Just my opinion,but f1 could be doing 300 mph by now,they purposely slowed them down for years and mostly I'm just glad they let the wider wheels come back at all. But it's pretty much a spec race now because when someone does come up with something it becomes controversial. Anyone remember the bendy front wings on the red bull?

No, not really. Innovation like this, yes. Innovation like this, in the manner they did it, no. I wouldn't say they're cheating per se, but they are dipping into things that aren't covered RIGHT NOW. That's where the weirdness is coming from. if the season rules involved using rims for airflow, this would be a nonissue. Everyone would be doing it. It's an issue of timing, more than actual cheating. Remember, the sport is all about technological advancements. They need data from real world test beds(cars) to make sure things work, and they need some regularity to make sure that data isn't tainted. when you introduce new and other things, you can't get a good read on the data you originally wanted.

I just find it odd that the FIA/Charlie Whiting can say something is OK, but a protest to the stewards could potentially overturn this. Can't the teams get a definitive answer from the stewards first? It's as if F1 wants teams to be disqualified after the race, as per Haas.
@The_Curious_Cat5 жыл бұрын
The Haas case is quite different, their floor was illegal, it was their mistake not reading the rules properly since the part that was illegal was quite obvious (the front plate has a specific round corner with a specific radius, they choose to not have the round corners and have the barge-boards attach directly to that part, that is illegal). The problem was that the FIA gave them a timeframe they were unable to comply because they don´t have their own factory, they have to wait for Dallara to build the new floors. But in the end, it was Haas mistake by not reading the rules properly. I agree that the FIA should have a final say on the legality of each piece if they investigated them prior to be installed, if the piece is greenlighted by the FIA, then the stewards should not have a say, unless they find that the piece installed is different from the one the FIA greenlighted (which seems pretty obvious).

This solution had already been rejected on redbull in 2012 because out of regulation. In the GPs in which the holes were open the Mercedes did not suffer from blistering and excessive heating of the tires with a consequent drop in performance, when the holes were closed they suffered the aforementioned problems. The rules MUST apply to everyone and mercedes has proved to be clever at the limit of the illegal while the FIA has been unable to enforce the regulation to the letter. The regulations apply to everyone not one except neither for Mercedes, which obviously has the most significant weight on FIA.

Nah M8 as much as I Agrre with you, they could never do that. Back in the late 80s early 90s, which is getting on 35 years ago the LMP cars at LeMans which aren't even open wheel were approaching speeds of 270mph...MPH in race trim on practice laps before they eventually put the chicanes in. I'm sure cars like the Porsche 962c and the Sauber Mercedes C9 could have easily topped 300 with minimum aero packages. And that's with 35 year old tech non open wheel cars. If you let F1 teams go full out no restrictions with today's tech, they'd probably be able to make cars that could hit 500+mph and still stick to the tracks around the corners. It would just become impossible for human drivers to survive the G forces in the turns. At this point they need a certain amount of regulations for sanitys sake because the tech has advanced light years beyond what human drivers bodies can react to/survive. I think the highest Gs pulled in any kind of racing these days is red bull air race pilots who've been known to pull +12g on occasion and remain conscious... Then again those guys make fighter pilots look like little girls considering they do all this 50 feet above the surface of the water. I belive they've begun instituting penalties for exceeding 10g though, again, for sanity sake. I do agree with you though. It's not a question of innovation, it's a question of budget. It's so much harder to innovate better than your competitors when your competitors have twice the budget and already have an advantage. We're talking tens of millions of dollars in difference. That's why there are so many regulations. "Small" innovations like these cost millions that smaller teams don't have.
@The_Curious_Cat5 жыл бұрын
The difference between the red bull design and Mercedes comes down to position: RB was running a blown axle which basically uses the air coming from the brakes and "spins" it, effectively closing the sides of the car (the "spinned" air helps the organized air between the chassi and this vortice stay in place, instead of bleeding outwards and ruining the effectiveness of the diffuser). The Mercedes rims can´t do this because it´s on the rear of the car, plus the amount of air that comes out of the rim doesn´t seem to make much of an impact aerodynamically. Ferrari is just playing their only card to stop Mercedes from winning the championship again, Mercedes just played it safe and didn´t run the rims after this to make sure those points wouldn´t be removed later on. And of course the new rim will have an impact, it was made to control the temperature of the tire and the blistering because of overheating, which is one of their problems most seasons, so by going back to the previous rim, those problems came back. But if it doesn´t have an impact in aerodynamics, Ferrari doesn´t have anything to hold on to. Because teams are allowed to let the air flow thru the rim for cooling, what they are not allowed is to use this air as an aerodynamic vortice to enhance the air flow thru the car, but that can only happen if it´s used in the front axle, frankly can´t see how they can do this using the rear axle.
@piereligiodisante5 жыл бұрын
Active aerodynamics isn't only banned if affects aero in positive, but also for temperatures. Of course with the exception of the engine cooling.
@The_Curious_Cat5 жыл бұрын
@@piereligiodisante What? That makes no sense, every bit of the car is made to monitor and actively control the temperatures of the brakes, tires and engine. It makes no sense the teams not being allowed to control the tire temperatures, which is key for success. What you cannot do is actively heat or cool down these elements (use a button to turn on some system that does this). They are allowed to cool down any component passively (which are basically what the rims do, they disperse heat from the tire thru the rim, without any active system). And yes, they can divert air thru the rim to help cooling it (which cools the tire) but they cannot gain aerdoynamic downforce on this, which is what is banned from the RB idea of 2012).

