Inside Saudi Arabia: How Far Can Any Reform Really Go? | Business Documentary from 2019
Episode 4: Travelling to Reality
After the murder of Khashoggi, the question is what will happen with the reforms. Is the support for Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman crumbling? We travel to the rarely covered conservative South, on the border with Yemen, where the population’s resistance to change is the fiercest.
About "Inside Saudi Arabia": Saudi Arabia is well known across the world for its wealth, strict faith and oppression, but while Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman has decreed that it wants to reform, the world is startled by the murder of journalist Khashoggi and other human rights violations. Inside Saudi Africa follows the developments from the inside, through the eyes of the inhabitants themselves.

You're glad to see "people in general are fed up with western narratives of how to live" but I didn't see that in any of the episodes. In fact, Sinan Can did an excellent job of promoting Saudi Arabia in an unbiased manner with just the honest facts but if you're fed up with the west your criticism is a non sequitur. By inference you are suggesting how the west should live and your so called understanding of the west is a contradicting in terms. In fact, Sinan mentioned the murder of Khashoggi but he didn't assign blame and he advocated for a moderate Saudi Arabia without finding fault. I suggest you do the same. I'm a westerner but I have no desire to impose my lifestyle or religion or politics on Saudi Arabia. We all live on the same planet. We all breathe the same air and we all love our children. I suggest we learn to get along. We need to find a better way

I'm not a fan of the west, but they are right on this one. If your country doesn't have freedom of religion and women's rights, you can't say you are happy, basically you just don't know what it's like to have human rights. Saudi's aggression is too much and it should reduce. They should allow freedom of religion and women's rights just like israel

Non equality is not a culture, but barbarism. They enjoy ruling women and treating them as objects for reproduction. I can't respect oppression, just because someone calls it a culture. First and most important thing is EQUAL EDUCATION, than equal opportunities, equal rights, equal obligations, and after that, we can talk about who wants to live that way. Under such circumstances, if someone still wants to live that way, I'm fine with it, but I'm not obligated to respect that way of living.

Most countries that condemn us are living in poverty, civil war where their children can’t even have a proper education and they have the audacity to speak about us. The other countries that claim democracy and freedom are countries famous for their war crimes and they actually produce more gang members than doctors and teachers yet they have the audacity to speak about us. It’s just hilarious and somewhat it feels refreshing to watch such things then to just walk out my house in my city, where people are just living peacefully and having a blast 🤣

If your mother, father, brother, sister or loved one were murdered the death penalty wouldn't be a problem. If your child was raped or molested the death penalty wouldn't be a problem. Prisons in the West are overwhelmed because the laws are corrupt and because people are not afraid of going to jail for the crimes they commit. Instead of trying to act like you are the rightous ones maybe you can learn something from the Saudis. We have more than enough problems in the West so I suggest we solve our own problems here before we start worrying about people across the globe that have a different religion, culture, and way of life. Not everyone is going to think like you, act like you, and live like you. Worry about the thousands that are in poverty and in prison in the West stop wasting your time and energy on a people that have been around for thousands of years. They are older and wiser and know how to sustain themselves without your help. Lead by example not by force and people will follow.

Even though the whole series is informative and raises important, non-negotiable issues, the anchor and the pretext of the documentary is laden with pre-conceived biases, and believes that Western perspective is the ONLY perspective! Western politics is amongst the most hypocritical of all to say the least. Their rules are different for their Caucasian citizens within the country and their foreign policy is absolutely ridiculous to say the least! Their human rights matter whereas the rights of humans in other countries don't. USA is yet to abolish death penalty. Why dont you go ask their Senate about that? Their is something called incremental change, and the anchor could have darn well done a better job to understand that rather than superimpose and be biased about what the 'West' thinks about Saudi Arabia or the rest of the world in general. Countries around the world have pre-existing social and political systems. Agreed, a lot of the aspects are flawed about such systems. So is the 'modern', Western democratic system. If the change is not organic and superimposed, you end up with failed, violent, lawless states.

Meanwhile, unfortunately there is a same malicious view over Edward Snowden, Julian Assange, Che Guevara, or Dieudonne with a philosopher in France and many more around the world. By preventing double standards in our reports, we can conquer more audiences hearts if that’s anyone objective.

In SA it's given for crimes like murder and rape and also for “crimes” like homosexuality, atheism, saying anything against Islam (blasphemy), adultery, Witchcraft. And it's done publically and sometimes they even put the body for public display for days. Get the difference? If you think that there is no difference between capital punishment in US and Saudi Arabia then you should get some help.

