Had a Mazda Protege precursor to the Mazda3 and never had any rust. My brothers had a turbo 626 same never any rust. Both of our cars were very good cars. I think it may depend on what part of the country you live in, if you are in the snow belt, live by the ocean etc... most cars in those areas have rust issues. Salt is a very corrosive element.

I love that Mazda still makes incremental improvements to its vehicle. They don’t wait until a massive mid-cycle refresh to introduce desired features. While that may suck for the person that brought the last model it just shows to me that they care and they are listening. Once they get that Apple CarPlay/Android Auto they’ll be gold.

I love manuals, but his explaination of why they didn't offer it here makes a lot of sense. (because the turbo 2.5 kicks in early and there's not much more power beyond 4-5k RPM). It's very diesel-like in providing the peak torque at RPM's where you'll actually use it every day (what a concept!). I'd still rather have a manual (just like I love manual diesels), but I get it. As automatics go, Mazda has one of the very best out there and god bless them for staying away from those horrid CVT's.

More gears are actually something a "car guy" doesn't want. It just means more things to break. Toyota had a 4speed auto in the corolla until 2014 and it worked great. The new CVT is a downgrade in most "car guys" eyes. More doesn't always mean better.

Great in-depth look at this car. I bought a 2017 Mazda3 this year and I really think people are missing out on a couple truly great cars if they overlook the 3 and 6 because they don't have engines with HP ratings over 250. They may not, but the rest of the car is a cut above the others in the segment. The seats IMO are great, and they have executed very well at giving the car a lot of features while keeping button counts to an admirable minimum on the dash. Their infotainment control system is also very easy to get around. And that volume knob on the transmission console is an immediate game changer for interior control schemes. It's so smart that anyone that tries it will wonder why more makes do't do it. This revised 6 looks to continue Mazda's new drive to keep refining what works rather than reinventing every 4-8 years.

SurelyYewJest I totally agree. My Mazda 6 only feels a little bit slower than my BMW 5 series did. Acceleration wise the Mazda just goes. Love the look of this 2018 model. The only complaint I have about Mazda so far is the service centre customer service sucks compared to BMW.
@SurelyYewJest
@SurelyYewJest 7 жыл бұрын
Ya, that's unfortunate. I will say the Mazda dealers in my area don't come off as super-pushy, even if they're part of a larger local chain. But the American dealership model is set to change away from haggling to straight pricing. They'll have to to compete with the coming self-driving revolution. But the Mazda dealer closest to me was super cool about me just checking stuff out and not hovering over me. They employ some actual enthusiasts for the brand, so that's important.
@mattevans1643
@mattevans1643 7 жыл бұрын
I don't know what car you have to get into to decide the seats are shitty. It's 2018, unless you are buying a low end car they will have great seats. As for infotainment, couldn't care less, if it does what it needs to do I don't care about the rest of it. Just play radio, and Bluetooth, I don't need the rest. If the car does not come with the option to push In a clutch pedal, and change the gears myself, I am not interested nor am I missing out. If I have a manual that is made correctly I have power throughout, as long as I stay in the power band. My car has less than 150hp, and it is more fun to drive than any of the trash cans on wheels. They aren't missing out, they are buying the 250+hp machines, because those come in manual transmissions. Also because they are better cars. My mom had a Mazda3, while it is a good car, it was extremely boring to drive, and made no sense why it was in 4th gear at 25 mph. That is not the appropriate gear to accelerate at 25 mph, and is not fuel efficient. If I'm having fun and going 60 in third, I'm still getting 35+mpg, people aren't missing out, they're making better decisions.

Regarding the "At Mazda, we don't focus on horsepower numbers, we focus on Gs, jerkiness, acceleration from various speeds, etc." reasoning, I half think it's just convenient Mazda spin, but on the other hand he may have a point. It's pretty obvious some automakers allow the marketing department to decide how much horsepower their vehicles produce. Will let the instrumented testing speak for itself, I hope it's impressive because I want to like it.

smith jones Probably the best description I’ve heard of Mazda is “slow car fast” it’s feels fantastic to drive even though you’re not melting rubber. It’s not just a Mazda spin, it’s their actual philosophy; it means you can enjoy that feeling of driving even at low speeds.
@sszhao11
@sszhao11 7 жыл бұрын
That is because the hp number advertised is peak HP, basically hp at full throttle at max rpm. In real world driving, the experience comes from partial throttle at lower rpms. So peak HP number war means nothing. You can have a 1 litter rev to 20k rpm get 400hp, but with low torque and poor driving experience

Ethan S That engine is 3 years late to the party. Weak engines is what really drove many car buyers away from the Mazda 6. When I was in the market for a mid-sized sedan in 2013, I considered the 6, but only having a single, 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated engine option was a deal breaker. Ford and Chevy both offered better powertrain options and they still do.

Well, Mazda may not "care" about horsepower numbers, but this 2.5L has more hp than the old 6 cylinder had. I had a 6 cylinder myself, and it wasn't the most refined engine out there. It was just a standard Ford duratec. This thing will blow it away, I don't think there is much doubt about it.

The "old 6 cylinder" is a 3.7L that had 272 HP and 268 lb-ft of torque (I know, I have a 2010 V6). The CX-9 with premium fuel only is rated 250 HP, and 227 HP on regular gas (which the "old" V6 can run without any reduction in power). The 3.7L is also one of the smoothest V6s I've ever experienced, miles ahead of the V6s than Nissan builds IMO. The advantage the 2.5L will have is the torque (310 lb-ft). If Mazda can manage to put the power down without torque steer, it will indeed finally be a worthy successor to the V6s offered in the first 2 generations of the 6.

