@@TheChieftainsHatch I wouldn't be surprised if that light switch ends up on vehicles sent to the first off-world colony. 🤣 I've seen a "modernized" version for sale with light-up button controls, pretty sure it still has the same plug on the back and is a direct swap for the lever type. Not sure if it's actually yet/planned to be in service on anything or is just an upgrade for collectors, though.

The reason that many of the switches look identical to that on vehicles from the 1940's onward, is simply because they are robust and they simplify training. As you said, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. It also reduces cost in production and makes maintenance easier logistically when they share common parts across a wide range of vehicles new and old. Some of these switches you could probably pop out of a museum piece vehicle and they would install just fine in this one.

Man that's the CLEANEST AND MOST COMPLETE MGS I've ever seen in 23 years with the project. You can adjust back and forward on the driver seat by reaching between your legs. Theres a small lever on the middle of the front of the seat cushion.

IV bag thing was maybe done on for like 1 rotation (and only select platoons did so I can almost guarantee) in Iraq/Afghan b4 AC units were installed on all strykers. By the way, when it was installed, it was just a tube that blew AC onto the driver's neck, which was just enough to keep you from passing out, (remember if its 120 Fahrenheit outside its hotter inside, cuz the diesel CAT engine is literally right next to you) still the need to drink lots of water of course. We used things like Gatorade bottles to piss in. The longest I spent in one, at one time, was I think 4 days straight. Only time I got out was once to take a shit that happened to be a false alarm..

Buddy of mine (Armor) had a company of Strykers downrange. He said he just stopped even trying to roll the MGS for missions, because the odds it would be useful in the environment were nearly nil, the ROE before using the main gun made it even less useful, and the odds of it actually work well enough to do more than use up tires and fuel were astronomically tiny. So he kept it parked the rest of the tour and used the crew to plus up other vehicles as needed.

9:40 best thing about the MGS vs Abrams, i never had to nullify drift. Went months on end with daily operations and some being hours long, never mess with drift nullification after the first or second time. And likely the second was the next day. It also held a boresight zero for months. Only time i messed with it was when we first got a vehicle, or during gunnary where i would purposly mess it up before hand so we could get the training. Even when it was still good, we would mess it up. My MGS was the only one operational enough for TableVIII qual, and 6 crews qualified on it in the same day, with my crew proofing the range as we qualified. Being a combat qualified crew and knowing the limits of the vehicle, we only really needed to qualify my driver. And on thus type of vehicle that was so easy we dropped 2 engagements and still scored in the high 700s. I and my TC have scored 900+ so anything above 700 was good for us. We knew it was basically BS since we predicted that most SBCTs wouldnt be sent to Afghanistan again.

The red button underneath the cover on the TC's handle is the designate button for the CITV. Also the small screen in the TC's station right next to the radio channel select is for the back up thermal camera.

11:54 that black push button is a load, re-ram, and stow/swap ammo button. To load on an empty tube or after firing, one press gets you a fresh round of the same type. To re-ram(common with canister) you double tap. To stow it was either a press and hold or a press till it started doing its thing. To change ammo types you had to change the type designation switch and only needed to press the load switch to get the process started. You could also warm up your autoloader, making it faster than if it were cold. This basically ran the system through a cycle till you could get a 6sec relaod time. The 10sec on WT is with a cold system and after watching impact. No tank crew ever waits for impact to decide if they are goong to be ready to reengage unless they are Russian. And then they take more seconds since thei think their APFSDS takes time to bore through armor it will never pen.

17:48 so you can do a barrel change, should it be required. The act of doing so, is dangerous if you are using the coax that much. But you can rotate the turret and the commaner can rock the 50 while you perform this action under relatively safer conditions than being fully exposed. It takes knowledge and a fare bit of finesse, but it can be done. The hot barrel can be dropped on the deck and written off if its lost, or tossed into the side rack if its not full of anything that will cause other problems.

I swear that’s the same brake pedal from my 1960 GMC C15. I’m not sure if all CTIS is the same in all vehicles. But if I remember correctly. The caution symbol/emergency was to keep a damaged tire inflated. Stealing air from the other tires. Maybe it’s because I was in aviation, but I always had a seat belt cutter on me. Always on my left shoulder strap.

