 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThatEssentialAttire Thank you so much for your feedback. My thoughts exactly, although the further confusion lays in the added ventilation under the arms of this new model which makes it seem like it could run cooler whilst moving compared to the last version. I don’t really want to buy a shell for use in the city, as it seems like overkill, so I guess layering under the LT might be a more appropriate idea.
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jay, the previous reply sums it up perfectly. The LT is by far the more versatile option as you can always add warmth by layering if it's really cold. I have both and the LT gets far more use than the AR. Paul.
@jaydee394
@jaydee394 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Paul, thank you for your reply. With the improvements to the ventilation, do you think the AR would suffice with just a simple base layer or long sleeve top in the usual temperatures/conditions one might face living in London (rarely ever gets colder than 3-4 degrees)? As I mentioned, I do tend to run very cold (6’2” but with very little fat or muscle to protect me), which means I usually over-layer and then overheat as soon I start to move around the city. How cold can the LT run down to with say a merino base layer (such as the Patagonia Capilene Air) and perhaps a light top over it? Also, I want to wear the jacket with a Brize 25 or 32 backpack, so will either materials be able to handle this (it won’t be overloaded, perhaps just a laptop and a few bits for daily use)? Thank you. @@trekitt

The old atom ar is on “sale” on the outlet store. Is it worth spending a little bit more money for the new revised edition or are we better off saving some money by buying the older model? same question for the atom lt as well!
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 жыл бұрын

@@trekitt Thanks for the reply! How would you stack the Atom LT up agains the Proton LT?
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 жыл бұрын
@@ibdoi The Proton is highly air-permeable, meaning it's more breathable and suitable for activities where you'll be constantly moving and pushing out plenty of heat. The Atom's fabric is more wind-resistant and less breathable, making it better for slower moving activities or where you require a little more warmth. The Atom tends to be the more popular choice, but it's all down to what you're using the jacket for. Kind regards, Harry.

Hy Paul, nice and informative review. I have an Atom AR in size M and it seems like its a tad short (feel a bit cold in the lower end). My chest is 95 cm, 1,91 cm, waist is 73 cm and I weigh 63 kg:). Should I sell the M and go for an L? With my weight (more than 20 kg less than you) and chest I think there would be too much free space and cold creep would ensue. The Atom SV in size M fits like a glove, the AR is maybe 3 cm shorter in the front. Wish Arcteryx had never dropped the SV hoody.

HI, if you have the older version of the Atom AR, it had a very short and boxy cut. The new shape would suit you better, but don't be tempted to size up as you will lose a lot of the insulating powers. Thanks for watching. Paul
