This movie felt like a callout to me between ages 14 and 17. I cried, I cringed and I truly felt with Riley. I'm 23 years old, Inside out just hurts so perfectly right, both the first and the second part, and it's a comfort movie to me to remind myself that it's okay to just... Not be okay, sometimes. To struggle.

Inside Out might not be Pixar's BEST film, but it's definitely their most IMPORTANT film. Never has a movie elevated children's emotional intelligence so much. Kids that watch it can talk about their emotions in ways way more advanced than if they hadn't.

I feel bad for people that are so serious and beaten down by life that they get nothing from media, that it makes them feel nothing and fails to make them think about anything to be unable to understand it's worth so much that they have to disparage others to feel like they're smarter just because they can still see something they cannot. It is completely fine for a movie to help shape someone's way of thinking if the message is good, what's bad is relying on media 100% and doing nothing as a parent to help guide them through it then blaming said media when your kids start acting up.

Anxiety was handled perfectly in this film. I had a big feeling she would be the main antagonist since the first teaser. The movie has her be like actual anxiety with taking over all the other emotions and causing Riley to have an intense panic attack and it only started to stop when she let go. Anxiety can get a massive hold on people and the feeling when it lets go is very calming. But the film also shows the good things of anxiety with preparing Riley for the future but not causing extreme panic for anything that could go wrong.

The thing the film was the most subtle about in my opinion is why the feeling of anxiety is important. By the end, it still feels like they just got Anxiety out of the way to make sure she doesn't mess with anything. Even at the start when Anxiety is doing a good job, there's no "This is the feeling of anxiety and why it's good" explanation, but rather it's left for you to interpret that the anxiety you see storming the movie and the subtle nervousness that leads to a good job at the start are the same emotion. I honestly wouldn't have minded if they gave the feeling of anxiety the same treatment they gave the feeling of sadness in the first movie.

Anxiety explained herself why she's important to Riley at the beginning. She "protects her from the things she can't see" and "plans for the future." The movie wasn't sublte in how Anxiety is helpful, but in how it's harmful. We don't get a whole explanation of why Anxiety is bad like we got when Anxiety was explaining why she was good, instead we got to see Riley slowly spiraling down and having an anxiety attack in the middle of her match. At the end of the movie, Anxiety wasn't just moved out of the way; Joy used therapy talk to help Anxiety ground herself. Things like "Are those scenarios happening right now?" and "we have to let go of things we can't control and focus on what we can control" are really good tools to give to anybody, children or adults, who want to cope with anxiety.

People don’t give Pixar enough credit for the last few years. They’ve made some shitty sequels, sure, but the plan was always to use the money from those sequels to make great original movies as well. Luca was great, Turning Red was great, Soul was incredible. I don’t understand why people say Pixar has “fallen off”. Now that they’re only doing sequels and training directors not to put their personal experiences into films, now they’re falling off.

Also I think too much is being read into those comments about the sequels and non-personal stories. I think the idea is not to make them painfully autobiographical, not not personal. The proof will be in the pudding--whether or not the films are good. Pixar is still going to make a lot of original films, probably more than most other studios TBH.

Same here, I cried because when I was young, I was like Riley initially, thinking I should be kind and do all good things. I cried because I felt I was definitely not like that anymore. I couldn't act kind immediately without overthinking. That's why, in the end, when her belief is all messy, I cried again. She changed, I changed, and it's all true. It's part of my growth and myself despite everything is messy now.

I really like it when Pixar tries to appeal to things children often go through when growing up. For instance, Monsters Inc is meant to be a twist on the fear of monsters so many kids have. Inside Out 1 is about growing up, experiencing all these different kinds of changes in ur emotions & how one reacts to it. With Inside Out now being a movie franchise alongside Monsters Inc, I hope Pixar continues to make movies like this that appeal to kids on a more personal level

There's obviously a contemporary audience for Inside Out and Inside Out 2 but I feel unsettled by the notion effectively assuming these movies appeal to children generally. Monsters Inc and Inside Out share similarities but crucial contrasts with Inside Out. Subtractions I believe. Both may I add are Pete Doctor films. Beyond his style, I figured back in the days when I was a kid myself that Pixar Animation Studios strategy is or formally was making animated movies on subjects interesting for children and interesting for adults. Who remember what interested or still interests them. Until Inside Out released and I doubted the goal remained the same, at least from my point of view, in making stories appealing to what interests/appeals to children. Rather than making attractive, high quality educational programming packaging information around what appeals to children superficially. Inside Out is a modern day fairy tale and comparable by design to tasty medicine. I doubt this will become something which lasts decades if not centuries without ever intending to become classic. This formula serves a singular purpose and that purpose only appears timeless now. These PIXAR movies are not centered around the commonalities or convergence between children and adults but lessons deemed necessary to educate the masses of children drawn in by appealing artwork and music. I should mention what I mean is for the first era of PIXAR, adults were the main characters. That's a massive distinction between older and newer PIXAR movies. One which even with sort of adult characters in Inside Out 2 there's less similarities, I noticed, between the emotions and the monsters of Monsters Inc or even toys from Toy Story. Compared to how similar each are to a kid like Riley. Anthropomorphizing emotions seems relevant currently but I wonder how rewatchable Inside Out and Inside Out 2 will stay within this century. I worry continuing to make this kind of animated movie will uniform a particularly creative storytelling medium into a narrow purpose which may become dated sooner than expected.