We didn't have those SA cameras in 2008. It makes sense to have as the primary sight was blocked if the driver had his hatch cracked open. If you didnt feel like slipping into a canal, the driver hatch tended to stay cracked open

That driver's position looks very nice. Big hatch, room for legs, and when the seat reclines you have an entire bedroom back there. They considered putting that turret onto the M60 back in the day when it was on one of the light tanks that was being trialed for the AGS. I bet the first M60 commander to sit in the TC position had some words on the matter. Trading in a mansion for a tiny apartment.

There’s a spring loaded stay device that eliminates most of that wobble so you don’t get knocked off the lock positions. 28:16 after driving a Stryker for a while, you know your edges without the wing mirrors. 28:48 seatbelt cutters are in fact part of every Stryker variant’s BII. Also you mentioned the 113’s horn. The Stryker’s electric horn is just as puny. The bell you see on the side is the air horn. The Stryker has both. And everyone hates you during motorpool monday if you don’t stuff a rag in the bell before you test your air horn.

The CTIS "Emergency" is super low PSI, about 15 psi in trucks. the computer will override and restart inflating tires is you drive over IIRC 20 MPH. When the 88M class used to go to the Pismo dunes I would set it to that, then disconnect the system to leave it at the low level.

I believe the emergency setting is if you get a hole in your tire, it just continuously throws air at it to try and keep it inflated so you can escape and replace it

That setting caused the system to continuously run through the cycle of "inflate 20 seconds, check pressures. Do not go into fault mode. Repeat. "Runflat" and "Emergency" Were separate settings. There were times when I was attempting to get a derelict truck mobile that I pulled the in (supply) hose put of the box and just connected it directly to out (to the tires) and ran it.

As someone who has driven a Stryker, the driver position was the best. As for visibility, a 6 foot person standing in front of the vehicle would not be seen unless they were 10 feet from the front of the hull.

that last access panel on the engine wall is for the fluid for the Transfer Case The second set of controls for the DVE is actually for the rearview DVE, its in the right tail light, it usually doesnt work the driver's seatbelt system is actually very fast to disconnect, the belts click in and then there is a tab you pull on the blue circle to disconnect them and they suck back into position I am a Stryker mechanic, I could tell you what just about all the switches do I can also tell you how unreliable these things are as a whole, the Stryker platform doesn't have a dedicated operator MOS, operator error destroys these poor, overengineered machines

Nothing but truth. I showed up to my unit, was given a license for all variants of the Stryker without driver training and was told it just worked like any other truck. I don't recall ever breaking anything on it and I only really had problems with the air system. In Alaska, more than once, I would go out to the mopo on Monday to find that my truck was leaning to one side and the ramp had dropped on its own...

19K but I got stuck on these for a little bit as a young private. I remember getting yelled at by the TC to crawl back from the drivers seat and fuck with the MCS box when the wires for the AUX going to a phone would come loose but we had jammed all our rucks in that access door due to the rain so I was struggling to get back there. Also Maybe I’m misremembering things but I could have sworn the radio mount was in the hull and you had to have the turret at a certain position to access it. This was a major point of contention at gunnery because the mount was jacked up and one of the radios kept coming loose and we’d lose the jump net.

The IV story seems a bit odd. The driver had the best fan in the truck. In 2008, we also got the refit that included the cooling vest. I hated that thing as my body would be too cold but everything else was still sweating. I just had a rag hanging on the left and my camelback on a hook behind the chair. That thermal viewer was a life saver or a death trap depending on the situation. There are times when the road, surrounding land, and air are the same temperature and you are driving blind and having to depend on you TCs instructions

Everyone is different but I can't recall too many days when I thought it was completely unbearable. It could have been related to growing up in Arizona or it could be that constantly drinking water does wonders. Our Caiman MRAPs were far worse in the heat.

MGS originates clear back to 1983 with the 9th Infantry Div (Motorized) as an Urgent Needs Statement when they were experimenting with the Chenowth 4LWC-based Fast Attack Vehicles, then of course didnt materialize until the OOTWA Operations Other Than WAr peacekeeper craze of the 1990s.

