Fort Knox is so heavily guarded that it’s impossible to break into the gold depository. No one has even tried to steal the gold stored in the depository's impenetrable vault. The facility is surrounded by three fences and numerous security features. The grounds surrounding the fortress are protected by machine gun towers, land mines, motions detectors, and searchlights. Even making it to the front door without proper credentials is impossible. Fort Knox houses $291 billion worth of gold, and the facility has even housed priceless artifacts like the Magna Carta and Declaration of Independence. The secure facility is made of granite, concrete, and steel. No president has even been inside the Fort Knox vault since Franklin Delano Roosevelt. No single person knows the entire combination to the gold vault. The door weighs 22 tons and is impervious to machine gun fire, flamethrowers, and explosives. Each piece of the combination must be entered by a separate official. The fortress is surveilled at all times by the United States Mint Police, and all the guards who work at the fortress are highly-skilled and heavily armed. Every hallway inside Fort Knox is covered in motion detectors, video cameras, and hidden microphones. Sneaking around inside is absolutely out of the question. The gold that is deposited in the vault is transported in highly secure trucks and counted and authenticated before being put inside. It cost approximately $560,000 to build Fort Knox in 1936. My father worked at Fort Knox. When I was 4 years old I got to go inside. Only because of my age was I allowed inside because my sister was 10 at the time and she was not permitted to. I'm 47 now so I barely remember it, however I recall seeing the vault and gold bars lined up from floor to the ceiling. The year would have been 1979 and my only memories were entering past the guard station and seeing inside the vault.

@@jeanniemorris5257 this was back in the 70s. I recently asked my dad and he confirmed that I did get to go inside. Im guessing they didn't believe a 4 year old child was a threat. However my sister at the time was 10 and she was not allowed in. I barely remember remember anything. My dad has a lead bar stamped with the fort knox. It looks like one of the gold bar. It weights about 20 lbs. I remember my dad tried saying it was real and for a long time I thought it was real. He didn't tell me it was lead until a few years ago. Kind of a mean trick😃

Would the gold ever be accessible ever again. How long would it take for society to develop or redevelop the technology needed to break into the fort and access the gold. Land mines are pressure sensitive. Depending on which landmines they have(I doubt they have Anti personnel mines, they would need A LOT of those). They would rather have Anti vehicle mines which need a pressure of 200kg(440lbs) to detonate. Just my guess tho

There was a housing area behind the gold vault in the seventies and eighties. It appears to be gone now. I hope no one tried to dig their way to the vault from the housing area. That would have been the all time dumbest crap ever. The grass could be artificial. Someone mentioned if there are mines around it how does the grass get cut. Has anyone ever see an irrigation system in operation. The grass outside the perimeter maybe real but not likely on the inside.

A friend of mine, his ex wife and her mother decided to stop by the Depository on their way back home. Well they just drove up to the front gates and were asked what they wanted. They said they wanted to see the gold. They were then met with several guards with guns to thier faces. Needless to say, they were "guests" for the next 4 hours as they were interrogated and then released. My friend who served in the army said they were lucky they were allowed to leave. They were told next time, they would face federal trespassing charges if they ever showed up there again.

There's no way they'd get away with it. The gold has GPS trackers and ID numbers which would mean it has to be immediately melted and then moved again before you can sell it. There'd have to be either a large scale mutiny from the inside (unlikely) or an army of terrorists to take over the base and even then theres no way you'd drill through that vault door.

The numbers used here are from long ago, so this must have been produced many years ago. 147 million ounces of gold is currently worth 267.2 billion dollars, not 6.2 billion, as is stated here. If we have 267 billion in our checking account and we owe 28 trillion in national debt seems it would be hard for the US to get another loan. But that is only $86,000 in debt for every man, woman, and child to cough up to get us out of debt. Lets order some more billion dollar military jets!
