This was a really sweet and touching scene. It drives home the point that sometimes, when you're sad and you've just suffered a major heartbreak, that sometimes, what you really need is not someone to cheer you up, but someone who will simply just listen to you and be sympathetic. Joy apparently didn't realize how much these losses meant to Bingbong, and tried to "snap him out of" his sadness, without success. It was Sadness who understood what Bingbong was feeling, and took the time to listen and understand what he was going through!
@JAG_Music2 жыл бұрын
I always hated as a child when people would try to cheer me up when I was sad. People don't understand that you have to let people go through emotions. My grandmother has Alzheimer's and she cries every day. Everyone always tries to cheer her up and it never works. Sometimes they even blame her for crying while they're there to visit her. I'm the only one who listens to her. I try to tell everyone to leave her alone but they're so closed-minded.
@matthewweatherford65662 жыл бұрын
Not only that, they also taught that men can let out their emotions just as much as women and kids. That's what I want for my future cartoon TV show. I feel like in kids cartoons, when a man cries, it's mostly for humor (I like SpongeBob and all but you gotta wonder if the way he cries was meant to make fun of the men don't cry stereotype). There are exceptions but I don't feel like there's enough. Other than crying candy, they did an excellent job with making Bing Bong's crying realistic. I also love that he cries on a girl's shoulder and the girl hugs him back. That's also what I want for my future show. I created this 13 or 14 year old mouse (originally a squirrel) boy and I'm thinking of making him an orphan and will break into tears every now and then. I'm considering doing the voice myself and if I do, I'll cry for real while recording my lines. If Paige O'Hara can do that, so can I. You gotta wonder if Richard Kind cried for real while recording his lines. I love that this scene contributes to breaking the stereotype against men crying.

It’s funny because at first glance Joy seems like the kindest most empathetic person ever, because she’s full of joy and happiness. Yet when the situation calls for empathy, she’s so focused on being happy and joyful that she forgets how other people feel and focuses on her ideals. It almost like she doesn’t know what sadness is, at least not until the end of the movie. Which explains why she treated sadness the way she did. Joy fails to realize that Sadness is a part of her, and not just her, everyone. So it’s okay to be sad, because after sadness comes happiness. This scene was kind of foreshadowing the ending of the show, and was a bit of a wake up call for Joy. Edit: Also notice how her character design isn’t just yellow which represents happiness, she also has shades of blue in her eyes and hair. That’s also a sign that sadness is a part of her.

This is one of Sadness's most noble moments in the whole movie! Hats off to Sadness. Thankfully, by the end of the film, Joy finally realizes how exactly Sadness managed to do that. When I first saw this movie, I thought Sadness did make Bing Bong feel worse, but what she really did was the complete opposite. This movie hits me right in the feels.
@iqranedzereie60264 ай бұрын
Sadness actually has the one thing that Joy doesn’t have; empathy. Joy, being the happy emotion, tends to distract Bing Bong from his grief, just like what she did to Riley. She doesn’t know what it’s like to be sympathetic to others, unlike Sadness.
@Mr.Rogers143 Жыл бұрын
This scene helped me realize something about myself. Ever since I was a teenager, if I was upset about something, I hated being cheered up by someone who was trying distract me from what I was going through. Unless of course it was relevant and they were helping me see passed a delusion I had. Someone asking how I felt about what had happened and how it impacted me was so much better. Even someone coming over to just sit with me in silence would have been better than someone trying to cheer me up.

The moment, which shows us, Joy is not always the most important and doesn't always help. Undoubtedly, Joy is wonderful, but she doesn't understand some moments. That's normal, none of us can't understand everything. Bing Bong was sad, he needs be sad, cry out. In this case Joy is powerless, he (Bing Bong) needs Sadness, because Sadness know, what is it to be sad...
@iqranedzereie60264 ай бұрын
It’s empathy; which is the exact thing that Sadness has. She listened to everything that Bing Bong wants to let out. Just like when she saved Riley from running away and finally letting out to her parents with tears and grief.

This scene alone shows what Sadness has something that Joy doesn’t have; empathy. When someone went through a heartbreak or a depressive state, it’s okay to be sad instead of distracting from it. By being sad, it lets out all of the suppressed emotions and you will feel a sense of relief as evident here when Bing Bing cried out, hugging Sadness, and finally feeling better.

But other than the candy, they did a good job with having Bing Bong cry authentically. What especially warms my heart is that a girl lets him cry on her shoulder. I find it frustrating that for so many pieces of animation, (especially aimed at kids), men crying is often played for laughs as if they're making fun of men who cry. I'm not saying they should stop doing that altogether but I wanna teach audiences that men can cry just as much as women and kids.

I've come to appreciate this movie the more I've seen it. It is the perfect example of "toxic positivity"--I run a support group for people with a chronic condition and it causes dysfunction of the nerves and brain. People are really suffering, but sometimes you get "that person" who thinks that all you need to rainbows, sunshine and a pep talk, and it'll cure the disease. No. People need to be told, "I'm sorry this is happening to you," and while we do talk about treatment options (because they do exist), we don't pretend that positive thinking will cure anything. It can help cope and that's important, but it can also mutate into gaslighting if you're not careful. Sadness really shows it's okay to not be okay sometimes and how to let people feel loss without guilt.

This scene exactly accurate what happens when something worries me or when I am sad. When I am sad or worried, my mom turns on her joy and tries to cheer me up! It's incorrect! Because this is the same as ignoring feelings. Whats even worse, is that she is comparing my worries and pain with something else which is more serious and massive! That's not helping, not to me and not her. This is the same to compare, motorcycle with a ship! ☹️
