If he is the manifestation of the secret and he is locked in the vault, this would mean she hides it from herself. It coming out of the vault would mean it enters her semi subconscious and probably make her worry about it. Riley would probably feel relived telling her parents about it, but then it wouldn’t be a secret, if anything just a memory and then, would “big secret” die? It’s purpose is lost and unlike fictional characters it has no grounding to fall back on so it probably would defragmentize, or be reborn as shame/guilt as she was supposed to be in the early draft of the movie

@@josephgover5072 it’s a common thing in Freudian psychology, the ego (you) find something it really doesn’t like about itself so it hides it from the conscious (your active thoughts) and most subconscious (instinctive thoughts) by locking it away in your shadow (the worst part of yourself) that is so bad that your mind doesn’t let you know about it. Then there’s persona (mask) which is the filter of your mind to interact and protect you from the world around you, that you act differently to different people, which I would guess is the console as it does different things depending on which emotion press the button. Super ego which would be her first and second sense of self as they are created by select emotions and memories, the belief that she is better than she is (I’m a good person) created from only good memories and holding to a unrealistic standard (I’m not good enough) created from harsh memories. Then finally there’s the self conscious, a vague and fleeting concept about accountability, understanding and choice (has no direct quote but could be “I am flawed, but I strive to be better” created from all memories. Then there’s more but not so clear things like Anima and Animus which is you seeing yourself as the other gender, tho well just say it follows a really archaic understanding of gender that really doesn’t fit in with todays interpretation, which is understandable as it was written 100 years ago and needs a heavy pinch of salt

This opens a whole new potential because it shows that Riley has repressed memories from guilt, shame, hatred or worse. Yes Burning a rug is weak but do not forget, that's one of it. Maybe, in the future, Riley finally goes to therapy and it opens all the repressed memories and emotions hidden in Riley for years. Like Loathing, Hatred, Remorse, Shock, Grief, Depression.

The creators have confirmed that the console losing color and being completely inoperable during the climax of Inside Out 1 was the universe's equivilent of depression settling in to Riley and it was only by allowing Sadness access to the console that was able to get her out of it.

Honestly, the mistakes we make as a kid are the ones we often remember and live with the most and have the largest impact in our minds I remember when i was only 4, i scratched the cupboard after mum clearly told me to not play around with the cupboard, and that haunted me for years man parents were mad for only like, a brief moment of just, reminding me to NOT do that but that shit stuck and i dont know why

To anyone who thinks that this is a new emotion called depression: Depression isn't an emotion. Its the absence of emotion. Its not to be confused with sadness or any other emotion. Its not a normal thing that should be ignored. Sadness on the other hand is a normal and important part of our lives. Without sadness, we cannot understand the value of joy. In the first movie, there was a scene where the entire console just went gray and didn't respond to any emotions. Thats exactly what depression feels like. Your brain just stops responding to emotions when something traumatic happens because it doesn't want to be overwhelmed by any emotion. Its definitely a problem that should be addressed by talking to your loved ones or by facing the underlying issue.

I think that is a bit extreme, and while a completely villainous emotion wouldn't be a bad idea they kind of already did that with Anxiety and the Puberty Emotions hijacking HQ. No, I like to think that the third film's story will involve a major flaw in how 2 ended. All of the new beliefs given to help Riley form a new Sense of Self in 2's climax were made from exceptionally negative experiences. Which means Riley will be an exceptionally negative person, both to herself and others with merely the emotions in her head keeping her in check. This, I think, will come back to bite them hard while Riley deals with the rest of High School and her position on the Firebirds. EDIT: I also just realized that with the extended cast, Joy is now even MORE outnumbered in regards to the generally-considered negative emotions vs her as the sole positive one (maybe Nostalgia can be another positive one?). I really think/hope that this is addressed in the third film too.

I unfortunately walked out of the theater and missed this part, which is weird bc I usually do stay for post credits, so I didn’t know they had revealed what Riley’s “deepest darkest secret” was. So when they originally left you thinking what it could’ve been, I thought it would be something that would come back in the next movie and act as a keen part of the plot. In my head, it being that she was secretly gay or bi and the next film would be her in her late teenage years coming to terms with her sexuality. Still could be the case but nope…it was just she played with matches and accidentally burned a rug lol. I wouldn’t put it past Disney to do that though
