I love that the first priority of an armored vehicle crewman meeting a new vehicle for the first time is, "Now where the hell am I gonna sleep?"

the "trick" keeping the pins of the tracks in, is that their outer head is stamped to keep the pins from sliding inwards. the inner head has a small dome keeping the pin from sliding outwards.

wow! this vehicle is awesome! comfy for crew, nice gun, HAS armour, (unlike similar tanks) low profile, ect. i only find one disadvantage, the position of the driver. if you put him between the engine and the turret. with two 360* rotating periscopes, and direct vision to the sides, it would make the turret a bit smaller. plus he would be well protected. and the turret can rotate fully without causing problems for the driver.

I like the ammo storage in that tank, at the back away from incoming fire. I can't imagine the death toll from poorly placed ammo stowage during WW2 and post war designs.

I'm still confused about how in the world the driver station worked without being hit by the other guys in the turret. Was the entire turret limited in traverse? It seems like an amazing little tank aside from the bizarre driver station. Speaking of light tanks, it would be awesome to see a review of the PT-76 amphibious light tank. From my understanding of its history, it was one of the more popular tanks in the Soviet military with a very good reputation. A few countries like Indonesia I believe, are still using them but updated with 90mm cockerill cannons and new fire control systems. I'm not sure if the Russian naval infantry forces are still using it or not. *edit* Yup...apparently they're still using the PT-76 but fitted with a 57mm auto-cannon. Nice to see old classic tanks updated and put to good use.

As I understand it, the driver moves along with the rest of the turret, but his seat and controls also rotate on their own axis to keep him facing forward. Had to be more than a little disorienting to use. And he does mention that while the turret could go 360°, the driver's station could only move 70° either direction, so that was the turret's limit.

Thanks very much for reviewing this...I knew nothing of it before. And I think it is pretty neat. I am not saying it's a perfect design. But it is unusual...and I have long had a thing for rear turret tanks (no idea why).

None. Mainly because only one was left unconverted, and that was lost on the Russian Front. The remainder were converted to StuGs, with one Ferdinand and one Elefant still remaining. Neither in fantastic condition.

Hm, that rotating drivers seat is similar to what the MBT-70 had, right?
@CrazyChemistPL
@CrazyChemistPL 11 жыл бұрын
The thing that sparks my interest most is that rotating driver seat, and level of complication of the mechanical linkages required to make it work. I feel it might have been one of the most important reasons to why vehicles of such configuration (ELC AMX) never really caught up. Honestly I believe that WoT could have implement these vehicles in more realistic manner - giving them full 360 degree travers when stationary. Ofc you'd have to swivel the turret to the front to be able to drive again.

Very interesting video. Some pretty clever features built into that vehicle. Just one request though; get rid of the music playing all the way through the video, I find it very distracting.Its like whatching a tv show were the opening titles continue into the first minutes of the actual program. Makes me fel like the video proper hasn't started and I'm just watching an extended title sequence.

In the video he said that the drivers seat does not fully traverse, as it only had 72 degrees of traverse to each side, so in fact the turret could not be fully traversable or the driver would not be able to drive - this is my understanding.

I sometimes wish that the camera would find a way to do some more steady pan shots of the interior. it is sometimes hard to tell just where everything is in relation with everything else, you just get some disconnected shots, and you have to look for clues from other shots to see if and how they overlap. Its not always self-explanatory. That and some of the cameramen keep the camera steady on you as you talk, even as you are pointing at or discussing something off screen. Often a shot of (presumably) that object is edited in afterwards, but if it is a lever or knob you were pulling, we can't see it. I can tell different cameramen are used on different shots, and some are much better than others, but those pan shots would be nice. or would have been nice, I should say.

It was any gun above a 37mm or 1.46 inch (i believe) was designated as a howitzer and thus had to last many thousands of rounds this lead to a low muzzle velocity and poor penetration :)
