Hey Chris - This is a tricky drill to be sure. Before launching directly into the "inside out turn", have a crack at this one first kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZTGYpyMYt6Gjbs as it is a critical stepping stone. Good luck with it all, and you know what they say.....if you're not falling, you're not trying hard enough ;) Cheers, Guy.

Really good demo and explanation! We were just talking about the "White Pass" turn last night while on the chairlift, this sure has those elements! I've experience the "old" inside ski coming off the snow at the end of a hard carve and dropping down on to the new edge "just so" at the start of the new turn with my upper body continuing to move down the hill as my skis come around beneath me, entirely on their own, like on auto pilot. This explanation really figures that out! Thanks!! This one goes into my drill tool box in a way I can demo it.

Sorry if this is too late, but I do like this drill...but I have a question. If you consider the weight on the inside ski, from the drill it looks like at the start of the turn you are at 100%, (you are on one leg, so that has to be correct) and then both legs touch the snow, but at what point does the weight transfer to the outside ski? Going through the turn what should the pressure be on each ski...thanks!
@AlltracksAcademy8 жыл бұрын
Hi Cliff, Thanks for your interest in this video. That is correct, at the start of the turn this drill has you transferring all of your weight onto your inside ski. At the fall line - as you place your outside ski back down - weight will begin to "load" back on to it. This loading can be attributed to a couple of factors: 1- Angular momentum (the force which feels to be pulling you to the outside of the turn. 2 - The lengthening of your outside led (essentially pushing your ski into the snow, which in turn pushes back on your body. And 3 - Gravity (which works with you at the beginning of the turn, but against you at the end of the turn. In terms of a pressure distribution ratio between your inside and outside leg, this is something that is continuously changing. At some point in your turn transition it will be 50/50, at some point at your turns end it will/can be up to 100/0, and during every other part of the turn it will "blend" from one to the other. I hope that helps....Thanks, Guy

@@shooter7a Yeah, my 53 years of teaching was a total waste of time. And no, that worthless exercise had nothing to do with anything they did in racing. Do you Ever ski on the uphill edge of your uphill ski during a parallel turn? The reason Shiffrin hard all her problems in the Olympics was because she wasn't getting off her downhill ski fast enough which put her on her inside ski so much it lifted her outside ski off the snow. Yeah, I don't know anything about ski technique. I only have the best ski teaching method on this planet. That's all.

@@JB91710 if you are actually an instructor (which is doubtful based on your negative hostile attitude) then you must be the most childish, negative and closed minded instructor in history. Seriously...you know more than Olympic medalists? You are the best? Your way is the best? This is an advanced drill. Your comment about "uphill edge of uphill ski" shows you have little understanding of what this drill does. Are you aware that is one of the key drills that helped Phil and Steve become elite skiers. It is the White Pas Drill...as in White Pass, WA. Home ski hill of Phil and Steve Mahre....

@@shooter7a Body Miller should be a great teacher, right? He has no clue how to teach skiing and he can't even teach racing. Doing and teaching are completely and totally different talents. Yes, my teaching method is the best. Try reading it and TRY to tell me where and how I am wrong? Repeating yourself doesn't make what you say anymore true. Now, tell me HOW this "Trick" helped the Mahre's race better, not just that it did. I was skiing on the outside edge of my inside ski before your parents were born. It is nothing more than a freestyle trick. It teaches you absolutely nothing that you can use to make turns. If you can rotate the steering wheel of your car from the passenger seat, will that make you a better driver? Just because someone says something works, doesn't mean it does. You might want to stop being a Follower and start THINKING.

* Should also be noted that another key to this drill is thinking about being perpendicular to the slope angle as you enter the turn, or making sure you're stacked/balanced over the foot you're standing on..... hard to do this drill if you're not in an effective position.

@JB917105 жыл бұрын
Notice he did answer you? As your skis pass under you, lean your upper body, from your kneecaps up, down the hill as you get off your downhill ski. Your uphill ski will instantly roll over onto your arch and the ski will turn. You just balance from one arch to the other and lean down the hill.

