The concerning thing is that ÖBB have hugely hiked the cost of sleepers to eye watering levels. I did a sleeper from Milan to Wien in October and paid a €90 supplement on my Interrail. The ÖBB can't do magic. They have ordered 33 new full Nightjet trainsets. I don't know in how far they will replace existing ones. There is a massive shortage of sleeper train sets in Europe as the sector has been disinested for decades. Demand is much higher than supply even now as the ÖBB has expanded its Nightjet network. Regular flights are not much more affordable than a couchette when booking sufficiently in advance. This is double true if you own a Klimaticket which quite some Austrians do, which cuts single ticket prices down by around 50 EUR.

The sleeper cars from the 2000s are really good and offer more flexibility. Compartments can be reconfigured for 1, 2 or 3 people and even be merged with adjacent compartments. And they are more reliable then the new trains. ÖBB has some truly old couchette cars and and they really should have replaced those years ago, but every cent went into these new sets, which came late and problem-ridden, because ÖBB wanted a Raljet-like train instead of new and impoved single cars.

1000 EUR is ridiculous but have a look at the actual prices. That is probably the max price if you are using a double sleeper cabin alone. You pay of course for two in that case. If you don't go for that luxury option (and opt as a single traveller who just hates the idea of being with a foreigner in the same room for the pods) prices even in the worst case, are much more reasonable. If you book a sleeper train a few days in advance you can be lucky if you get a place. The highest prices for single comfort plus, the most expensive option I could find did not exceed 475 EUR, that is very expensive. But if you fly first class, how much do you pay for that again? The plus is just luxury. The Single comfort is already at 355 EUR and that is a ticket at short notice (and like i said, those single sleepers, you pay effectively for two as you also consume the space for two). The pods can be found at around 100-130 EUR, even when booking at short notice, as long as they are not booked out.
