I bought my first Montane jacket 13 years ago. I only buy their jackets now, for work or for exploring the outdoors. I still have that 1st jacket, the Flux. I wear it to work as a USDA fruit and vege inspector. Wore my other jacket from Montane (and one of their hats) as i trekked across Iceland last year. It was the first day of summer in Iceland....which is not very summer like to someone from Michigan. The jacket was a perfect layer to have in my pack.

Hi, firstly, I love the review, very informative. I'm currently wearing a Rab Microlight Alpine for walks, on Exmoor, watching sports and general day to day stuff, how does the Montane compare to the Rab, is worth a change?

Hi Rob, it's good to hear that you're getting the most from your Microlight. Rab and Montane products compare equally well in terms of quality and construction, but from personal experience, the biggest difference is in the fit. Montane use a trimmer, more athletic fit and Rab have an easier, more general fit. Paul.

How does these kind of jackets compare to the Fjällräven Keb Touring jacket? Is the Fjällräven (and equivalents) much warmer than those slimmer sportier more compressable jackets? Thanks for an absolutely astounding KZbin channel and consumer advice.

The Keb definitely feels warmer than the Featherlite once you've got it on - it features slightly more down at a higher quality. Both are designed for roughly the same purpose, so it just depends how warm you need to be and which one fits you best. Kind regards, Harry.

Thanks for the review. I’m undecided between this and the rab microlight alpine. Have only been able to try on the Rab in a store as nobody stocks the montane nearby. Is there much difference between the fit between the two ? I found the Rab medium fitted ok, but not too snug as I’m quite slim. How does the medium montane compare for fit ? Thanks !

Hi Jio, that's such a hard question to answer as there are so many variables involved, watch our video on the subject here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqfYnKl5r9B6jZI However, if you were in sealed room with a constant temperature and you were absolutely static, the Essens Mimic would probs be warmer.

Does this pack smaller and is it warmer than the icarus lite? They are similar weights so I wondered if there was a benefit to having the featherlite over the icarus lite. Thanks

Hi Damian. The pack size of the Featherlite would be marginally smaller, but the Icarus will perform better in the wet. If you're using the jacket as an outer most of the time, in typical UK winter conditions, the Icarus is your better option. Paul.

That's a tough one to answer as there are so many variables involved in determining a jackets overall "warmth". However if you compare the fill and total weight of two jackets you going to get a pretty good idea. The Featherlite Down would be less warm than the Icarus. The Icarus would also perform better in the wet. I hope that helps. Paul.

Unfortunately there isn't a best! It depends which one fits you best; I'd recommend trying both on (if you can) and make your decision that way. Both are brilliant options, so you can't really go wrong with either.

Hello again, whats your advice about Montane Featherline, futureline, North Starline or Mountain Equipment Frostline or Arc’Teryx Thorium which is best can you help me please with these Down jackets? I'm very undecided, I need your detailed explanation.

I'm afraid out of those options, we only stock the Featherlite and Thorium, so we can only really give honest advice about those two. It all comes down to how warm you want/need to be and what you're using the jacket for. The Thorium is warmer but subsequently more bulky and heavier, whereas the Featherlite isn't as warm but will pack down smaller and is lighter. The Thorium is better for slower activities, whereas the Featherlite is better for more active use. The Thorium has a more durable outer fabric, but the Featherlite's thinner fabric means it will pack down smaller. It also depends which one fits you best; a jacket which doesn't fit you won't provide the amount of warmth intended, so we'd recommend trying both on. If you're anywhere near us, we stock both in our shop and online.

Neither are better than the other necessarily, both are doing great things. Mainly comes down to which fits you best in the case of an insulated jacket.

@@trekitt thanks. I'm starting to leave The North Face brand. Everyone has them and they are not as exclusive anymore. I noticed on both TNF and Rab down jackets that on the bi cept area , there's always a cold spot, not as much down fill. Anything? I mainly wear a t shirt and throw on a nice down coat to keep warm, thats how i notice this.Do you have this issue with any other brand or jacket? I'm trying Rab or Montane to see what brand I want to build my collection around. Thanks.

I've not personally experienced a cold spot on the bicep-it's normally on the back of the elbow as the down gets pushed out of the way as you bend your arm. A good way to get the down back in these areas if it's moved around is to stick it in the tumble dryer with a few tennis balls for a short while on a low heat. This'll re-loft the down and spread the insulation evenly.