It has nothing to do with not liking criticicm. The whole premise of this documentary is to look for perceived issues with Saudi Arabia and it's religious governance. Unfortunately, we in the West see others who do not have a democratic government as being by default oppressed, backwards and needing emancipation lol. We tend to view the West as being the ideal societies and systems of governance. I have no problem with democratic ideals and the system but if other countries want to follow religious based or monarchical systems I have no issue with it as long as it does not lead to human rights abuses and most importantly the population is happy & catered for. Most Middle Eastern countries have wonderfully low crime rates, rapes, murders, non-existent homelessness, strongly developing education sectors (thanks to leading western universities) and some of the best Doctors/ Healthcare in the world. Yes there are issues, I'd be disingenuous if I said otherwise. But I think we in the West stop needing to judge societies especially if they do not conform to our views of society. And to back up that misjudgement we look to pick faults while ignoring the degradation in society, law & order as a result of our democratic systems.

I've met different people in Saudi Arabia those who enjoy the way they live and those who hate it but honestly the one thing they all can't deny is that they really live a dream a beautiful one I mean these Saudi men provide everything everything to their families everything so for the people who say they hate the ways of Saudi especially young girls they just don't know that grass ain't greener the other side it's even just messed up the other side

Every man in the world provides for his family. Many are so poor and earn a few pennies .but they still provide for their families.we are not talking here about men providing for their families. Which is their duties.their obligation.we are talking about the saoudi regime. We are talking about the oppression of imams who talk the truth. We are talking about democracy that doesn't exist in saoudi Arabia. We are talking about the jailed and oppressed imams.we are talking about the murdered journalists and writers like khashoukji . We are talking about the wealth that is only shared by by the kings and princes and princesses of that country. We are Talking about the the tortured foreign house maids who's passports are taken from them and they don't even get their wages. We are talking about how Ben Salman is allowing vices in the birth place of the best man walked on this earth. Our beloved prophet Mohammed .pbuh.we are talking about rich saoudis who go to western countries spending thousands of dollars on prostitutes. And bars and alcohol. There are so many bad things in saoudi areabia. More than the good .the only best and feet thing about saoudi arabia.is that it is the birth of our beloved prophet pbuh. I have seen a video where the saoudis had given as a gift خلتم النبي to Soumya khashab. A singer who doesn't deserve it. A singer who sung in saoudi areabia wearing tight dress showing all her body. This is what we are talking about .

We thank God for our women. Islam has honored her with chastity and modesty. She is not a commodity to be played with by whomever he wants. When a man proposes to her, she has the freedom to choose. It is not in our nature to leave women waiting in queues in the markets and government departments. And we value them. This is what Islam commanded us, and we respect the neighbor as if he were more than a friend. We are not sympathetic to others, we do not gloat, and we do not differentiate between our gender and our colors. Thank God for the blessing of security and safety.

Even if the narration is viewed as biased, it serves well to be informed of the "other side" of the truth. I've lived and worked in KSA for almost 20 years (1983 through to the close of 2000). This documentary is a reminder of so many things that have opened my mind to the realities on the ground in Saudi Arabia. The road to Abha in the Asir region brought in a rush of pleasant memories. I've travelled through its steep ravines countless times.

@@user-bc9fh3jv3b I agree in most of your points although I don't think it's extreme, the prophet pbuh family members and wives covered their faces making it a Sunnah and it's normal in some countries. In saying that I understand why they might think it if they didn't know that it understand why we veil since it's less common here in the UK. There's also a difference of opinion between whether face covering is mandatory or not or if it's just a Sunnah. I follow the opinion that it's mandatory although I respect everyone's clothing choices as honestly it's none of my business and it's not up to me to judge anyone not to mention telling people what to wear is extremely rude.

I read the comments and I find it so strange that so many people found the reporter biased and condescending. Why do people take the reality so personal? The reporter asked questions, valid questions, people answered. We could say that the people are also biased.... I also find it appalling that a lot of comments were in the direction of 'leave Saudi Arabia alone'... Sorry, but that is ridiculous!!! There are documentaries about hundreds of places, hundreds of countries!!! All countries are different, all countries have specific traditions and customs and a LOT of countries do not have the best of politics or laws. Some worse than others... It is just interesting. I have seen MANY documentaries on Saudi Arabia, with the good and the bad, with the beautiful sights and the modern, with the riches and the extravagant, but I have seen a lot as well with the 'modern' slavery, the poverty, the hidden agendas... That is the reality!!! Nothing in this world is perfect.

Peter Santenello is a poster on here and has a really great channel. He travels all over and has really great discussions with all kinds of people in all kinds of places, especially places that are off the beaten path or often those that are considered dangerous. About a year ago he did a great piece on Saudi Arabia and "who knew"? Many changes in the country. MBS sees the demographic of the majority of his citizens and he knows that they can reach any place in the world with the communication of today. it is impossible to close off a country anymore. He has a choice, he can move the country forward or it can shrivel up and die. Half the population will be dead in 20 years (probably a bit of an exaggeration) and he had to look beyond them. He can certainly do that and still keep the cultural and religious traditions, but young people need the freedom to thrive and in turn the country will thrive. Countries and the people in them are multifaceted, and there is always a push and pull, a good and a bad, You can't put the people or the country in one big box. JMHO