Drills are the secret to skiing better. Skiing is too complex to learn through "instruction". An instructor/coach can say "ski like this" a thousand times...and it really wont matter. You have to break down the sub-movements and program your body to do them automatically. Then you put together the pieces you have programed..... The White Pass turn helps activate your new inside leg and achieve strong edge angles sooner. Phil and Steve Mahre did this drill when they were kids. Garlands RR tracks Swiss Drill Javelins White Pass / Norweigan Drill /Inside Out One Ski Turns Get Over It All these drills should be done from time to time to keep your skiing technique on point.

In the past, when I didn't get my weight properly on my downhill ski during a big carved turn like this, I accidentally ended up on the outside edge of the uphill ski and got stuck there -- this is not a fun feeling. What is the secret then to not getting stuck on this outside edge.

+Daniel Desjardins The trick here is to lower you outside shoulder and drag your outside pole on the snow....this will keep you balanced on outside ski through turn completion...Thanks!

what is this supposed to do? from a tecnical point of view? i mean sking on your inside ski is fun and one legged carving is well fun as a ski teacher, but seems to me this drill will make people learn the wrong movements for carving
@hervedepow48265 жыл бұрын
It helps with learning to move your body down the fall line. This exercise stopped me from stepping up to my inside ski while attempting to initiate early transition. In doing so I was moving my body away from the fall line. Once you get the feel for this you will have the sensation of moving your feet towards the outside of the turn which means your body is moving inside. Another helpful hint for me is to take weight off the new inside ski rather than putting weight on the new outside ski. As you begin to move from neutral begin to unweight the downhill ski and this will help keep your body or centre of mass to the inside.
@JB917105 жыл бұрын
@@hervedepow4826 If you do what he does with his upper body to do this drill but you Just get off your downhill foot, you will accomplish your goal without risking blowing your knee to pieces. 0:48 All he had to do here is get off his left foot. That's it! No drill! No danger!
@shooter7a2 жыл бұрын
This is an advanced drill. Do not attempt unless you are already a solid skier. The purpose of this drill is to develop very fine foot-ankle control and balance during the transition from one turn to another. Edging, pressure management, and dynamic balance. In the old days, Phil and Steve Mahre used this drill so they had superior control and confidence as they finished one turn, and exploded across the hill to the other turn, and could assume large edge angles before they loaded the ski. This drill also develops a strong "plan B" reflex for when you lose your DH edge. FIS level skiers lose their DH edge all the time. It happens at the limit. If you have done this drill a lot, when you lose the DH edge, your body has a plan B...the inside ski. With modern carving technique, an important concept is that the inside ski initiates and leads the new turn. Finishing a carve, 85%+ of the load is on the DH ski. As you transition, that ski needs to "stay in charge". You need to let the DH ski unload, drive your hips forward to keep pressure on the tongue of your DH boot as the ski goes flat, and then roll onto the new edge on the same ski. So you are going from stable position, to flat ski, to new edge. This is a very unstable transition that requires a lot of overall body inclination balance. Fine control on the new edge is key to this balance. That is what this drill isolate. If you know how to carve on the DH ski with high loads, there is ZERO chance of this drill putting you on your uphill ski. It is literally not possible because your uphill leg is in a much weaker position, bio-mechanically. it simply can not take much load. The harder you turn, the more load HAS to shift to your DH ski (till you lose the edge..and need Plan B for a fraction of a second). If you find this drill is scary, and hurts your knees...or you "get stuck" going straight...that 100% means you are not really advanced enough, and need to work on pressure management. You are back at the end of the turn! Do Swiss Drill and Rollerblade turns to correct your issues and build tongue pressure control.

If this drill hurts your knees, that simply means you are not advanced enough to perform the drill. You are in the back seat finishing your turns, and have not developed tongue pressure control and fore/aft balance skills. Every FIS level skier has this drill mastered. It is basically a less demanding step vs one ski drill.... and a bit harder than the "rollerblade one ski drill" "Roller blade" one ski.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4XaoGN_n5h6idU True one ski drill.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJe3hZ6kmraKiqc Either that, or you know more about skiing than Debbie Armstrong and Mikeala Shiffirn.