The dialogue subtlety is a criticism that I definitely agree with, but I’d say that personally, this movie absolutely moved me-though it’s probably just because I’m in a rough time in my life. Spoilers below!! Specifically the scene where Joy tries to drag Anxiety out of the panic-attack tornado while all of the buttons are still spazzing out, and there’s like a hologram of Anxiety there because she’s moving so goddamn fast to try and fix the mess they had gotten themself into, and Joy tries to drag Anxiety away from the console and she just starts… silently crying. That got to me. It was like she was trying her hardest to put everything back in place but she really couldn’t do that through… Yknow. Unbridled fear. And she was getting overwhelmed. That definitely made me tear up. Also, I think Anxiety was a good villain in general-she was genuinely threatening and scary to me at moments (ie. When she catches Joy in the pillow fort), and that was nice. Last thing I’ll note is that the animation for the entirety of the ending sequence was really impressive and notable to me; they did a really good job of framing the hockey game Riley was in in different ways based on who was in control of the console that makes the scene feel so much more stressful and tense (when Anxiety is there you get fast cuts, close shots of the action that feel really claustrophobic, everything is a bit more dark and gloomy and intense, but when Joy takes over it’s a lot brighter and they take their time on showing different motions and such). The contrast is super noticeable because for Riley, it’s all one scene in the hockey game, so you can just Feel the difference in tone once she’s back in the game. It’s so good I’m really into this one. My one main complaint is that I was expecting the stakes to end up higher again in Inside Out 2, though-in Inside Out 1, Riley tries to run away, and that feels genuinely dire and upsetting to watch. But here she just wants to… get onto the hockey team? Make sure she still has friends when her other friends move? It’s still serious and worrisome for her, but I know she’ll be fine, because a lot of people don’t make the hockey team or have friends move away and they’re usually fine after a while. In the first movie it’s like… oh my god, she could actually be in serious danger, even though I know nothing will happen because it’s a kid’s movie (not that kid’s movies can’t be dark but I know she’s not going to successfully run away because that would mean Joy failed Yknow). I was just holding my breath the entire movie waiting for Riley to overwork herself and get hurt, or hurt someone while playing, or something (regardless I was seriously convinced that if they went as far as the first movie someone would end up in the hospital or in a cast). And then it never happened.

I honestly prefer the lower stakes cause it feels more grounded and relatable in that regard. Not to say kids haven't run away from home in real life but I don't think it's as universal as freaking out over something that is incredibly important to you, which is much more common

Inside Out 2 might not be as good as the first one, but if the first one was a 9 out of 10, the second one is an 8.8 out of 10, so still pretty great. It feels unique enough compared to the first film to warrant it existing, and it was pretty good anyhow. But this might be one of the last good Pixar films we'll see in a while, a Pixar executive literally said it himself that they'll be focusing less on movies with personal experience (like Soul and Inside Out) but instead sequels to pre-existing franchises that relate to a larger number of audiences.

Hi psychology student here🙋‍♀️ I think this movie was absolutely necessary. It explains many psychological theories about emotions, learning, memories and forming opinions etc. (basically general psychology concepts applicable to the large mass) in such a fun and simple way. I understand your frustration on it feeling “too much on the nose” sometimes, but you have to remember that the target audience also includes kids PLUS these are literal emotions, which function it is to communicate and interact to form the best possible reaction to the current environment/ situation at hand. It’s also obviously following the stages of development (it’s doing a great job in my humble opinion :) ) and isn’t just about being a teen but rather transforming your simple worldview from childhood to a more complex (therefore the more complex emotions and also the differing self perception) it’s not only about your emotions not dictating your identity but much rather about how every of our actions define us, whether we want it or not (I.e. we saw Riley’s self perception being “I am a good human”, only choosing to remember the good things she has done, while trying to ignore every bad and uncomfortable thing she has done, which later are being shown to also be important and also part of our identity). Maybe I was focusing too much on the way theories were implemented and the characters behaviour, but this movie for me didn’t feel rushed contrary to the other ones. It’s literally over a span of three days. All in all from a psychological standpoint I think it did a wonderful job explaining core concepts of the human experience and biology to a large audience, who maybe doesn’t have the access and the time to educate themselves in at times very complex and abstract theories. Therefore I think it’s a wonderful and necessary sequel. :)

