Super cool! Makes me feel good about supporting a company that's so focused on quality and locally sourced materials. I have the gravel pack panniers and love them.

One of the coolest companies in Germany in my opinion. Their focus on obtaining materials as local as possible and their repair service are some of the most important and modern approaches to follow. Thanks for this awesome report!

A few weeks ago I saw this video about a place in Africa that literally had a mountain of old clothes sent to them. Some were recycled and some was new stuff that didn't sell. Today, I saw the video where this bicycle bag company repairs stuff they've sold many years ago. It seems to make a lot more sense to make stuff that lasts and can be repaired than to make that African mountain bigger.

My ortieb bags are almost two decades old. I crashed with one bag. The company has repair kits to make the water tight again. Fantastic product that lasts!

I bought a couple of bright yellow Ortlieb Backrollers to replace some copies which had ripped and were not repairable. Wow! Immensely strong. Secure. I have used them for shopping and touring in France and transporting heavy commercial engine and suspension components. Without a doubt I have missed them. No rips, no damaged stitches or hanging brackets. Incredible. I would not consider any other bike carrying panniers.

Well this answers the question, why I didn’t buy Ortlieb panniers in 1979? Most of the folks I’ve toured with have used Ortlieb bags for years, very happily. I also like that they can be repaired if necessary. Thank you for the tour! 🎉❤

That was an informative tour. Good work, both of you. I bought my first Ortlieb bag about 15 years ago, and am interested in what's still coming out of the pipeline.

This looks like such a well thought out company with quality top of the list. They really should think about making bags for motorcycles as well.

Funnily enough, as far as i know, my grandpa was the one to supply Ortlieb with his first welding machine. He had a small business refurbishing industrial sowing machines and steam irons.

Thanks Russ. Of all the bicycle related products I use Ortlieb has the highest recognition rate from the general public. People with life experience just love their technology and instantly recognise a useful, durable product.❤

I work in the manufacturing world it is very interesting to see how processes are alike and different from company to company. Its even better to see the process when it is a product that you love. I enjoy this video immensely. Thanks so much for sharing! Take care.

Ortlieb is one of those rare companies, where you know the small premium you pay goes a long way. For a bag that lasts more than a decade, they are probably the cheapest option there is. Also what is the better half of two decades? One decade? :DD

Both the past and the far future. And yes I can see why they hold their in-house processes very close because of the costly advantages they have pioneered. I want a Ortlieb Vario.

I rock a 26L Vario daily and I personally love the concept. (And yes, I am experiencing fraying on the connector latches). Only thing that annoys me is that inside is not enough different pockets to organize daily stuff. Major problem with the one large flat pocket directly on the laptop compartment is that it is designed only for flat objects. As soon as you put in more rounded stuff it pushes into the laptop compartment. Some stuff I don’t want to just throw in the large general storage volume. What’s ends up happening is that I basically have a huge storage volume where I have to dig through stuff to find it (like a messy handbag). Yet still I love the bag and its capability.

Does the commuter insert fit? That would bring a few more small pockets. BTW would you recommend the Vario in general? It's probably overkill for that purpose but a waterproof backpack might be handy to walk to the supermarket on a rainy day. I have pannier bags but not the thing from Ortlieb to carry them like a backpack.
@CarlLaberfeldСағат бұрын
@@jochenkraus7016 Yeah I think the commuter inserts fit, but I am not willing to pay another 45€ on top of a ≈170€ Rucksack / Pannier (price when new a few years back). I personally think that the Vario is worth it if you actually use both carry functions witihn one day. If you use it just for one function dominantly and only on rare occasion the other, than it is better to keep the products you are already using. And it is really expensive. Because from my view the Vario is neither a perfect bike pannier nor a perfect rucksack. But it is really good at doing both.

My experience with Ortlieb Service when something is broken and I just want to repair that myself: Send an E-Mail with a photo and the specific product name or number to the customer service. You will receive the spare part with a nice message within a few days. Great! ❤❤❤