If you watch any of the CX-9 reviews, that turbo gives off so much power at the low end and I think the best way to manage that would be an AT transmission, keep in mind that the review was for a much heavier car but the torque surge surprises them. On the lighter 6, that much power might be a problem.

Wow! That was an excellent overview and explanation. This is one of the few representatives who doesn't sound like he is reading from a brochure. Well done. And also, well done to Mazda for finally giving us a turbocharged engine in the Mazda 6. Now it's a much more convincing competitor in this segment. Up until now, the Mazda 6 hasn't really been tickling any of my bits at all, even though it was the prettiest car in this segment. Its appallingly limited engine choices are what have been putting me off from buying one. In fact, as a consequence of that, I ended up settling for a Ford Mondeo ST when I upgraded my last car in 2013, even though I really liked the looks of the Mazda 6. This new Sky-Active Turbo has also come just in time to fend off the upcoming Insignia GSi which has become the prettiest car in this segment now, in my opinion. I have already shortlisted the GSi as my next replacement choice when I replace my current Mondeo in 2018. But with this Mazda 6 Turbo coming out at around the same time as the Insignia GSi, which one should I buy now, between the Mazda 6 and the Insignia GSi? Hmmm, decisions decisions decisions........

Mazda has shown that they would keep the manual alive even if the sales of it will suffer. The mazda 3 in my region has the manual on all trims, the outgoing Mazda 6 also had manual on all trims. Even the CX-3 and CX-5 had manual options (but only on the lowest trim). I'm willing to bet the excuse is probably technical, betting that the manual was never designed for the torque of the 2.5T

Here in Europe we've had twin turbo 2.5 diesel engines for years. I think the problem has been doing the same with petrol.

I'm thinking its more about the nature of the engine, being more like a diesel in its power delivery so not high reving and as a city car not a performance car the market is very low for a manual these days.

Interesting they eschewed the DCT, yet try to claim they were still focused on the “connected” driving experience. I am curious how it will feel with the aggressive lockup in any gear above 2nd. Might work. Subaru’s old 5EAT was horrible about unlocking the TC and feeling like a slip and slush... but it was still better than their godforsaken CVTs. Anyway, as a driver, I found the VW DSG and Porsche PDK to make for excellent feel and driver engagement. The Macan S with the PDK doesn’t feel like your normal, sluggish, disconnected crossover. Put it into “Sport” mode so it revs a little more, and the positive bam-bam-bam of the gearbox is quite satisfying. And I’m a die-hard manual aficionado. Yes, dual-clutch systems require more maintenance. But if you don’t want a third pedal and still wish to retain the connected, driver’s-car sensation, there is no substitute for that mechanical link. As an aside, I think this is currently the most handsome sedan to come from Japan currently, by a long ways. Honda and Toyota have been hitting the hallucinogens HARD with their nightmarish designs. The exterior of this Mazda is clean and stylish. The interior reminds me of some of the best years of German cars. Again, enough but not too much, clean and well laid out, not coldly spartan like a Tesla but not overwrought like many others. Good job, Mazda.

I think it's mainly due to cost, of developing a low enough maintenance DCT suitable for daily driving. The DSG is a very good unit, And lightning fast, but very costly both to develop and maintain. I think there's even a few articles of VW Group moving away from the DSG in favor of the ZF auto. Then you read about the less than stellar implementations, theres a fair share of issues. The most common thing I head about were all the Tucson DCTs. They had some iffy logic controlling the clutch in low speed so the cars that would were being driven bumper to bumper had premature clutch wear. as for the Mazda auto, I own one. Lockup does happen fairly quickly under regular driving conditions, and the unit is very good at re-lockup after a shift. The unit actually uses a clutch for lockup (the clutch is in the TC). The only time I sense hesitation in lockup is under heavy load (say foot 50% going up a hill from a stop), it tends to use the torque converter for longer. And the downshifting is just absolutely amazing. It does rev-matching so well and so quickly there are times where it does feel like a DCT, The only "con" (to me it doesn't matter but to some it might), is unlocking the TC is a very violent action. You can feel the car slowing down and right around 25kph you feel this jolt (much like an old hondamatic 5-speeds shift), and you suddenly experience less engine breaking. I also love manual transmissions as well, but The mazda Auto was truly a great experience

I was perplexed by this as well. PDK is the gold standard for transmissions in which all other “autos” are measured. When he mentioned that other manufacturers are walking away from DSG, I was like “what?” Overall if I can’t have a manual I would want a DSG. Maybe they haven’t proven to be reliable though in long term use? I lease my cars so maybe it wouldn’t be a big deal anyways.

skifree: "The DSG is a very good unit... but very costly both to *develop* and maintain." I think you hit the nail on the head... seems like Mazada is playing it safe since it would be a shame if they developed an excellent, new engine and then coupled it with a shit DCT (sort of like all the Ford PowerShifts)

I had Mazda 6 2006 Diesel Turbo in UK. But only lasted 2.5 years for me. I had to sell it way early. The turbo start leaking oil, also the power steering oil pipe corroded & had to replace it. Got rid of it & got Lexus 250, still working fine with no trouble. Now going to replace with EV. No Gas car again for me & no Mazda definitely.

You know what else can decrease lag than having valves in the exhaust? Something like the Mitsubishi's cyclone and Toyota's TVIS intake systems. Less stuff to get destroyed by hot exhaust gasses. How much boost and what drivetrain does it have?

I think this is a great move toward the Mazda consumers begging for a speed6. I want that engine in my 2016 Mazda 6. I do think they are making a huge mistake if I heard that correctly in that there will be no manual turbo option. I think that most people that wanted the turbo were looking for something like the speed6.
