I mean, it probably wasn't personal. Michael Jackson was huge and having him play a main role would most likely distract from the plot of any movie. I think at some point (post-Thriller) his desire to become an actor was shot after he became so huge. He could no longer disappear into a role, no matter how much makeup was required. He would always be Michael Jackson the superstar, and that comes with too much baggage.

Out of all the celebrities in the world; Michael Jackson happens to be the only one I tend to relate to. I’m autistic, I have a hard time communicating among others, and there’s always a few that I tend to have that communicating chemistry with, but the majority I can hardly ever carry a conversation with. Not to mention, I’m quiet and a kid a heart just like MJ, I tend to be misunderstood by others when I try my hardest to fit in and have a hard time accepting myself. However, when I draw, sing, rap, dance, I’m a whole different person. So when I look at Michael Jackson, I see myself in him. As far as michael jackson getting into acting, on one hand he could’ve made it work because looking at his music videos, he has potential and range. But on the other hand, his own star power would’ve overshadowed the movie. I personally would’ve loved to see him star in a cinematic movie. Edward Scissorhands is pretty much Michael Jackson through & through, so Johnny depp did an amazing job.

I’m autistic too well on high functioning level but I love music more than anything. I can’t do art or paint well I’m terrible at drawing . I’m not really so good at math not even algebra I had to take in high school or science. It seems I’m better in the arts but I’m more of a music person and I am a Greek writer a white short poems. I plan on becoming a writer but I just need to take the time to practice. He also wanted to play Peter Pan back in early 90s "Hook" by Spielberg but also got rejected. Spielberg worried it would turn the movie into a "MJ" movie. And he wanted to purchase Marvel and play Spiderman back in late 90s. The hype about Marvel movies we've been seeing for a decade now is because of MJ's idea to make Marvel movies. They just don't allow and want black men to be more powerful than they already are. Cant help but think about Bill Cosby and him wanting to buy NBC. We all know what happened .. (son got killed etc)

I honestly think Michael Jackson is the only celebrity I can relate to. I’m autistic (the non physically visible version of autism, it’s more that I have trouble communicating and connecting with people.) Because I’m autistic I seem to have more artistic and creative abilities (like most people with autism) Though because of my disability of communicating and connecting to people I’m getting mostly ignored and doomed to be the outcast everywhere I go no matter with who I’m with. And from how you’ve described the characters I think I definitely can relate to the character. As for Michael, I know for sure if he were alive today and went to a psychiatrist he’d get diagnosed with something similar or exactly the same as what I have… When I watch some of Michael’s home videos I really see myself as a version of him due to his way of thinking or his mannerisms in general. It's not a surprise. Tim Burton is a bit prejudiced. He hated the idea of the studio wanting an African Descent robin in his batman franchise. Characters are just fictional and their representation can change. Perhaps one would argue that Tim just wanted to stick to the core grail of the characters but I believe how he treated Jackson showed just who he was. Stating that he wanted to cast some one relateble, some one who came from the same "white trash" background. Michael didnt grow up particularly rich either. Infact Micheal Jackson came up really poor yet Tim made jackson indifferent by his statement. This Edward scissorhands movie though had too many parallels to Jackson's life for those indifferent statements of the "white trash" background to be legitimate or valid because if all of them shared the same experience then it didn't matter what race they were. It only did to Tim. I am the most logical person to my core and I believe through thorough thought that not considering mike at all not even enough to give him an audition was just crazy. There has got to be motives behind that.

I agree 100 percent. I noticed a hint of bigotry in Tim’s motives. Not giving even a meeting with Michael who is showing such interest is almost disrespectful. He knew he didn’t want a black man or anyone other than white to play that role. It may be more because it was a personal story and Tim saw himself as Edward. However, as far as art, business and music, there was no other choice better than Michael.

Many misunderstood Mike however Edward scissorhands was the opportunity for people to see things from the other perspective and truly understand him. To not just see Micheal Jackson but the person he was because the movie was designed and written that way. There would have been no inability to see the humanity of michael with a script as such. That is why Edward scissorhands was the perfect opportunity to jump start mikes film career. Edward changed the perception for Johnny even. Before that he was well known and played in a popular series named 21 jump street. He had a glamour pretty boy persona. His first movie was nightmare on elm Street, private resort platoon, slow burn and, cry baby, so he had gained Hollywood success already on screen. More so than Jackson had but scissorhands added depth to deps apeal and carved out a more sophisticated yet zaney career path that was successful.. it could have done the same for michael. Even more so because Edwards story was Michael's story. The one not many knew yet. It would have helped the world understand Micheal. Perhaphs he wouldn't have gone through the torment he did in the 90s if he had that opportunity to share that. Tim Burton didn't want Micheal To have that solace. He didn't want to understand an African American child who grew up pore. He wanted a man with a "white trash" background like him because he couldn't relate to some one who wasn't white who had a pore background even though Tim is Jewish. I tellya if that's not prejudice I don't know what is.

Michael at the time was bigger than Jesus (akin to the John Lennon quote about The Beatles). If you ask Jesus to play a role in a movie as someone other than himself, people will have a hard time believing that this character is anyone other than Jesus himself no matter how good or bad of an actor he might be. Michael is still an unusual case because no one in the modern age has yet to reach his level of fame and notoriety.

Although Mike didn't exactly look black at the time. Yes, we all know he was but he didn't exactly look it, it was more... ambiguous looking, and considering Burton's style is pale skinned, morbid looking characters, I think early 90's Michael would have a great fit, at least regarding looks and mannerisms. At the same time, I can believe the excuse of Michael being too much of a huge super star as a valid reason to discard him for the role. His big stardom was no joke, and people might not have cared about the movie, only that Michael was in it. I wish he would've had at least a song in the soundtrack though, considering how many similarities Mike had with the main character.

This is one of my favorite movies, most of the time, my peculiar likes in 90's movies purely relies in sir tim burton's works. It's weird every movie that mj wants doesn't considered him to be casted, in labyrith i heard they also considered them to play as the goblin king, but turned down the idea bcoz they found bowie as more fit for the role, in willy wonka also, i do believe he's one of the candidates for the role, if that happened i guess the essence of the movie will be phenomenal since he's really famous and his style is suitable to the genre of the film

Disclaimer: I really love and admire them both very much! At first I thought it was a perfect role for Michael I didn't made the connection of Michael's costume in Bad era, thank you for that detail it was mindblowing! Also I didn't know that Michael bought the scissorhands gloves! You did a great research! 👏👏👏 But after all these years of also being a huge fan of Johnny Depp, I've watched so many interviews of him describing himself to Edward that it made me believe that the role of Edward Scissorhands suits Johnny better than Michael. I would love to watch more videos of Johnny Depp's and Michael Jackson's connections in the future!
