Performance-enhancing drugs were once a closely guarded secret in the bodybuilding world, but a new generation of fitness influencers is openly sharing their use on social media and marketing dangerous new substances known as research chemicals to their teenage followers.
These new drugs have been linked to organ damage, heart failure and, in some cases, death. Their sale for human use is illegal but social media companies and the Federal Drug Administration are seemingly unable or unwilling to stop their spread.
In this episode of Fault Lines, we take you inside the deadly market for research chemicals and introduce you to their suppliers, marketers, and victims.

Bostin grew up in a family and community where this kind of risk-taking with PEDs was normalized. His emergence in the bodybuilding scene coincided perfectly with the rise of social media, and he was one of the early "test cases" for a new breed of social media "athlete-salesperson". The platform elevates those who need to feed their narcissistic desires, and it creates a sense of belonging for followers who aspire to traits promoted by these influencers - traits such as masculinity, power, aesthetics, wealth, etc. (and the cars and houses the wealth can buy). America is especially primed for this, since these traits are thoroughly yoked with the "American Dream". If only we transitioned to a culture where those doing good in the world were more valued and celebrated.

Wrote about this topic for my masters dissertation back in 2016 when faaaaar less people were open about their use and I struggled with my research. I was practically the only female on bodybuilding forums trying to study and find more men to interview(my focal point was men since far more men are on PEDs than women) as it was pretty hard to do this in gyms. I wanted to investigate the impact the fitness industry is having on the male population in relation to the consumption of PEDs. Really makes me happy to see how much more information is now out there and continuing to come to light compared to 8-10 years ago, and the fact a channel on this scale along with others are now openly investigating and making documentaries and content about this topic. It's really needed and people need better education on PEDs before injecting chemical and popping pills with the number of bodybuilders passing away at such a young age.

@QM42069
@QM42069 Ай бұрын
@@gregb4395 I mean unfortunately I think it's a reflection of how far divorced modern bodybuilding and "wellness" is from its roots. It's terrible but to the average person this is what bodybuilding is, and even to most young guys getting into bodybuilding now their goals aren't Steve Reeves, John Grimek, or even Arnold honestly. It's Sam Sulek, Ronnie, Dorian Yates, all of these gigantic individuals whose bodies are squarely outside what is possible naturally. It sucks but this very much is what the "fitness" scene has become, it's a whole industry. Like honestly I think one of the only people I can think of who is a bodybuilder but in a sense that prioritizes health is the Bioneer. Alex Leonidas is also a great example of somebody who recognizes that cardio, athletics, calisthenics, powerlifting, and isolation lifts all contribute to a healthy and strong physique, but these guys are both relegated to the internet pretty much and aren't even considered "real" bodybuilders by a lot of people exactly because they're so wide ranged in their workout philosophies.