I found it really funny and annoyingly relatable as someone with an anxiety disorder. Like it didn’t have a ‘and now you cry’ moment but I don’t think it was going for that really. I felt the chaos of the anxiety storm and how it entirely gripped her. That sort of thing doesn’t make me cry but it’s something so validating to see play out. I similarly contended with a move away from friends that caused me to preemptively alienate myself to find new ones. It fucking sucked. Maybe if film wasn’t so breakneck all the time I feel it could have sat with me better, idk. I think because of the nature of the emotions, I’m not emotionally connect to them as people. They are talking metaphors. So joy comforting anxiety wasn’t the same thing as Riley’s parents talking to her. I agree with this review. It had a good story to communicate the ideas, I just think if it had slowed down on some character bits and trusted its audience a little more it would be another pixar home run. But I get that pixar is freaked at the moment due to everything, they were trying to keep people watching. That said Soul, Turning Red and Luca are still stand out Pixar films for me, each brought on the classic pixar misty eye and I find it strange people think it’s in a slump. Its in a financial slump because these great personal films got buried on streaming and their theatrical releases were… Buzz. And Elementals which did pick up hype, as a different type of pixar film.

The entire movie was more about letting go of fun things. And sacrificing it for personal growth. And think about Riley's future. And having to make sacrifices. Like you can let Joy take over and play video games. But your inner anxiety will remind you that you have to do your homework. Joy only made her seem like an irresponsible immature child. And then anxiety becomes dominant, and will always calculate what is the best for us. To try keep things in balance.

I enjoyed the 2nd film a lot more because how relatable she is in the movie with how strongly she is trying to fit in and some things she was doing I even found myself doing to at some points in my life like when she was getting overly conscious about the way she walked😂. I agree; all art is inherently unnecessary. Humanity would have kept going with or without Van Gogh or Mozart or Bergman. "Necessary" is always a bad argument for whether a movie should be made or not. It was no more necessary for [movie you like] to be created than it was for [movie you dislike]. Is a good movie more valuable than a bad one? Sure, but at the time of their conception, they were both unnecessary. Shift the focus from "should this movie have been made?" to "this movie exists; does it provide social/emotional value?"

ever since i saw Wish, i had to think to myself "maybe i'm just not the audience." (i'm 22) I felt the same way too about Inside Out 2, but I think it was more of me being like uuuuuughhh this is kinda the same movie, uuuughhh i have to sit through this scene. but watching the movie didn't feel like an entire chore. when it's cute, it's cute! i did like that they showed more of riley and how she was interacts with people. this didn't make me insolubly cry like the first movie as a 14 year old who had a hard time being open about my feelings in front of other. but just sadness telling joy that riley wants her made me oh AHHDHHhhahahH.😭 I FEEL like the movie was wrapped up well and okay. def don't hate it but im thinking omg this company is gonna be producing sequels nonstop.

I always thought that the setup of the emotions didn't necessarily work in the movie's favor and was out of balance. In the first movie, we have Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust, which means 1 "positive" vs. 4 "negative" emotions. And now we have Envy, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Anxiety, so the ratio is now 1:8. And while these emotions are certainly all true to the teenage experience, I can't help but think that an emotion like Excitement, Curiosity, Love, Pride, Hope, or Trust etc. arguably would have been a good addition to the cast as well. But I haven't seen the second movie yet, so I'm curious to see how it goes :)

Inside Out 3 Theory: I think this will cover Riley and her emotions saving another person. Riley’s dark secret is that she accidentally harmed one of her classmates in the past which was overlooked by the other emotions as they did not see the long-term consequences of the action due to Anxiety not being present. As a result, Riley will meet the classmate again but this time the classmate’s emotional turmoil is what allowed that classmate’s Anxiety to win unlike Riley’s which gradually leads to self-destruction. The emotions saved Riley from the inside, now they will have to save someone from the outside.

this movie was very accurate to someone who is a new teenager. i’m 18 now, but when i was 13, everything that riley did in this movie, i did when i was 13 as well. having unnecessary beef with your good friends, doing everything u can to hang with the older kids, and pretty much having constant anxiety attacks. i’ve gotta say, my life was way worse when i was ages 13-15. from 16- through now it’s gotten a lot easier. i can appreciate how accurate this movie was.

Inside Out 2 feels so much smaller. The "Sarcasm" and "Brainstorm" are great world building, but they don't work too well as roadblocks because they aren't really a result of Riley's conflicting emotions. They're just a result of Riley growing up/literally thinking! (In the first movie, the roadblocks were Riley as a person breaking apart). Good movie- that I wish didn’t try to copy the same formula of the first movie and would have expressed its strong themes in a better way. Great humor, themes, and world building, but bad plot. And I 100% agree that it was too fast paced

Emotions and psychology are two of my biggest passions. This movie exponentially surpassed my expectations. The subtlety and nuance in the jokes and interactions were brilliant. I didn't find the pacing to be too fast at all (but then I'm a New Yorker with an anxiety disorder so I don't have the most patience. ;P) It is ironic that you expect perfection from a movie about how our beliefs that we are not good enough literally cause us to have breakdowns. What IS perfection, anyway? For me, it is an unattainable ideal. Regardless of your standards for perfection are, perfection is subjective.
