As big a fan of the Enterprise D as I am, the refit version for the first 6 films (yes i know technically the later films are the -A) will always be my favorite version of the Enterprise. It looked so real as a kid.

@@johnbockelie3899 Both the original Enterprise and the Enterprise D had a wonderful warm feeling. Cozy in a way. The refit, voyager, Sovereign, etc all have a hard, metallic, coldness I can't quite get behind. I like them all, but I could never comfortable if I were on the latter "cold" models mentioned. Maybe Voyager... as it was almost between them.
@johnbockelie3899
@johnbockelie3899 3 жыл бұрын
@@nonconsensualopinion The Sovereign class was built during the Borg situation. This class ship basically was built for fighting. The refit was built when Star Fleet was re designing older ships like Enterprise to fit in with the fleet. Voyager was built during the time where star fleet was becoming aware that enemies still exist , and had to be dealt with. Enterprise D was built when there was a belief there was peace in the Federation, and all was well. The original NCC-1701 was built in a time of space exploration to expand Federation boundaries. So, bridge designs vary with the era.P.S. both Enterprise E, and Voyager have no " Neck" because Starfleet designers consider that area to be a target zone .

@@johnbockelie3899 Although I do see the appeal of the wide open spaces presented on TOS and more luxurious, carpeted interiors on TNG, the interiors of the refit Enterprise in the original films were a result of Harold Michelson's new design and the aesthetic worked even better for the nautical theme imposed by director Nicholas Meyer for the sequel. His vision of Starfleet being a military operation is helped by making the Enterprise seem more like a submarine with narrow, metallic corridors and subdued lighting. Star Trek II is largely a submarine movie in space. I know that Gene Roddenberry claimed that he didn't want Star Trek to be "the military", and was disappointed that later film directors chose to go more in that direction, but Roddenberry was also very contradictory about this. He envisioned a future where interpersonal conflict among co-workers didn't exist, and conflict between different species would be solved without violence. He had an unrealistic, utopian style society in mind that made it extremely difficult for writers to come up with interesting stories. Stories often revolve around conflict. Contradictorily, Roddenberry was also the one who came up with the rank structure (which mirrors that of the US Navy), and no doubt subconsciously drew upon his own experiences as an officer in the US Army Air Corps. He also said he modeled Captain Kirk off of fictional Navy officer Horatio Hornblower. So, he's the one who made Starfleet the Navy in space way before Nicholas Meyer came along and doubled down on it. Roddenberry could have made Starfleet more like a scientific organization such as NASA, run by civilians with titles like Flight Commander, Operations Director, Mission Specialist, Flight Surgeon, Astrobiologist, etc. But he chose to use ranks like "Captain", "Admiral", "Lieutenant Commander", and "Ensign" and have violations of Starfleet regulations punishable by "court martial". That's called the military! Civilian organizations do not "court martial" people - they fire them, sue them, or have them arrested by the police and tried in a civilian court of law. Gene Roddenberry subconsciously made Star Trek "the military in space" whether he wanted to admit it or not, and the look of the films captures that idea the best in my opinion.

You nailed it. Nicholas Meyer had the right idea in my opinion to make it more claustrophobic with little bits of detail to make it more realistic and you got it perfect. Your attention to detail was excellent, even the fire extinguishers. To me this has always been the best looking Enterprise, (interior and exterior). Great Job!!!

To me, the perfect example of what a corridor on a starfleet vessel should look like 23rd Century-wise. I owned the Mr.Scott's guide to the Enterprise so I know that those corridors have a function to them. (cannon or not) The TNG-era stayed somewhat faithful to this concept but with size in mind. I don't particularly care for the JJ-universe nonsense or the STD versions. Basic creative thought doesn't seem to be a prerequisite with those designs.

Could you use the existing plans/blueprints and aftermarket model insert photos and create the botanical garden? Every time I look at the ship and see those six big blue windows on the lower part of the engineering section I always wondered what the view would be inside that room looking out at the stars. It's one thing to see a top-down drawing or a miniature with trees and pathways winding around water ready to be inserted in a Polar Lights 1:40 Refit Enterprise model, but only you can make the experience of walking through that amazing space a reality.

This is still my favorite era for starship interiors, @@DVersiga1984. It's so cool to see these brought to life. I've done my fair share of 3D work, and have even tried a few of these movie-era sets - so I know how much work goes into getting these right (none of mine ever made it to finished models, it's a mountain of work). And yes those angled corridors do make it seem smaller. I didn't learn until recently that these were built from the Phase II sets.