This is why i stopped watching F1. Schumacher's retirement from Ferrari actually merged with the death of F1. FIA just neutered the sport. It used to be the source of the most exotic tech that comes to everyday cars ; stuff like ceramic brakes, carbon fiber, magnetic suspension, even the banned active suspension. Except for KERS nothing really comes out of F1 anymore, cos there actually isn't any real innovation. FIA is banning everything new and interesting. Also downsizing the sport doesn't help at all. In essence F1 now is an empty shell of greatest sport ever.

I gotta admit, those generators on the turbo are the one piece of F1 tech I would want to bolt into a production car next year. But yeah, not a lot of interesting development coming out of F1 in a long time. @@ScottKenny1978 I noticed the later years that the sport which has the best tech development is actually WEC. When we had Audi back in it, it used to be an epic 3-way with Toyota and Porsche and i remember thinking "God, this is some real intense shit; we have NA V8 with 1 kinds of hybrid sustem, next Turbo V6 with another kind of hybrid and lastly Turbo inline 4 with third kind of a hybrid and all of them are so close." This is the kind of entertainment i wanna watch. Cars using different methods to achieve the highest performance. And LMP1 cars nowdays are far more advanced than Formula 1 cars. They use a lot more downforce and are capable of incredible time; something which was impossible back when Formula 1 was discovering all of the new tech.

I've not been a fan of F1 for very long, but what I can say is that between being a technological sandbox, and a good spectator sport, the FIA have definitely chosen their side. I think heavy technical regulations are the unfortunate necessity of creating a grid that has any chance of fair racing. Spectators can follow the journeys and fights of the drivers and the emotions that come along side that -- the regulations bring the cars close enough so that the drivers can make a big difference. I think F1 could benefit from a chance in coverage. So much goes on behind the scenes that I think could be really dramatic and entertaining -- the team planning that influences decisions in tire setups and brake balance and such, the kinds of things that can otherwise unexpectedly manifest on track. This is to say, I imagine that if F1 was unregulated, the race wouldn't take place on the track but rather behind closed doors, inside the factory. I mean how much actual coverage of things like this do we see? How much do we see or know about these small, sneaky improvements that teams regularly make to cars? A new innovation would literally just be "oh look a team is winning" and then after a short time every other team would be running it. And eventually everyone would be driving too fast. 2019 is the first year I've followed the season, and there's this X-factor to Mercedes that they use to consistently win. You _might_ say Ferrari has the fastest car, you _could definitely_ say that Max is the fastest driver, but Mercedes has incredible under-the-hood strategy and management and sensibility that helps them come out on top. I feel like it would be interesting to dive further into this, in comparison to RB or Ferrari. I guess it comes down to the fact that, I think, being a technological testground and an entertaining spectator sport are unfortunately mutually exclusive.

I have always had a problem with racing clubs trying to limit innovation. Im now an engineer, but have always been a tinkerer and that has always bugged me. If I come up with a better idea it shouldn't be restricted, other teams should follow suit if they think it is advantageous. I would say that I am more interested in the design than just the driver. I always have spent more time in the garage than on the road anyways, but that is one of the major factors that discourages me from wanted to get into a series. If I build a car I don't want to be severely restricted by class rules in terms off design approach. As long as it doesn't impact safety of the driver or other drivers it should be encouraged. Group B will always be my favorite, but obviously they were too close to the edge for that time.

So, in short, it's engineered to create a vortex of air towards the centre of the wheel. This vortex draws the heat away from the tire to the centre of the wheel as it spins. Then a series of holes at the centre pushes the heat outward, away from the car. Clever engineering isn't really cheating. It's still a spacer, and the added cooling probably helps a bit in the hot tracks. If it's truly effective others should just adapt their own.