I'm going to miss the open-to-the-public day on Dec 14th by one week. (I live about 800 miles away but will be visiting nearby) I'm still really annoyed that the Army built this facility where it's basically inaccessible to the general public. The Air Force did it *right* with the NMUSAF being located on the edge of Wright-Pat AFB and open to the public year-round.

This is the same era that gave us "Universal" Camouflage, Black Berets for everyone, and plastic rucksack frames. PEO Soldier visited us in country to survey us about how the MOLLE rucksacks held up. We simply dumped the entire platoon's worth of broken frames at their feet. They said we used them wrong. I'm frankly amazed they canned the XM8 and Dragon Skin body armor after they failed tests. I thought for sure we were going to be stuck with those.

The sad/infuriating part is they easily could've, IIRC the main "Real Issue" they claimed for its retirement was the suspension couldn't handle the stresses of the guns recoil very well resulting in frequent breakdowns, parts breakages, and low readiness levels. However they chose an M68 Cannon modified to be "Lightweight, Low Recoil" with the M68A1E4 also known as the M68A2 modified for the MGS turret and it's autoloader (While having NUMEROUS differences and upgrades, the M68 105mm is basically just an Americanized License built Royal Ordnance L7 105mm Gun). Initially the MGS's even cane with muzzle brakes, bit these were removed for some reason (All I can think is the sand kicked up on firing was an issue maybe?). You'd think if the Big issue was excessive recoil, one of the most counter-productive things you could do is remove the thing helping reduce recoil. 🙄 They've had experimental, lightweight low recoil versions of the 105 since the early 1980's; namely the M35 which was featured on the Experimental proposal submissions for the AGS program such as, the AGS... and the better known XM8. In fact it recently finally entered actually service after 40 years as the Main gun on the M10 Bookers/MPF's. With its notable properties being its lighter weight and lower recoil than the M68 Cannon. The MGS's issues seem easily solvable if only the Army had cared enough to actually do so which VERY strongly resembles the militarys inept mismanagement of the M60 GPMG to me which was improperly designed from the start and as if that wasn't bad enough, had numerous manufacturing defects to boot. Most of which were already known and easily fixable as early as the 1960's, yet the military almost never did and just kept buying new replacement M60's instead. It wasn't until a private company that'd been a subcontractor on the M60E4 on their own initiative decided "FK it, we'll do it ourselves" in the mid 2000's that the M60 truly reached its potential; and all they did was simply ask "We fixed a lot with the E4, but not everything; what's left?" And created the M60E6, managing to get adopted by the Royal Danish Army and notably beating what many consider its "Superior" replacement, the M240/FN MAG. And feels like when the military adopted the then High End Berreta 92 aka the M9 as the standard sidearm, then pulled an Army and separately contracted cheap 3rd party magazines instead of Standard Berreta mags and wondered why they were so unreliable after being worn out with 20yrs of use wearing them out THEN being sent to the sand box...

(former USAF here) Why is the vertical reticule on the sight canted slightly? Did they not mount the gun concentric with the chassis? Is it to account for settle time on recoil during rapid fire?

Primarily sight vs bore offset. Line of sight is not entirely parallel with line of fire, the two only actually intersect at one specific range.

There are dome lights. Selectable between white light and (normally) green.

The warhead is kindof a semi liquid. If stored horizontally, it flows to one side and unbalances the round.

Hmm, a wooden caliber 50. It saves a ton of metal and costs and machining, but probably takes longer to manufacture though, cutting and polishing wood can be tricky, and needs a good wood worker to make I bet. But on the other hand if it fires wooden bullets, you have a sure fire Vampire killer here.

No. The S tank shell ejection does not break NBC protection, neither does the ejection system of the CV9040.

with the S tank the whole auto ejector is outside the crew compartment and if I recall the T62 does but the way it was designed was with such an over positive pressure that it could chuck a shell without too much risk

I wonder if they'll ever bring back the MGS. Genuinely seems like a great concept but the original tracked platform makes sense fighting those hordes of T-72s and T-80s. But I guess with drones, having that stuck in hull down vehicle isn't all too great now.
